We report on a recently funded project called Renaissance computing, an initiative for promoting student participation in computing. We propose a radical re-thinking not only of our core curriculum in CS, but of the role of CS at the university level. In our conception, "computational thinking" is neither easily separated from other endeavors nor easily balkanized into a single department. We thus imagine a CS curriculum that is inextricably linked to other domains. Our proposed initiative covers introductory, depth, and capstone courses, targeting both CS majors and minors. It is also aimed to develop interdisciplinary CS courses in sciences, engineering, arts, and humanities. Furthermore, the framework embraces collaborative learning to help improve learning. © 2009 acm.

this paper presents a design and evaluates the performance of a genetic scheduler for electric vehicles, aiming at reducing the peak load of a fast charging station while meeting the time constraint of all charging requests. Upon the preemptive task model consisting of actuation time, operation length, deadline, and a consumption profile, the proposed scheduler fills the allocation table, by which charging tasks can be started, suspended, and resume at each time slot. To obtain a better initial population, our heuristic approach selects time slots having the lowest power load until the previous task allocation. then, the regular genetic operations further improve the schedule, additionally creating new chromosomes capable of satisfying all time constraints. the performance measurement result obtained from a prototype implementation shows that our scheme can reduce the peak load for the given charging task sets by up to 11.0 %, compared with a conventional scheme. © 2012 Authors.

Flash memory based embedded computing systems are becoming increasingly prevalent. these systems typically have to provide an instant start-up time. However, we observe that mounting a file system for flash memory takes 1 to 25 seconds mainly depending on the flash capacity. Since the flash chip capacity is doubled in every year, this mounting time will soon become the most dominant reason of the delay of system start-up time. therefore, in this paper, we present instant mounting techniques for flash file systems by storing the in-memory file system metadata to flash memory when unmounting the file system and reloading the stored metadata quickly when mounting the file system. these metadata snapshot techniques are specifically developed for NOR- and NAND-type flash memories, while at the same time, overcoming their physical constraints. the proposed techniques check the validity of the stored snapshot and use the proposed fast crash recovery techniques when the snapshot is invalid. Based on the experimental results, the proposed techniques can reduce the flash mounting time by about two orders of magnitude over the existing de facto standard flash file system. One of the most fundamental issues in computer security is protecting sensitive files from unauthorized access. Traditional file protection tools run inside the target operating system, which hosts sensitive files. this makes previous approaches vulnerable in face of a compromised OS. To address this limitation, recent approaches seek for a good isolation by putting file system into a dedicated virtual machine or by using a network file system. However, they suffer a sharp increase in trusted computing base size which degrades their reliability. In this paper, we present Filesafe, a special purpose hy-pervisor aimed at protecting sensitive files in a compromised operating system. It bridges the semantic gap between guest OS and hypervisor by reconstructing file hierarchy from raw data, which incurs no runtime overhead. By enforcing security policies created in hypervisor, Filesafe could prevent sensitive files from unauthorized access even if they have kernel privileges in guest OS. We have implemented a proof-of-concept prototype on Windows XP with FAT32 file system. Furthermore, we evaluate Filesafe's performance and code size to demonstrate it is practical in real world scenarios. © 2012 acm.

We develop an effective method for improving the segmentation result based on the Multi-Stencils Fast Marching method (MSFM). In MSFM, the gradient information of the image plays a vital role for calculating edges. It is straightforward to obtain the edge of good quality images;however, MSFM may not have robust edge maps available for images with spurious edges. thus, a special multi-direction circumscribed circle filter is proposed to calculate the image gradient information which is then used in the MSFM. Using the new gradient information, better image contours can be obtained with MSFM. the size of the radius used in our circle filter is constant even the standard deviation of zero-mean Gaussian noise changes while the parameters of mean filter and Canny filter for gradient computation have to be correctly selected according to different noisy images. Our proposed method shows that it is effective through the experiments of image segmentation. © 2012 acm.

