Widely spread data over the World Wide Web is becoming an important resource that can be used in a variety of applications. In this paper, we propose an event notification and intelligent inference system based on information gathered from the profiles of registered users over the Web. Our model uses parallel workers to fetch and incrementally update the changing user data through the Web. the raw data is transformed in a canonical manner for correlations to generate notifications to a user about important events in the life of related people. We make use of asynchronous distributed task queuing, which uses an open source message-oriented middleware as a broker for message passing between our application server and the multiple background workers. this helps achieve a high degree of parallelism and scalability. A value added by this model is the higher quality of user experience provided by timely notifications. the model would also benefit suppliers catering to users' needs for various life events by promoting e-commerce and soon m-commerce. A different set of parallel workers could be conceived to capture the data about suppliers and their offers to carry out matching.

this paper addresses the issue of error detection in transactional memory, and proposes a new method of error detection based on redundant transaction (EDRT). this method creates a transaction copy for every transaction, and executes both original transactions and transaction copies on adequate processor cores, and achieves error detection by comparing the execution results. EDRT utilizes the data-versioning mechanism of transactional memory to achieve the acquisition of an approximate minimum error detection comparing data set, and the acquisition is transparent and online. At last, this paper validates the EDRT through 5 test programs, including 4 SPLASH-2 benchmarks. the experimental results show that, the average error detecting cost is about 3.68% relative to the whole program, and it's only about 12.07% relative to the transaction parts of the program. © 2011 ieee.

the availability of low cost high performance hardware such as graphical processing units (GPUs) has been the driving force for considerable change in both traditional high performance computing (HPC), and more recently the data centre. Vendor independent methods of accessing such hardware include the recently standardised OpenCL framework. However, using GPUs as accelerators for certain computational algorithms requires careful provisioning of infrastructure in order to balance cost, power consumption, and device utilization. In this paper we describe vOpenCL, an architecture for provisioning OpenCL capable hardware. vOpenCL works by transparently offloading processing from traditional cluster nodes, to a remotely located farm of OpenCL capable processors such as GPUs. vOpenCL differs from existing provisioning solutions since it provides mechanisms to optimize the data transfers between components. this is achieved through the use of a module/plug in which fully exploits the Infiniband interconnect architecture. We provide full analysis of vOpenCL and all of its plugins, in a range of scenarios including from within virtualized environments. For certain algorithms, we demonstrate that the Infiniband plug in can provide significant performance benefits. © 2011 ieee.

We present the use of commodity depth based cameras to control viewpoint from passive unencumbered head tracking. this allowed participants to maintain correct perspective while playing an immersive computer ball game, without the need to wear devices, wires or markers. While viewpoint update is more generally useful than stereoscopy it has traditionally used tracking equipment of expense and complexity unsuitable for home use. the current explosion of depth based cameras into the home game market could provide a cheaper, simpler and more elegant solution. While updating viewpoint from a depth camera has been demonstrated it has not previously been studied in a multi-player or fast moving game or undergone accurate measures of latency, task performance or user experience. We integrated low cost commodity hardware including depth based cameras, computers, projectors and stereo glasses, computer games software, a laptop and large projection surfaces. System latency and user performance and experience were measured across a number of viewpoint conditions. System latency of the viewpoint and hand tracking were measured by analysing high speed video footage. the number of goals scored and saved gave a measure of task performance. Subjective impressions of experience were taken from questionnaire and post interview. © 2011 ieee.

