Read-Modify-Write (RMW) instructions are widely used as the building blocks of a variety of higher level synchronization constructs, including locks, barriers, and lock-free data structures. Unfortunately, they are expensive in architectures such as x86 and SPARC which enforce (variants of) Total-Store-Order (TSO). A key reason is that RMWs in these architectures are ordered like a memory barrier, incurring the cost of a write-buffer drain in the critical path. Such strong ordering semantics are dictated by the requirements of the strict atomicity definition (type-1) that existing TSO RMWs use. Programmers often do not need such strong semantics. Besides, weakening the atomicity definition of TSO RMWs, would also weaken their ordering - thereby leading to more efficient hardware implementations. In this paper we argue for TSO RMWs to use weaker atomicity definitions - we consider two weaker definitions: type-2 and type-3, with different relaxed ordering differences. We formally specify how such weaker RMWs would be ordered, and show that type-2 RMWs, in particular, can seamlessly replace existing type-1 RMWs in common synchronization idioms - except in situations where a type-1 RMW is used as a memory barrier. Recent work has shown that the new C/C++ 11 concurrency model can be realized by generating conventional (type-1) RMWs for C/C++ 11 SC-atomic-writes and/or SC-atomic-reads. We formally prove that this is equally valid using the proposed type-2 RMWs;type-3 RMWs, on the other hand, could be used for SC-atomic-reads (and optionally SC-atomic-writes). We further propose efficient microarchitectural implementations for type-2 (type-3) RMWs - simulation results show that our implementation reduces the cost of an RMW by up to 58.9% (64.3%), which translates into an overall performance improvement of up to 9.0% (9.2%) on a set of parallel programs, including those from the SPLASH-2, PARSEC, and STAMP benchmarks.

the complexity of the well-explored regions of the programming language design space has increased substantially in the last twenty-five years with the addition of a large number of object-oriented programming languages (OOPLs). this design domain was already known to be large and complex before OOPLs came on the scene, and many offerings of the standard programming languages course before that time did not even mention the object-oriented programming (OOP) paradigm. Now that OOP has become mainstream, undergraduate programs which include a course on programming language design and implementation have responded by expanding their existing course or by jettisoning some of the alternative ideas in favor of expanded coverage of OOPLs. there are two facts, however, which must be confronted as we consider what information we would like to pass on to our students in this fascinating area of our discipline. the first is that the design space represented by OOPLs is large enough to justify a separate course, and the second is that a large number of ideas from other language paradigms appear in subsets of well-known languages for OOP. this paper presents a course in the design and implementation of programming languages that (as OOP itself did in the late eighties) turns some accepted notions "inside out" by proposing that the entire course be presented from the OOP point of view. Such a course has been offered by Grove City College for a decade and has matured into a very effective means of communicating essential programming language design and implementation ideas to our students. the course could be offered as the only advanced course in the area, as one course in a two-semester sequence, or as an alternative to the traditional course. Educational robots serve multiple purposes, including language learning, social skills development for students with autism, and improving communication skills. this research emphasizes the role of educational professionals in designing robotic learning activities, highlighting their understanding of pedagogy and student needs. Two language instructors co-designed programming workshops which aimed to teach them how to program the social robot NAO. they implemented robotic language learning activities that were used by 35 students in Finnish language courses. the results of this research suggested that hands-on programming workshops are an effective way to learn robot programming. Maintaining motivation during the sessions is facilitated by setting clear and concrete goals, monitoring progress, acquiring new knowledge, and following a precise schedule. the instructors faced challenges such as unexpected responses from the robots, the initial complexity of the programming software, and apprehensions about programming based on prior knowledge of text-based programming languages.

