We extend and implement a modeling language based on concurrent active objects with application-level scheduling policies. the language allows a programmer to assign priorities at the application level, for example, to method definitions and method invocations, and assign corresponding policies to the individual active objects for scheduling the messages. thus, we leverage scheduling and performance related issues, which are becoming increasingly important in multi-core and cloud applications, from the underlying operating system to the application level. We describe a tool-set to transform models of active objects extended with application-level scheduling policies into Java. this tool-set allows a direct use of Java class libraries;thus, we obtain a full-fledged programming language based on active objects which allows for high-level control of deployment related issues. © 2012 acm.

Cloud computing is an elastic execution environment becoming the dominating solution for scalable and on-demand computing, and a large market of cloud providers has recently emerged. IaaS is a realisation of the Cloud computing at the level of processing, storage and networking resources. Currently, users lack a consolidated view of the IaaS market and it is time-consuming and cumbersome to identify the most suitable IaaS offers. IaaS services are highly configurable and their properties are often request-dependent and change dynamically. In this paper we introduce a service matchmaking approach for IaaS. We present models to define expressive search requests and IaaS descriptions which are grounded in lightweight semantic formalisms of RDF and SPARQL, and use Linked Data. Our approach supports dynamic generation of IaaS offers, and their filtering and ranking. We provide a proof-of-concept matchmaker operating on expressive search requests and descriptions of nineteen IaaS services including: Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, ElasticHosts, CloudSigma, and Joyent-Cloud. the sharing of tacit knowledge is a strategic factor for the success of software process, from a number of perspectives: training, project assimilation, and reducing noise in knowledge transfer. Pair programming is supposed to be a practice suitable for this purpose. Unfortunately, the building of tacit knowledge is determined by factors that are difficult to isolate and capture because they concern personal attitude and capability. thus, we have focused on the possible causes forming the individual ability, that can be isolated and studied, such as the individual education background. We have applied the practice of working in pairs to the design phase. We have made an experiment and a replica in academic environment, in order to understand the relationship between the building of knowledge through the practice and the individual background. In this paper we discuss the replica and compare the results with the first experiment's ones. Copyright 2005 acm.

Two major challenges in inferring the sparse topological architecture of Gene Regulatory Networks using computational methods are 1) the low accuracy of predicting connections between genes and 2) the excessive computational cost. In order to address these challenges, we have exploited some biological features of yeast cell cycle. One such feature is that, a high proportion of Cell Cycle Regulated genes are periodically expressed;that is genes are maximally expressed to affect and control the regulation of other genes and on completing certain tasks;they are repressed by some other regulator genes. thus the whole cell cycle progresses systematically through the successive activation and inactivation of CCR genes. To use this feature, we have calculated the peak time of individual genes which falls into one/more phases of the cell cycle. therefore, genes that peak in the interval of the same phase of the cell cycle have been grouped together. Finally, we have applied the Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) algorithm within distinct phases of genes. As a consequence, both the accuracy and the computational cost of our learning algorithm have been improved in comparison with the existing DBN algorithms. Copyright 2009 acm.

the aim of this paper is to investigate the assignment problem of a cloud computing system where user requests to run virtual machines continuously arrive and the associated virtual machines (VMs) must be hosted on physical machines (PMs). Each PM has limited resource amounts for four kinds of resources, i.e., CPU, disk, memory, and network bandwidth. Also, each VM has the resource requirements for the four kinds resources in a PM. We propose an online VM-to-PM assignment algorithm, the Delay-based Incrementally Mapping Algorithm (DIMA), to assign VMs to PMs. We attempt to reduce resource wastes on running PMs such that the number of PMs can be minimized. the algorithm uses a user-defined variable to control the number of VMs handled at some time unit. the corresponding VM for an arrival VM request does not be host by a PM until the number of waiting VM requests reaches the value of the user-defined variable. A series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the proposed algorithm. the experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed DIMA scheme is better than the greedy algorithm. Extensive research activities are recently directed towards the Semantic Web as a future form of the Web. Consequently, Web search as the key technology of the Web is evolving towards some novel form of Semantic Web search. A very promising recent approach to such Semantic Web search is based on combining standard Web search with ontological background knowledge and using standard Web search engines as the main inference motor of Semantic Web search. In this paper, we propose to further enhance this approach to Semantic Web search by the use of inductive reasoning. this adds the important ability to handle inconsistencies, noise, and incompleteness, which often occur in distributed and heterogeneous environments, such as the Web. We report on a prototype implementation of the new approach and extensive experimental results. © 2010 acm.