In the recent years virtually all processor architectures employ multiple cores per chip (CMPs). It is possible to use legacy (i.e., single-core) power saving techniques in CMPs which run either sequential applications or independent multithreaded workloads. However, new challenges arise when running parallel shared-memory applications. In the later case, sacrificing some performance in a single core (thread) in order to be more energy-efficient might unintentionally delay the rest of cores (threads) due to synchronization points (locks/barriers), therefore, harming the performance of the whole application. CMPs increasingly face thermal and power-related problems during their typical use. Such problems can be solved by setting a power budget to the processor/core. this paper initially studies the behavior of different techniques to match a predefined power budget in a CMP processor. While legacy techniques properly work for thread independent/multi-programmed workloads, parallel workloads exhibit the problem of independently adapting the power of each core in a thread dependent scenario. In order to solve this problem we propose a novel mechanism, Power Token Balancing (PTB), aimed at accurately matching an external power constraint by balancing the power consumed among the different cores using a power token-based approach while optimizing the energy efficiency. We can use power (seen as tokens or coupons) from non-critical threads for the benefit of critical threads. PTB runs transparent for thread independent / multiprogrammed workloads and can be also used as a spin lock detector based on power patterns. Results show that PTB matches more accurately a predefined power budget (total energy consumed over the budget is reduced to 8% for a 16-core CMP) than DVFS with only a 3% energy increase. Finally, we can trade accuracy on matching the power budget for energy-efficiency reducing the energy a 4% with a 20% of accuracy. © 2011 ieee.

Groundwater is like dark matter - we know very little apart from the fact that it is hugely important. Given the scarcity of data, mathematical modelling can come to the rescue but existing groundwater models are mainly restricted to simulate the transport and degradation of contaminants on the scale of whole contaminated field sites by averaging out the effect of spatial heterogeneity on the availability of the pollutant to the degrading organisms. these coarse-scale mean-field models therefore tend to rely on fitting to data rather than being predictive. Also, they are less suited to incorporate spatial variability and non-linear kinetics and feedbacks. We propose to solve the two mutually exacerbating problems of environmental patchiness and data scarcity by developing a flexible and robust distributed simulation framework that uses an ensemble of small scale simulations running on different processors/computers to scale-up, i.e. to feed the effect of small-scale patchiness into a concurrent site-scale simulation of the dynamics of groundwater pollutant degradation. Our scaling approach solves problem #1 by simulating dynamics also on the small scale where some of the patchiness resides, and problem #2 by enabling rigorous validation of our small-scale model and scaling approach with laboratory data, which are high quality at low cost. © 2011 ieee.

Cloud MapReduce (CMR) is a framework for processing large data sets of batch data in cloud. the Map and Reduce phases run sequentially, one after another. this leads to: 1. Compulsory batch processing 2. No parallelization of the map and reduce phases 3. Increased delays. the current implementation is not suited for processing streaming data. We propose a novel architecture to support streaming data as input using pipelining between the Map and Reduce phases in CMR, ensuring that the output of the Map phase is made available to the Reduce phase as soon as it is produced. this 'Pipelined MapReduce' approach leads to increased parallelism between the Map and Reduce phases;thereby 1. Supporting streaming data as input 2. Reducing delays 3. Enabling the user to take ' snapshots' of the approximate output generated in a stipulated time frame. 4. Supporting cascaded MapReduce jobs. this cloud implementation is light-weight and inherently scalable.

In addition to trade-offs between convergence and response spans as described by Gouda and Evangelist [1], we consider state space utilization with regard to processing and communications, and sensitivity to delay time estimates. In order to be delay insensitive, estimates of transmission and/or computation time are used, which we implement as virtual nodes. the estimated number of nodes is defined as NE. We define M as the number of processes, and N as the total number of nodes required in the problem space. these algorithms require that NE > N in order that correctness and desired behavior can be guaranteed. We define auto-synchronization as the characteristic of a system such that performance is related to N, rather than NE, even though state space necessarily is related to NE. Although our examples are delay insensitive deterministic unidirectional token rings, we believe that these concepts apply to many other paradigms of self-stabilization. © 2011 ieee.

We present our recently experimental results on a DFB laser diode pumped Rubidium atomic frequency standard. Our experiment was based on a homemade lamp-pumped Rubidium frequency standard with the discharge lamp assembly removed. In the experiment, we first locked a DFB laser diode to the Rb-87 cycling transition (5S(1/2), F=2 -> 5P(3/2), F=3) by means of saturation absorption locking technique. After that, we optimized the parameters carefully related to the clock performance, such as temperature of the physical package, amplitude of the modulation signal for the laser locking. the preliminary short-term stability of our clock is measured 5.25x10(-12)tau(-1/2) (1s