Increasing demands for energy eiciency constrain emerging hardware. these new hardware trends challenge the established assumptions in code generation and force us to rethink existing software optimization techniques. We propose a cross-layer redesign of the way compilers and the underlying microarchitecture are built and interact, to achieve both performance and high energy eiciency. In this paper, we address one of the main performance bottlenecksDlast-level cache misses-through a software-hardware co-design. Our approach is able to hide memory latency and attain increased memory and instruction level parallelism by orchestrating a non-speculative, execute-ahead paradigm in software (SWOOP). While out-of-order (OoO) architectures attempt to hide memory latency by dynamically reordering instructions, they do so through expensive, power-hungry, speculative mechanisms. We aim to shift this complexity into software, and we build upon compilation techniques inherited from VLIW, software pipelining, modulo scheduling, decoupled access-execution, and software prefetching. In contrast to previous approaches we do not rely on either software or hardware speculation that can be detrimental to eiciency. Our SWOOP compiler is enhanced with lightweight architectural support, thus being able to transform applications that include highly complex control-low and indirect memory accesses. the efectiveness of our software-hardware co-design is proven on the most limited but energy-eicient micro-architectures, non-speculative, in-order execution (InO) cores, which rely entirely on compile-time instruction scheduling. We show that (1) our approach achieves its goal in hiding the latency of the last-level cache misses and improves performance by 34% and energy eiciency by 23% over the baseline InO core, competitive with an oracle InO core with a perfect last-level cache;(2) can even exceed the performance of the oracle core, by exposing a higher degree of memory and instruction level

Arm Morello is a prototype system that supports CHERI hardware capabilities for improving runtime security. As Morello becomes more widely available, there is a growing effort to port open source code projects to this novel platform. Although high-level applications generally need minimal code refactoring for CHERI compatibility, low-level systems code bases require significant modification to comply with the stringent memory safety constraints that are dynamically enforced by Morello. In this paper, we describe our work on porting the MicroPython interpreter to Morello with the CheriBSD OS. Our key contribution is to present a set of generic lessons for adapting managed runtime execution environments to CHERI, including (1) a characterization of necessary source code changes, (2) an evaluation of runtime performance of the interpreter on Morello, and (3) a demonstration of pragmatic memory safety bug detection. Although MicroPython is a lightweight interpreter, mostly written in C, we believe that the changes we have implemented and the lessons we have learned are more widely applicable. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published description of meaningful experience for scripting language runtime engineering with CHERI and Morello.

this paper describes an ongoing effort to embed and verify differential dynamic logic (dL) in the Prototype Verification System (PVS). dL is a logic for specifying and formally reasoning about hybrid systems, i.e., systems that employ both continuous and discrete dynamics. there are several benefits of this effort. First, the embedding of dL in PVS offers an independent formal verification of the semantics and inference rules of dL. Second, the embedding is fully operational within PVS, giving PVS practitioners the ability to use dL in the formal specification and verification of hybrid systems. third, the rich specification language, type system, and powerful interactive prover of PVS can be used on dL objects. In addition to the embedding and verification of dL, a custom extension for Visual Studio Code has been developed, so that a stylized dL syntax can be used to specify hybrid programs and their properties. © 2022 acm.

We describe Charm++, an object oriented portable parallel programming language based on C++. Its design philosophy, implementation, sample applications and their performance on various parallel machines are described. Charm++ is an explicitly parallel language consisting of C++ with a few extensions. It provides a clear separation between sequential and parallel objects. the execution model of Charm++ is message driven, thus helping one write programs that are latencytolerant. the language supports multiple inheritance, dynamic binding, overloading, strong typing, and reuse for parallel objects. Charm++ provides specific modes for sharing information between parallel objects. Extensive dynamic load balancing strategies are provided. It is based on the Charm parallel programming system, and its runtime system implementation reuses most of the runtime system for Charm. © 1993 acm.

In this paper we introduce the iTask system: a set of combinators to specify work flows in a pure functional language at a very high level of abstraction. Work flow systems are automated systems in which tasks are coordinated that have to be executed by humans and computers. the combinators that we propose support work flow patterns commonly found in commercial work flow systems. Compared with most of these commercial systems, the iTask system offers several advantages: tasks are statically typed, tasks can be higher order, the combinators are fully compositional, dynamic and recursive work flows can be specified, and last but not least, the specification is used to generate an executable web-based multi-user work flow application. With the iTask system, useful work flows can be defined which cannot be expressed in other systems: work can be interrupted and subsequently directed to other workers for further processing. the implementation is special as well. It is based on the Clean iData toolkit which makes it possible to create fully dynamic, interactive, thin client web applications. thanks to the generic programming techniques used in the iData toolkit, the programming effort is reduced significantly: state handling, form rendering, user interaction, and storage management is handled automatically. the iTask system allows a task to be regarded as a special kind of persistent redex being reduced by the application user via task completion. the combinators control the order in which these redexes are made available to the application user. the system rewrites the persistent task redexes in a similar way as functions are rewritten in lazy functional languages.
