It is difficult to detect vulnerabilities until they manifest themselves as security failures in the operational stage of software, because the security concerns are not addressed or known sufficiently early during software development. Complexity, coupling, and cohesion (CCC) related software metrics can be measured during the earlier phases of software development. If empirical relationships can be discovered between CCC metrics and vulnerabilities, these metrics could aid software developers to take proactive actions against potential vulnerabilities in software. In this paper, we conduct an extensive case study on Mozilla Firefox to provide empirical evidence on how vulnerabilities are related to complexity, coupling, and cohesion. We find that CCC metrics are correlated to vulnerabilities at a statistically significant level. We further examine the correlations to determine which level (design or code) of CCC metrics are better indicators of vulnerabilities. We also observe that the correlation patterns are stable across multiple releases of the software. these observations show that CCC metrics can be dependably used as early indicators of vulnerabilities in software. © 2010 acm.

Cloud computing has gained popularity in both research and industrial communities. Cloud users can acquire computing resources on a need basis, achieving on demand scalability;Cloud providers can maximize resource utilizations of datacenters, increasing their return on investments. While Cloud systems are usually hosted in large datacenters and are centrally managed, other types of Cloud architectures can be imagined. In this paper we describe the design and prototype implementation of a fully decentralized, P2P Cloud. A P2P Cloud allows organizations or even individual to build a computing infrastructure out of existing resources, which can be easily allocated among different tasks. We focus on the problem of maintaining a coherent structure over a set of unreliable computing resources. We show that gossip-based protocols can be used to maintain an overlay network on top of the computing nodes, and to partition the set of resources into multiple slices in such a way that the failure of individual nodes do not compromise the overall structure. Resource partitioning is one of the most important features of a Cloud, and therefore must be supported efficiently and reliably on any Cloud architecture. We describe a prototype Java implementation that is being developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2012 acm.

To improve the performance of mobile computers, a number of broadcast based cache invalidation schemes have been proposed in the past to support object locality. However most of these schemes have focused on providing support for client disconnection and reducing query delay. the size of invalidation reports and the effect of invalidating items cached by many clients are also important issues that must be addressed in order to provide cost-efficient cache invalidation in a mobile environment. In this paper, we propose two techniques, Validation-Invalidation Reports (VIR) and the Delayed Requests Scheme (DRS) to address these issues. VIR uses a combination of validation and invalidation reports, allowing the server to construct and broadcast smaller reports at each interval, thus improving downlink channel utilization. DRS addresses the problem where multiple clients request for the same data items. It introduces a "cool down" period after an invalidation, to reduce the number of uplink requests sent by clients. Simulation results show that compared to the original TS approach [1], the proposed schemes lower transmission cost associated with cache invalidation by between 5%-25% in the downlink channel and between 10%-40% in the uplink channel.

the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science program is intended to reflect enough of a common core of a first semester or year of university-level computer science so that placement or credit can be awarded for work done before college. the SIGCSE symposia have a long history of providing forums for discussing the evolution of the AP program from its inception [1] to the transition from Pascal to C++ [3] to the transition from C++ to Java [2,5,7,8,9]. Panels related to how credit and placement are awarded have also been part of the SIGCSE conferences [4,6]. this special session is a report of the ongoing process of developing new and possible wide-ranging changes to the AP program. © 2009 acm.

