the distinguished features of mobile computing bring both opportunities and challenges to the development of Mobile Social Networking (MSN) applications. Learning the successful experiences from existing MSN applications is valuable to both industry and academy. the paper aims at identifying the success factors of Instagram, a well-known MSN application. By performing a historical case study, rapid development and reaction, continuous focus on system scalability on demand, and creating a good external environment are regarded as the three important success factors. To achieve those success factors, 1) using existing mature Open Source Software (OSS) extensively and consulting resident experts at websites when necessary are the secrets to develop and react to new requirements rapidly;2) monitoring the status of the system by tools and focusing on scalability in both architecture design and detail optimization are vital to guarantee the system scalable on demand;and 3) creating appropriate social networks for different type of stakeholders using right popular social media tools is important to create a good external environment effectively. Based on these insights, the development methodology of Instagram has been extracted, that can be used to guide the MSN application development. At the end, the validation, reliability and generalizability of the information gathered from the case study are discussed thoroughly. Copyright 2014 acm.

Although the research area of self-organising systems is well established, their construction is often ad hoc. Consequently, such software is difficult reuse across applications that require similar functionality of have similar goals. the development of self-organising applications and, a fortiori, self-organising mobile applications is therefore limited to developers who are experts in specific self-organising mechanisms. As a first step towards addressing this, this paper discusses the notion of self-organising mechanisms provided as services for building higher level functionality in a modular way. this eases reuse and thus provides separation of concerns. Additionally, because of the dynamic and heterogeneous nature of mobile networks, services need to adapt themselves in order to ensure both functional and non-functional requirements. this paper discusses whether the self-management of self-organising mobile applications can be achieved in a modular fashion, via the self-management of low level self-organising services it employs, rather than considering the management of the complex system as a whole. We empirically investigate two non-functional aspects: resource optimisation and accuracy. Copyright 2014 acm.

We present i*Chameleon, a configurable and extensible multimodal platform for developing highly interactive applications. the platform leverages a principled and comprehensive development cycle to systematically capture the multimodal interaction artifact. Importantly, by introducing MVC architectural pattern, it enforces the concept of separation-of-concerns to enable cross collaboration among device engineers, programmers, modality designers and interaction designers who are collectively working on different aspects of human computer interaction and programming. Collectively, the development efforts are combined, integrated and compiled by the i *Chameleon kernel to derive the multimodal interactive application. the i*Chameleon platform sets itself apart from previous works in that it advocates the need to engineer a software development approach that leverages a MVC software architectural pattern to promote ease of software development through division of responsibilities among engineers and HCI designers. To validate the usefulness of i*Chameleon, we describe several application case examples to demonstrate the ease of developing multimodal applications through systematic integration of the design models as described above. Software birthmarks are unique and native characteristics of a binary executable program that can be used for detecting software piracy. API (Application Programming Interface) calls in an MS Windows binary executable can be used as software birthmarks when there are no source codes available to detect software similarity. However, it is inefficient to extract birthmarks from all API calls during the execution of a binary executable. In this paper, we propose an efficient scheme for comparing software similarity. To reduce the number of comparisons used in the proposed scheme, we extract only the core API calls that are explicitly used in different programs. the birthmarks used for comparing the similarity between two programs can be obtained by extracting these core API calls. Our experimental results show that this proposed birthmark scheme using core API calls is efficient for evaluating software similarity. Copyright 2013 acm.

Current research on the task of automatic music genre classification has been focusing on new classification approaches based on combining information from other sources than the music signal. the reason for this is that the use of content-based approaches, i.e. using features extracted directly from the audio signal, seems to have reached a glass ceiling. In this work we show that by using different types of content-based features together it is possible to substantially improve the classification accuracy. this is an interesting result as different types of content-based features aim, at a conceptual level, to capture the same type of information. In order to identify which types of content-based features are responsible for the predictive accuracy gain, we also used a feature selection (FS) approach based on a genetic algorithm (GA). the analysis of the results in two databases shows that the use of the GA for FS succeeds in selecting a representative subset without significant loss in accuracy. It also shows that all the different types of content-based features employed are important for the improvement of the accuracy in classifying music genres. © 2010 acm.

