this talk presents three-dimensional numerical simulations of oceanic trade cumulus clouds underlying stratocumulus clouds. they use a case studied in a Global Energy and Water Experiment Cloud System Study (GCSS) model intercomparison that is loosely based on observed conditions during the Atlantic Trade Cumulus Experiment (ATEX). this case study is motivated by the importance of this cloud type to global cloud radiative forcing, and their role as a feeder system for deep convection in the tropics. this study focuses on the sensitivity of the modeled cloud field to the domain size and the grid spacing. Domain widths from 6.5 to 20 kilometers and horizontal grid spacings ranging from 10 to 80 meters, with corresponding vertical grid spacing ranging from 5 to 40 m, are studied, involving domains with over 1000 gridpoints in each horizontal dimension. the combination of large domain size and small grid resolution (up to 2.5 billion grid-cells) provides an unprecedented perspective on this type of convection. this is in contrast to prior LES simulations which have often used domains a few kilometers wide. the larger domain size considered here is comparable to the grid resolution of a typical current mesoscale model (a similar resolution will soon be achieved in some global weather forecast models), and can better represent the potential horizontal variability achievable within a mesoscale grid cell. these simulations are made possible by massively parallel computations using 1.3 terabytes of memory and over 1000 processors.

this paper presents a hybrid algorithm in the area of peer recommendation in Twitter. Due to the big data issue on Twitter, we define a filtering strategy to reduce the number of candidates who might be recommended to the target user. Meanwhile, we refine the content-based similarity and graph-based similarity algorithms proposed by other academics. Moreover, we define a user model and weighting formula to leverage these two algorithms. According to the similarity degree between the candidates and the target user, we recommend the top k most similar candidates to the target user as our focused peers. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms and other algorithms, we conduct a personalized survey and employ measurements like recall, precision and F1 metric. the evaluation results demonstrate that our hybrid algorithm is better than the pure content-based similarity algorithm and pure graph-based similarity algorithm. Modular and flexible software components can be useful for reuse across a class of domain-specific applications or product lines. By varying the composition of components suited to a particular product line, an assortment of applications can be developed to support differing operational needs. A top-down approach to the design components for a specific application may be effective, however a more evolutionary approach is needed to support the specification of components suited for a class of applications. In addition, such evolutionary approaches require support for the knowledge transfer that must occur from domain experts, who are not software experts, to skilled software engineers. By combining concepts from Software Product Line Development (SPLD) and other evolutionary design techniques, a new, use case-driven approach has been created called Component-Based Product Line Analysis and Design (C-PLAD). this approach was used to develop components in the domain of image-guided surgery applications. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are envisaged to become a flexible platform for monitoring road traffic, which will gradually replace more cumbersome fixed sensor deployments. the efficacy of vehicle-assisted traffic monitoring systems depends on the freshness of traffic data that they can deliver to users, and the bandwidth used to do so. Clearly, high data freshness will allow users to estimate trip times accurately, and to select the fastest route to a destination. Low bandwidth utilization will allow the traffic monitoring application to coexist symbiotically with a wide variety of vehicle-based applications, ranging from road safety to advertising and entertainment. In this paper, we investigate the problem of minimizing the bandwidth utilization of a vehicle-assisted traffic monitoring system, whilst adhering to user-defined requirements for data freshness. the novelty of our approach is that we jointly optimize two intertwined aspects of traffic monitoring: data acquisition and data forwarding. We investigate how their combined operation trades data freshness for bandwidth utilization, and we propose a novel mechanism that fine-tunes their parameters to optimize the overall system performance. Our mechanism is evaluated using realistic vehicular traces on a real city map. Copyright 2009 acm.

In Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networked systems, participating nodes can be frequently disconnected from the networks because of several reasons such as users' intentions, nodes' failures, and network problems. this may increase the loss-ratio of the data and some other routing information;it may spoil the reliability of the whole P2P networks. Several works have been made to improve their reliability and availability based on existing Distributed Hash Tables (DHT) schemes. However, they have some trade-off relation between the performance and the reliability of the P2P networks. In this paper, we present Chordet, which is an efficient and transparent replication scheme for Chord-based P2P networks. Chordet replicates the data stored in the participating nodes so that they are evenly distributed. Using Chordet, the nodes can reduce lookup failure rates and lookup path length. Moreover, not all nodes need to implement proposed replication algorithm. Our simulation results show that Chordet outperforms the previous schemes in terms of both performance and reliability of the whole P2P networks. © 2010 acm.

this paper shows the efficiency of prefix and non-prefix codes for searching over compressed handheld databases. Byte Pair Encoding (BPE), Tagged Suboptimal Code (TSC), and Huffman encoding are the compression techniques used in the evaluation. By compressing handheld databases and searching over compressed text without needing to expand the databases, more data will be stored and more applications can be used. Experimental results show that about 33% more space has been achieved in the compressed handhelds' databases when using Searching over Compressed Text using BPE (SCTB) or Searching over Compressed Text using TSC (SCTT) solutions. Moreover, both solutions are 6.6 times faster than decompressing the databases followed by a linear search in all different sizes of databases. Efficiency performance shows that SCTB is the recommended solution for databases consisting of large-sized records and rarely updated, and SCTT is the recommended method for frequently updated databases or consisting of small-sized records. TSC and BPE compression schemes could also be used to accelerate wireless connectivity, web clipping, or databases transfer between handheld devices and computers, since these databases are usually small in size. Recently, several studies have proposed to utilize spatial correlation of sensor readings and approximate answers to select only a subset of representative nodes for reading reporting in the WSN monitoring applications. Although having achieved substantial energy saving, these studies suffered from high control overhead or did not fully exploit spatial correlation. In this paper, we propose an in-network approximate data gathering algorithm exploiting spatial correlation. the proposed algorithm consists of two phases: in-network clustering phase and reading streaming phase. In the former phase, we present an in-network clustering scheme exploiting spatial correlations of sensor readings as well as cluster readings to further reduce the number of representative nodes. On the other hand, the latter phase employs an adaptive cluster maintenance scheme that ensures the user to obtain the reading answers of desired quality despite changing sensor readings. the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms prior algorithms in terms of network lifetime and number of representative nodes. © 2012 acm.

In Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Service-Oriented computing (SOC), service collaboration is an important aspect. nile service collaboration protocols for data exchange are well explored, the Dynamic Process Collaboration (DPC) is still a challenging issue. the DPC brings new features and uncertainty to the current SOA/SOC, such as run-time behavior evaluation, dynamic collaboration performance measurement and dynamic Recomposition/Reconfiguration capability assessment. this paper presents the Dynamic Service-Oriented Collaboration Simulation (DSOCS) framework we have developed, which supports the dynamic collaboration, development, simulation, and evaluation of large scale SOA systems. the distinct features of the framework include automated simulation code generation from the specification, code deployment, and simulation of different architectures with a template-based platform builder, service-oriented multi-agent simulation for easy reconfiguration, and dynamic analyses of results from evaluation and monitoring. the framework and the associated tools have been implemented and applied in several governmental and industrial projects.

Cloud services such as Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud and IBM's SmartCloud are quickly changing the way organizations are dealing with IT infrastructures and are providing online services. Today, if an organization needs computing power, it can simply buy it online by instantiating a virtual server image on the cloud. Servers can be quickly launched and shut down via application programming interfaces, offering the user a greater flexibility compared to traditional server rooms. this paper explores the general security risks associated with using virtual server images from the public catalogs of cloud service providers. In particular, we investigate in detail the security problems of public images that are available on the Amazon EC2 service. We describe the design and implementation of an automated system that we used to instantiate and analyze the security of public AMIs on the Amazon EC2 platform, and provide detailed descriptions of the security tests that we performed on each image. Our findings demonstrate that both the users and the providers of public AMIs may be vulnerable to security risks such as unauthorized access, malware infections, and loss of sensitive information. the Amazon Web Services Security Team has acknowledged our findings, and has already taken steps to properly address all the security risks we present in this paper. © 2012 acm.