Stroke commonly leads to partial or complete paralysis of one side of the body and there is limited availability of therapists to provide rehabilitation. It is a priority therefore to identify the most effective rehabilitation strategies and/or pharmacotherapies. Motor learning, the essential process underpinning rehabilitation, can be assessed more quickly and robustly than outcomes from rehabilitation. In this paper we describe a proof of concept system that utilises a bespoke video game to measure the critical components of motor learning. We demonstrate that it is sensitive enough to detect how simple changes in therapist instruction significantly change motor performance and learning. Although video games have been shown to aid in rehabilitation, this is the first time video games have been used to derive early response markers, based on the measurement of performance and motor learning, for use in the evaluation of the efficacy of a rehabilitation strategy. Inversions are one of the most frequent large-scale rearrangements observed in actual genomes. While a large body of literature exists on mathematical problems related to the computation of the inversion distance between abstract genomes, these works generally do not take into account that most inversions in bacterial chromosomes are symmetric or roughly symmetric with respect to the origin of replication. We define a new problem: how to sort genomes (or permutations) using almost-symmetric inversions. We show an algorithm that can sort any permutation using only almost-symmetric inversions. Two variants of this algorithm are presented that have better performance in practice. We explore the question of determining the minimum number of almost-symmetric inversions needed to sort a genome by presenting lower and upper bounds and results for special permutation families. the results obtained are the first steps in exploring this interesting new problem. © 2012 acm.

At the SIGCSE symposium in 2007, the acm Education Board organized a well-attended special session exploring the crisis in computing education and its underlying causes. [2]. the idea behind the session was to provide a forum at which a larger and more broadly representative subset of the education community could engage in direct dialogue with the members of the acm Education Board and Education Council, who are charged with developing educational policy for the acm as a whole. Last year, we extended that dialogue and explored concrete strategies for emphasizing the "passion, beauty, joy, and awe" (PBJA) of computing [3] about which Grady Booch spoke so eloquently in his 2007 keynote address [1]. the extremely positive feedback we received served as motivation to continue the discussion this year, to allow us to hear from new voices and receive updates on the current state of the crisis. It is increasingly clear that students today find less joy in the process of creating software than their predecessors did a generation ago. At the same time, these skills have become increasingly important, forcing companies to cast an ever widening net in their search for people with the necessary skills and training. Continued progress in the computing disciplines - and indeed the economic health of a society that relies increasingly on computing technology - can continue only if we can encourage an even larger number of students to pursue the many opportunities that careers in computing provide. © 2009 acm.

the labor-intensive and time-consuming process of annotating data is a serious bottleneck in many pattern recognition applications when handling massive datasets. Active learning strategies have been sought to reduce the cost on human annotation, by means of automatically selecting the most informative unlabeled samples for annotation. the critical issue lies on the selection of such samples. As an effective solution, we propose an active learning approach that preprocesses the dataset, efficiently reduces and organizes a learning set of samples and selects the most representative ones for human annotation. Experiments performed on real datasets show that the proposed approach requires only a few iterations to achieve high accuracy, keeping user involvement to a minimum. Copyright 2013 acm.

Users expect access to Web data from a wide range of devices, both wired and wireless. Many users switch back and forth between devices, including laptops and Personal Data Assistants (PDAs), and expect to be able to continue working with that data. the goal of this research is to inform the design of applications that support the user by providing reasonably seamless migration of Web data among internet-compatible devices with minimal loss of effectiveness and efficiency. Earlier studies concentrated on the dynamic transformation of text content, lists, and forms embedded in web pages for access on a range of devices from desktop to handheld. this study focuses on the transformation of large tables onto small mobile devices. In this paper we report on the results of two user studies that examine effectiveness and efficiency of three basic models for the display of tables, originally intended for use on larger screen, on PDA size screens for both simple and complex tasks. In this paper, we explore the problem of processing a novel type of location based queries, named the location based top-k query, which involves both of spatial and non-spatial specifications for data objects in the wireless broadcasting system. We introduce two methods for processing location based top-k queries on the broadcast stream. In the first method, the search algorithm runs on the broadcast aggregate R-tree (aR-tree). However, the aR-tree may deteriorate the search performance, especially in terms of the tuning time. With this problem in mind, we propose a novel index structure, called the bit-vector R-tree (bR-tree), which stores additional bit-vector information to facilitate processing of location based top-k queries. the search algorithm on the broadcast bR-tree is also described. Our simulation experiments demonstrate that the bR-tree method clearly outperforms the aR-tree method in terms of the tuning time, while maintaining similar or better performance in terms of the access time. © 2010 acm.
