Not only should InformationTechnology (IT) Educators be knowledgeable regarding data privacy legislation but they should be teaching correct system and database design principles to IT students in order to ensure future application design compliance with international legislative trends. Perhaps the most contentious and serious issue facing IT practitioners in the world today is data privacy. data privacy impacts every aspect of IT from database and application design to privacy and use policies, and system security and information assurance. the European Union Directive legislation has aggressively set the pattern of excellence in preserving individual data privacy worldwide, and Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Document Act exerts an influence on U.S. commerce Within the U.S. laws such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act seek to protect information privacy in specific industries.

Developing a collaborative application running on a collection of heterogeneous, possibly mobile, devices, each potentially hosting data stores, using existing middleware technologies such as JXTA, BREW, *** and J2ME requires too many ad-hoc techniques as well as cumbersome and time-consuming programming. Our System on Mobile Devices (SyD) middleware, on the other hand, has a modular architecture that makes such application development very systematic and streamlined. the architecture supports transactions over mobile data stores, with a range of remote group invocation options and embedded interdependencies among such data store objects. the architecture further provides a persistent uniform object view, group transaction with Quality of Service (QoS) specifications, and XML vocabulary for interdevice communication. this paper presents the basic SyD concepts and introduces the architecture and the design of the SyD middleware and its components. We also provide guidelines for SyD application development and deployment process. We include the basic performance figures of SyD components and a few SyD applications on Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) platforms. We believe that SyD is the first comprehensive working prototype of its kind, with a small code footprint of 112 KB with 76 KB being device-resident, and has a good potential for incorporating many ideas for performance extensions, scalability, QoS, workflows and security. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2004.

While the wireless communications are coming to offices and houses, the special needs for secure data transmission, are proved an issue of great importance. the increased number of networks subscribers, in addition to the maximized quantity of the transmitted information, has triggered the revolution of the high speed, in the transmission channel. security in data transmission is a crucial demand, which has to be faced successfully. It is obvious that the implementation performance of security schemes is also important as the offered security level itself. In this work, the implementation cost and the performance evaluation of RC5 implementations is presented. this cipher is adopted by a great number of wireless protocols, such as WAP. the FPGA implementation synthesis results for a scalable architecture are shown, for a scalable proposed architecture. Alternative adders and subtracters designs are examined for the system architecture, in order high performance and low area resources to be achieved.

As a result of growing interest in telemedicine during the last decade, we have seen the development and deployment of several video conferencing telemedicine applications during recent years. Deployment of these applications was on ISDN lines or dedicated circuits since the bandwidth, security, and privacy have been the biggest concern in telemedicine. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signaling standard that attracts telemedicine application developers since SIP was designed for multimedia communications over IP-based networks and has inherent native mode security mechanisms built in. We have developed a SIP based video conferencing application that runs over the Internet and can provide authentication using MD5 Digest hashing mechanism. this client is designed to provide voice and video services using SIP, currently being standardized by MW. the client is also integrated with directory service designed on commObject architecture. the video conferencing client performance and interoperability has been successfully tested. We are now working on deploying it in a telemedicine environment In a telemedicine setting we will gather data from users in order to evaluate user satisfaction for both physicians and patients. there are additional features we have identified that can enhance the patient-physician communication and they will be obtained easily from our client in the future.

Safeguarding security for eGovernment services is an essential ingredient for the success of such services. For this purpose, isolated security efforts are not sufficient. Integrated concepts are required. In the publicly funded project SKe, we are developing such an integrated approach. One component of this integrated approach is a CBR-based experience management solution to support the dynamic aspects of IT security. the component-an intelligent IT security console-supports the daily work of the IT security personnel and supports them in systematically recording and using experiences in the form of weakly structured cases in their work process. the component is being developed in cooperation with an application partner. the approach is also used in projects with industrial partners.

Current research on data hiding is more and more demonstrating that many applications can benefit from these technologies: among these, medical data management. Current medical record formats store in separated fields image data, and the textual information, so that the link between image and patient occasionally could get mangled by protocol converters or tampering attacks. Moreover, if an intruder can access to the database, he is able to modify the attached text. Embedding patient's information directly into the image through data hiding technology can represent an useful safety measure. data hiding technologies suitable for such an application must satisfy specific requirements, the most important are: a high payload reliably identifying a patient;the preservation of the quality of the host medical image, the robustness to content modification. According to this analysis, a comparison between different data hiding approaches will be presented, to evaluate the most suitable algorithms for medical applications. In particular two different kind of algorithms will be taken into account: one algorithm based on Bayes theory will be compared with algorithms following the new approach of modelling data hiding as communication with side-information at the transmitter. these methods will be tested and compared in the framework of medical data management in order to identify benefits and drawbacks of both the different approaches for such an application

MPEG-4 is an international object-based standard that provides technological basis for digital television, interactive graphics and multimedia applications. these objects can be natural or synthetic e.g. textures, 3D objects,videos or sounds. In this paper we suggest an integrity approach to protect the content of MPEG-4 data. the essential part of this approach is to embed a robust watermark into each visual, audio and 3D object. the content fragile watermark verifying the integrity of a scene is the sum of all information retrieved from the robust watermarks extracted from the objects of the scene. the information of the fragile watermark will be distributed redundantly to all robust watermarks of the scene. Another essential part of our approach is to embed a part of the scene description or object descriptors as a watermark message into the video or audio streams. the amount of embedded information depends on the payload of the watermarking algorithms. We also analyze the possibility of embedding equivalent information into 3D models, depending on the application.
