Gaussian Processes (GPs) are powerful non-parametric Bayesian models for function estimation, but suffer from high complexity in terms of both computation and storage. To address such issues, approximation methods have flourished in the literature, including model approximations and approximate inference. However, these methods often sacrifice accuracy for scalability. In this work, we present the design and evaluation of a distributed method for exact GP inference, that achieves true model parallelism using simple, high-level distributed computing frameworks. Our experiments show that exact inference at scale is not only feasible, but it also brings substantial benefits in terms of low error rates and accurate quantification of uncertainty.

It has been argued that computational thinking should precede computer programming in the course of a career in computing. this argument is the basis for the slogan "logic first, syntax later" and the development of many cryptic syntax removed programming languages such as Scratch!, Blockly and Visual Logic. the goal is to focus on the structuring of the semantic relationships among the logical building blocks to yield solutions to computational problems. In this paper, we introduce a new programming platform, called the CodeMapper, in which learners are able to build computational logic in independent modules and aggregate them to create complex modules. CodeMapper is an abstract development environment in which rapid visual prototyping of systems is possible by combining already developed independent modules in logical steps.

Operating (1) systems or kernels assist in running conventional applications. Bare machine computing (BMC) applications run on bare machines without using an operating system or a kernel. BMC applications are thus independent of any execution platform promoting longevity and reducing obsolescence. We investigate the binary transformation of conventional applications enabling them to run on bare machines. three sample applications are used to demonstrate the binary transformation process and show the feasibility of our approach. Two Visual Studio applications are transformed to run on a bare PC and one large bare PC application binary is linked dynamically and transformed to run with a bare PC Web server. the transformation process and the dynamic linking of binary modules help to identify design and research issues. Our work lays a foundation to achieve the ultimate goal of making applications independent of computing platforms and environments.

this paper presents a hierarchical system architecture for Mobile Cloud computing based on a novel 5G system architecture. Initially, a hierarchical system architecture is divided into three phases, i.e., foglet layer, service layer, and communication layer. Foglet layers provide the functionality of efficient resource sharing, the service layers assist the network by providing cloud services, and finally, the communication layers help in providing energy efficient communication using 5G system architecture. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing cloud computing example scenario regarding cost and time.

With the advances in technology like cloud computing, treatment approaches have become more collaborative, patient-centric and data-driven. Cloud enables us to capture and process a large amount of data produced during diabetes treatment. this data can be used to derive insights to provide personalized treatment, evaluate risks and conduct research. this paper explores the opportunities and challenges that diabetic care using cloud brings in.

Memory transfers between CPU host and GPU devices are known to impose heavy overhead on GPU applications. For GPU applications with large data inputs, memory transfers frequently take much longer than kernel execution time. For memory transfer mechanism for unpinned pages, current mechanism in CUDA library fails to achieve the maximum memory transfer potential. Memory bandwidth discrepancy between CPU and GPU are not properly considered in the current CUDA library. In our work, we propose a multithreaded memory copy technique that uses double queuing to fully utilize the PCIe bandwidth in GPU memory during the data transfers between host CPU and GPU device. Our technique doubles the memory transfer rate of current CUDA memory transfer in cudaMemcpy() by allowing multiple devices with different bandwidths to operate in a balanced manner.

Smart mobility management would be an important prerequisite for future fog computing systems. In this research, we propose a learning-based handover optimization for the Internet of Vehicles that would assist the smooth transition of device connections and offloaded tasks between fog nodes. To accomplish this, we make use of machine learning algorithms to learn from vehicle interactions with fog nodes. Our approach uses a three-layer feed-forward neural network to predict the correct fog node at a given location and time with 99.2 % accuracy on a test set. We also implement a dual stacked recurrent neural network (RNN) with long short-term memory (LSTM) cells capable of learning the latency, or cost, associated with these service requests. We create a simulation in JAMScript using a dataset of real-world vehicle movements to create a dataset to train these networks. We further propose the use of this predictive system in a smarter request routing mechanism to minimize the service interruption during handovers between fog nodes and to anticipate areas of low coverage through a series of experiments and test the models' performance on a test set.

the Future Internet will be able to connect most of the objects that are not yet connected on the current Internet. the Internet of things (IoT) is an important part of the Future Internet and involves connectivity between several physical and virtual objects, allowing the emergence of new services and applications. these intelligent objects, along with their tasks, constitute domain-specific applications (vertical markets), while ubiquitous and analytic services form independent domain services (horizontal markets). the development of these applications and services in these markets brings challenges such as deployment, scalability, integration, interoperability, mobility and performance. Recent research indicates that Microservices has been successfully applied by companies such as Netflix and SoundCloud to address some of these issues in their cloud computing applications. However, in the field of IoT, the use of Microservices to deal with these challenges still presents unresolved issues. In this paper, we present a reactive Microservices architecture and apply it in a Fog computing case study to investigate these challenges at the edge of the network. Finally, we evaluate our proposal from the perspective of performance of Microservices provided by intelligent objects (IoT gateways) at the edge of the network.

Serverless computing has introduced unprecedented levels of scalability and parallelism for the execution of High throughput computing tasks. this represents a challenge and an opportunity for different scientific workloads to be adapted to upcoming programming models that simplify the usage of such platforms. In this paper we introduce a serverless model for highly-parallel file-processing applications. We also describe a middleware implementation that supports the execution of customized execution environments based on Docker images on AWS Lambda, the leading serverless computing platform. Moreover, this middleware offers tools to manage the input/output of the serverless infrastructure and the creation of HTTP endpoints in a transparent way to the user. To test the programming model proposed and the middleware, this paper describes two case studies. the first one analyzes medical images with a high degree of parallelism. the second one presents an architecture to process video keyframes. the results from both case studies are discussed and a cost analysis of the medical image architecture comparing different Cloud options is carried out. the results show that the combination of a high-level programming model with the scalable capabilities of AWS Lambda makes it easy for end users to efficiently exploit serverless computing for the optimized and cost-effective execution of loosely-coupled tasks.

With the emergence of highly automated and autonomous connected vehicles, rigorous requirements in terms of responsiveness, security and scalability become necessary to enable new services that improve efficiency and safety on the road. In future networks, vehicles need to frequently perform handover procedures while crossing various dense heterogeneous cells, which may cause an unacceptable network service degradation. In this concept paper, we propose a fog-aided architecture for seamless handover. Fog computing can fill the architectural gap between clients and clouds to manage short lived information and enable novel latency-critical applications at the edge of networks. Accordingly, the proposed architecture, along with its unified integration of virtually all devices (end-devices, gateways and servers) and all networks (ad hoc, access and core), supports Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) distributed applications with crucial needs such as time-, safety-and security-critical network functions.