Pervasive computing devices (e.g., sensor networks, localization devices, cameras, etc.) are increasingly present in every aspect of our lives. these devices are able to generate enormous amounts of data, from which knowledge about situations and facts occurring in the world can be inferred;inference can also be done by combining data items and generating new (higher-level) ones. Such data and knowledge is of extreme importance for to context-aware and mobile services. However, we are left with the problem that the possibly huge amount of data and knowledge generated can be very hard to be analyzed and made usable in real-time. the core of the problem in today's pervasive environments lies between the ability to extract meaningful (useful) knowledge from the data while making sure the total amount of data does not become overwhelming to the system. this paper focus on this trade-off using (without loss of generality) the W4 model for contextual data as a case study. Starting from the basic mechanism by which the W4 model autonomously generate new knowledge, the paper shows how this can generate knowledge overflow, and propose a method to select - -in a self-organizing way - -what kinds of knowledge should be generated based on their importance;hence preventing knowledge overflow. Biological literature databases continue to grow rapidly with vital information that is important for conducting sound biomedical research. As data and information space continue to grow exponentially, the need for rapidly surveying the published literature, synthesizing, and discovering the embedded "knowledge" is becoming critical to allow the researchers to conduct "informed" work, avoid repetition, and generate new hypotheses. Knowledge, in this case, is defined as one-to-many and many-to-many relationships among biological entities such as gene, protein, drug, disease, etc. the knowledge discovery process basically involves identification of biological object names, reference resolution, ontology and synonym discovery, and finally extracting object-object relationships. the overall goal of this work is to investigate and develop a complete knowledge base, called BioMap, using the entire MEDLINE collection of (over 12 million) bibliographic citations and author abstracts from over 4600 biomedical journals worldwide and to develop an interactive knowledge network for users to access this secondary knowledge (BioMap) along with its primary databases such as the MEDLINE. In this paper we present the organization of a distributed database system to maintain the knowledge base of BioMap and some preliminary results on biological object name identification problem based on an initial set of 30,000 MEDLINE abstracts.

Visualization techniques of all sorts suffer from visual cluttering, the occlusion of visual information due to the overlap of graphical items;and from excessive complexity in analytical tasks due to multiple parallel perspectives. To cope with these problems, we introduce Hierarchical Visual Filtering, a novel interaction principle based on pragmatic and epistemic actions. Pragmatic actions here mean that the analyst is able to visually select and filter information, determining visual configurations that reveal different perspectives;epistemic actions mean that the analyst can record, annotate, and recall intermediate visualizations created pragmatically. To do so, we use a tree-like organization to keep multiple visualization workspaces linked according to the analytical decisions took by the user. Our goal is to promote an innovative systematization that can augment the potential for database visual inspection, and for visualization systems in general. It is our contention that Hierarchical Visual Filtering can inspire a novel scheme of visualization environments in which space limitations and complexity are treated by means of interactive tasks. Intellectual constructs and tools that are widely used to solve the problems of society have been woven into educational programs. For example, the three R's (reading, riting & rithmetic) are core to a strong fundamental education, and practitioners and researchers routinely apply these tools to their daily work. computing has become an essential and pervasive problemsolving toolset. this development has fostered much discussion about the role of computing in a modern education, the broadening nature of computing majors and concentrations and their place in post-secondary institutions, for example, [6,7]. Computer science educators recognize the importance of improving information technology (IT) skills and fluency, and a number of studies have developed guidelines on how to do this [3,4]. However, computer science has analytical concepts and tools that offer educational benefits beyond simple IT fluency. Computational thinking was introduced [9] as a continuation of earlier discussions on the nature of computing (e.g. [5]). Similar discussions and the same terminology were introduced independently in a series of workshops and reports [2]. this has helped the computing community to strengthen description and definition of the problem solving skills that computing brings to society, through education, outreach, and research. Over the past few years, computational thinking concepts have served as a basis for several projects, workshops and efforts aimed at more precise, and at the same time, deeper and wider interpretation of computing. this includes attention to K-12 curricula, general education at colleges and universities, as well as interdisciplinary research and technology transfer. this panel will outline a sampling of the activities and projects that have begun to define and address computational thinking. the moderator will start with an outline of national computational thinking activities and developments. the panelists will talk about their individual proje