As enrollments in engineering and computer science programs around the world have fallen in recent years, those who wish to see this trend reversed take heart from findings that children are more likely to develop an abiding interest in technology if they are exposed to it at an early age [3, 9]. In line with this research, we now see more summer camps and workshops being offered to middle school students with the objective of teaching programming and computer technology [1, 6, 8, 12]. To offer students a stimulating and interesting environment while teaching computing subjects, the learning tools in these camps usually revolve around robots and graphical programming of animations or games. these tools tend to mainly attract youngsters who like robotics or game design. However, we believe that we can improve the diversity of the student pool by introducing other topics. In this paper, we describe our experience in designing and organizing a programming course that focuses on wearable computing, fashion and design for middle school students. We will show that 1) wearable computing is interesting and inspiring to the students, 2) wearable computing motivates both boys and girls to learn technology and computing, which implies that it may be able to increase the potential computer science population, 3) wearable computing can provide a space for students to exercise their creativity while at the same time, teaching them about technology and programming. © 2009 acm.

this paper presents and discusses a web-based software tool called GraphPad designed to facilitate interactivity in a CS2 or CS7 (data structures) course in which Tablet PCs or WACOM tablets are available. We describe how GraphPad enables an instructor to: establish a temporary network with the instructor's Tablet as server and the students' Tablets as clients, broadcast instructions and collect student Ink responses, evaluate student submissions and distribute evaluations with a single button-click, use student submissions as examples to guide lecture, and save student submissions in a database. the saved submissions may then be reviewed individually, tagged for errors, and analyzed statistically. An immediate goal is to use GraphPad to deliver CS2/CS7 course content more effectively. A long term goal is to use data collected by GraphPad to help understand the thought process of the CS2/CS7 student for the purpose of identifying students at risk early in order to provide intervention assistance. © 2009 acm.

In this paper we consider an event based architectural component that may overcome the present reluctance to the use of Service Orientation (SOA) in military distributed real-time environments. In particular, we propose a hybrid architecture component that is decentralised in all respects, making it more reactive to real-time events, as well as being easier to analyse and adapt to changing needs. As centralised scheduling and orchestration of SOA services does not scale to distributed systems, our architecture removes this key inhibitor by distributing the data and control flow to a rule-driven Distributed Real-Time SOA (DRT-SOA) component that resides with each service. Embedded deadline driven task scheduling means each service can now dynamically adjust to changes in process priorities. We also propose a method of analysing the performance of the new architecture using the dynamics of Petri Nets and the guarantees of Real-Time Calculus. We present task level worst case analysis results using the proposed method and also present results obtained from an implementation of the proposed architecture in a naval combat system context. Frameworks are tools that promote the reuse of pieces of software within specific domains. An intrinsic property of frameworks is the large amount of intertwined code found across its several modules. this configures an architecture whose modules can hardly be decoupled. Consequently, an application derived from a framework usually carries on the full framework architecture, irrespective of the subset of application requirements. this compromises the maintainability, evolution and reusability of both framework and applications derived from it. To deal with this problem, this paper introduces the concept of Framework Product Lines (FPL). In a FPL, each member - or configuration - is a framework that contains only a subset of the FPL features according to the application requirements and rules that constrain their composition. thus, this paper presents the framework product lines concept and shows its use for evolving an application framework towards FPL. Results show preliminary gains in terms of reusability and maintainability in both evolved framework and applications derived from it. © 2012 acm.

the quest for better computing infrastructure for geospatial applications has been a constant endeavor for geoscientists. With the recent proliferation of cloud offerings, a range of new opportunities have become available. the challenge, however, is to make the best use of cloud platforms. Two directions are particularly important for addressing this challenge: a) developing new design approaches that are suitable for geoscience applications destined for the clouds, and b) accurately assessing the level of performance that can be expected when a given application is hosted on a given cloud platform with a specific configuration. this would enable scientists to better choose cloud solutions. In this paper, we focus on the latter direction. We use a typical data- and compute-intensive geoscience application, namely spatial interpolation, as a case study to assess the benefits of cloud computing for geoscience applications. We study the performance of the application on several types of cloud instances and provide a cost/benefit analysis that gives useful insights to geospatial and Earth scientists when they consider cloud options.