Many Universities and Colleges are building interdisciplinary programs between engineering and fine arts that focus on games, special effects, animation and other areas that require interdisciplinary efforts. this is in response to the needs of the entertainment industries. the video game and 3D animation businesses fundamentally involve computer scientists and artists working closely together. the Entertainment Arts and Engineering (EAE) program (founded in 2007) is an undergraduate interdisciplinary program at the University of Utah (UofU). Students pursuing an animation or computer science degree may enroll in the program as a means of focusing their education on digital arts and entertainment. Two courses taught at the UofU with curriculum in the middle of the continuum between the two departments are the courses: Digital Character Production and Machinima. these courses provide an extraordinary applied learning experience for students to combine learning concepts that are not commonly taught together. the curriculums are designed to teach students to breakdown extremely complex problems, requiring understanding from both disciplines, into manageable segments that allow easy understanding of diverse concepts from computer graphics principles to sculptural ideology and from graphic algorithms to film/storytelling. It is a process that provides a direct view of the correlations of the critical concepts from each of the disciplines. this paper presents our insights from teaching and reviewing these two classes. © 2009 acm.

Early aspects are crosscutting concerns that are identified and addressed at the requirements and architecture level, while code aspects are crosscutting concerns that manifest at the code level. Currently, there are many approaches to address the identification and modularization of these cross-cutting concerns at each level, but very few techniques try to analyze the relationship between early aspects and code aspects. this paper presents a tool for automating the process of identifying traceability links between requirements-level aspects and code aspects, which is a first step towards an in-depth analysis. We also present an empirical evaluation of the tool with a real-life Web-based information system and a software product line for handling data on mobile devices. the results show that we can identify traceability links between early aspects and code aspects with a high accuracy. © 2012 acm.

A parallel computing mode based on GPU is proposed for the alignment of vast amounts of antibody DNA sequences produced by high-throughput sequencing technologies. Taking advantage of the massively parallel Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) of NVIDIA Tesla GPUs, we design a sequence alignment process by CPU-GPU hybrid computing. the mode proposed can effectively solve specific alignment problems of high-throughput sequence. Under the same computer hardware condition, the antibody DNA sequences from two animals, zebrafish and mouse, were aligned using CPU-GPU hybrid mode and CPU-only mode respectively, then their performances were compared. the experimental result demonstrates that the computing speed of CPU-GPU hybrid mode on sequence alignment is up to 50 times faster than that of CPU-only mode. Generally, our hybrid computing mode can provide a low-cost and high-speed solution for massive antibody sequence alignment. © 2012 Authors.

Voltage islanding technique in Network-on-Chip (NoC) can significantly reduce the computational energy consumption by scaling down the voltage levels of the processing elements (PEs). this reduction in energy consumption comes at the cost of the energy consumption of the level shifters between voltage islands. Moreover, from physical design perspective it is desirable to have a limited number of voltage islands. Considering voltage islanding during mapping of the PEs to the NoC routers can significantly reduce both the computational and the level-shifter energy consumptions and the communication energy consumption on the NoC links. In this paper, we formulate the problem as an optimization problem with an objective of minimizing the overall energy consumption constrained by the performance in terms of delay and the maximum number of voltage islands. We provide the optimal solution to our problem using Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) formulation. We also propose a heuristic based on random greedy selection to solve the problem. Experimental results using E3S benchmark applications and some real applications show that the heuristic finds near-optimal solution in almost all cases in a very small fraction of the time required to achieve the optimal solution. © 2010 acm.
