Client-side event logs may reveal patterns of usage of Web pages. Nevertheless, extracting useful and novel information from this voluminous data set is a challenge for evaluation tools, since a few minutes simple task may result in a sequence of hundreds of events. this work contributes with a technique to process these logs and build a Web page's usage graph summarizing statistical information of the Web page usage concerning one or more sessions. this graph reveals patterns of real usage data, which Human-Computer Interaction specialists may find useful for inspecting accessibility and usability issues. Moreover, Web usage miners can reuse the usage graph to apply other techniques to discover other patterns or rules. © 2010 acm.

In recent years, various multi-core architectures have become popular selections for the designs of mobile platforms. With the strong computing demands from many multimedia applications, how to energy-efficiently utilize the computing power of mobile platforms without violations of timing constraints has become a critical design problem. In this paper, a data-partitioning-based approach is proposed to explore the parallelism of multimedia workload processing over multiple cores. Dynamic voltage scaling and dynamic power management strategies are both considered in the dynamic scaling of the computing power of cores and the adjustment of the set of active cores, respectively. the practicability and the energy efficiency of the proposed algorithms were evaluated by a series of experiments and simulations, for which we have encouraging results. © 2010 acm.

In automated requirements trace retrieval, significant improvements can be realized through incorporating user feedback. In this paper we introduce a relatively new technique named Direct Query Manipulation (DQM) and compare its effectiveness against Rocchio, the current defacto standard for integrating user feedback into automated tracing methods. the two techniques are evaluated empirically through a series of simulations and a user study, conducted by tracing requirements for WorldVista, an electronic healthcare information system against requirements from the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology. Our results show that both Rocchio and DQM return significant improvements in trace quality in comparison to the vector space model, a fully automated technique. DQM performs slightly better than Rocchio in terms of trace quality with minimal difference in human effort. the hybrid approach provides further improvement over both individual approaches of DQM and Rocchio. © 2012 acm.

In the social network, competitive influence spread is the problem of finding positive seed vertices that propagate information so as to minimize the influence spread of negative vertices. However, the existing heuristic methods need to be further improved. therefore, we devote to prevent the diffusion of negative information under the competitive independent cascade (CIC) model. In this paper, we propose a new way to tackle the competitive influence problem, referred to as local influence tree (LIT). We carry out experiments on the real-world datasets, the experiments have verified the effectiveness of the proposed methods compared to the baseline methods. Copyright 2014 acm.

Motion blur often decreases the quality of document image and makes the text information within the document images unreachable by optical character recognition (OCR) or by a person. this paper presents a blur correction technique that aims to correct motion blur within document images. Given a blurred document image, an alpha channel map is first constructed based on specific image characteristics that are associated with text documents. Several blur parameters including blur direction and blur extent are then estimated from the constructed alpha channel map. Finally the blurred document image is restored by using Richardson-Lucy deconvolution technique based on the estimated blur parameters. Experiments on a number of document images with motion blur show that the proposed technique improves the document visual quality as well as the OCR performance significantly. © 2012 acm.

this paper presents an analysis of the data on representation of women in US liberal arts computer science departments, using 10 years' worth of IPEDS data. What began as a search for departments with exemplary representation ended with the conclusion that the representation data is too unstable to be a useful measure of success: the correlation between average representation values in consecutive five-year periods is small, only r=0.156, and not significantly different from zero (p=0.143, t=1.477) for this set of institutions. Other metrics and sample populations are considered with similar results. this result has important implications for studies assessing the impact of departmental interventions on the representation of women, as well as research on the factors that influence representation. © 2009 acm.

Context-aware recommender systems (CARS) additionally take contexts into consideration and try to adapt users' preferences according to their contextual situations. In the traditional recommender systems (RS), latent factor models, such as matrix factorization and latent dirichlet allocation, have demonstrated their efficiencies. Apparently, contexts could be those possible latent factors - they are "latent" ones if we have no pre-knowledge of them, but currently we have explicit contextual information at hand, why not treat and use them in a similar way as the latent factors? Most research in CARS seeks ways to incorporate contexts in the recommendation process, but none of them continue to use the contexts in a way of "latent" factors. In this work, the research ideas, relevant challenges and expected outcomes about using contexts in a way of "latent" factors are introduced and discussed as one novel research direction in the CARS domain, and a semi-supervised context-aware matrix factorization approach is proposed as a result. In this paper, we describe PUMAS [3], a framework based on Ubiquitous Agents for accessing Web Information Systems (WIS) through Mobile Devices (MD). the objective of PUMAS is to adapt the information delivered to a nomadic user (who often changes her/his location) according to her/his preferences, intentions and history in the system and, to the limited capacities of her/his MD. this paper describes the agentTool Process Editor (APE), an Eclipse plug-in based on the Eclipse Process Framework. the aim of APE is to facilitate the design, verification, and management of custom agent-oriented software development processes. APE provides five basic structures. the Library is a repository of agent-oriented method fragments. A Process Editor allows the management of tailored processes. Task Constraints help process engineers specify guidelines to constrain how tasks can be assembled, while a Process Consistency mechanism verifies the consistency of tailored processes against those constraints. Finally, the Process Management integrates APE with the agentTool III development environment and provides a way to measure project progress using Earned Value Analysis. Copyright 2009 acm.

this paper introduces a new hybrid Genetic Algorithm (GA) crossover approach, Targeted EDA (TEDA), that combines a targeted intervention principle with Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDA) to solve optimal control problems. the approach is suited to tasks where the number of interventions used is an important part of solution fitness and includes problems such as cancer chemotherapy scheduling. Fitness Directed Crossover (FDC) is a modified GA crossover method that actively drives the number of selected control interventions towards those of a fitter individual. EDA are able to find fit solutions by discovering patterns within a population of selected individuals. TEDA uses FDC to select a suitable number of interventions to use while using an EDA based approach to select which interventions to set. Results suggest that by combining the two approaches, TEDA is able to outperform both EDA and FDC on a sample optimal control problem. © 2012 acm.
