A new distributed on-line test mechanism for NoCs is proposed which scales to large-scale networks with general topologies and routing algorithms. Each router and its links are tested using neighbors in different phases. Only the router under test is in test mode and all other parts of the NoC are in functional mode. Experimental results show that our on-line test approach can detect stuck-at and short-wire faults in the routers and links. Our approach achieves 100% fault coverage for the data-path and 85% for the control paths including routing logic, FIFO's control path and the arbiter of a 5x5 router. Synthesis results show that the hardware overhead of our test components with TMR (Triple Module Redundancy) support is 20% for covering both stuck-at and short-wire faults and 7% for covering only stuck-at faults in the 5x5 router. Simulation results show that our on-line testing approach has an average latency overhead of 20% and 3% in synthetic traffic and PARSEC traffic benchmarks on an 8x8 NoC, respectively. © 2011 ACM.

We report on an experimental exploration of ex vivo measurements and real-time monitoring of the motions of heart wall for perfused rat hearts, by employing a surface-contact type of electromechanical probes based on piezoelectric transduction. In a hybrid experimental apparatus consisting of a conventional heart perfusion system and external electromechanical probing devices and circuitry, prototyped piezoelectric cantilever devices are calibrated and tested. We demonstrate that the external piezoelectric cantilevers are capable of monitoring the dynamic behavior of the isolated heart ex vivo, by measuring the motions of the heart wall. For typical rat hearts with heart rates in the range of similar to 150-250bpm (beats per minute), cantilevers with dimensions of t x w x L approximate to 130 mu m x (0.3-8) mm x (1-19) mm yield electrical signal of similar to 50-400mV. Measured data can also help identify signatures of various regimes (e.g., from healthy to fatigued, to expiring) in the dynamical evolution during the perfused heart's lifetime. Preliminary tests on parallel multi-channel monitoring with probes positioned at multiple locations on heart surface prove to be valid and useful in obtaining information of regional displacement of heart wall.

We introduce a novel abstraction, the target container (TC), which serves as a parallel programming model and execution framework for developing complex applications for tracking multiple targets in a large-scale camera network. the key insight is to allow the domain expert (e.g., a vision researcher) to focus on the algorithmic details of target tracking and let the system deal with providing the computational resources (cameras, networking, and processing) to enable target tracking. Each TC has a one-to-one correspondence with a target, possibly tracked from multiple cameras. the domain expert provides the code modules for target tracking (such as detectors and trackers) as handlers to the TC system. the handlers are invoked dynamically by the TC system to discover new targets (detector) and to follow existing targets (tracker). the TC system also provides an interface for merging TCs whenever they are determined to be corresponding to the same target. this paper presents the design of the TC system, details of an experimental prototype, and an example application to demonstrate the simplicity of using the TC programming model.

A feature of standard video-mediated Communication systems (VMC) is that participants see into each other's spaces from the viewpoint of a camera. Consequently, participants' capacity to use the spatially-based resources that exist in co-located settings (eg the production and comprehension of pointing and eye gaze direction) can be compromised. Whilst positioning cameras close to displays, or switching or interpolating between multiple cameras to provide appropriately aligned views can reduce this problem, an alternative paradigm is the use of immersive projection technology to locate participants within an immersive collaborative virtual environment (ICVE), in which remote participants appear as 3D graphical representations. Two approaches toward representation of remote participants in ICVEs have been studied: embodied avatars animated using participants' tracked body motion, and vision-based techniques that reconstruct 3D models from multiple streams of live video input. Drawing on empirical evaluations of an avatar-based ICVE system that both captures and displays eye-movement, together with an examination of previous research into gaze, we provide a specification of gaze practices and the cues used in the perception of gaze that should be supported in ICVEs. We delineate some of the challenges for vision-based ICVE and discuss the potential for combining different approaches in the development of such systems. © 2011 ieee.

In recent years, as the rapid development of the technology about Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks and the cloud computing technology, various applications of P2P technology become very widespread in most cloud computing distributed network applications. P2P cloud computing networks are unstructured and are an important component to implement next generation internet. How to quickly and efficiently search the resources in P2P networks has become one of the most critical issues, and it is one of the greatest concerns to users. this paper* first describes the basic flooding P2P network search method, which is from the analyzing the pros and cons of several new search methods. After that, a cache-based search algorithm is proposed: When a node of the remaining load capacity is high, it will become the center node and form a joint topology area with the nearby nodes together, then the center node and ordinary nodes also need to store the index cache. At the local region the overheating resources will be copied to the local (that is, the contents cache). the simulation results show that the algorithm can effectively improve the hit rates of resources searching, and reduce the query delay in cloud computing networks. © 2011 ieee.

Today's largest supercomputers have over two hundred thousand CPU cores and even larger systems are under development. Typically, these systems are programmed using message passing. Over the past decade, there has been considerable interest in developing simpler and more expressive programming models for them. Partitioned global address space (PGAS) languages are viewed as perhaps the most promising alternative. In this paper, we report on our experience developing a set of PGAS extensions to Fortran that we call Co array Fortran 2.0 (CAF 2.0). Our design for CAF 2.0 goes well beyond the original 1998 design of Co array Fortran (CAF) by Numrich and Reid. CAF 2.0 includes language support for many features including teams, collective communication, asynchronous communication, function shipping, and synchronization. We describe the implementation of these features and our experiences using them to implement the High Performance Computing Challenge (HPCC) benchmarks, including High Performance Linpack (HPL), Random Access, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), and STREAM triad. On 4096 CPU cores of a Cray XT with 2.3 GHz single socket quad-core Opteron processors, we achieved 18.3 TFLOP/s with HPL, 2.01 GUP/s with Random Access, 125 GFLOP/s with FFT, and a bandwidth of 8.73 TByte/s with STREAM triad. we call Co array Fortran 2.0 (CAF 2.0). Our design for CAF 2.0 goes well beyond the original 1998 design of Coarray Fortran (CAF) by Numrich and Reid. CAF 2.0 includes language support for many features including teams, collective communication, asynchronous communication, function shipping, and synchronization. Solving a system of nonlinear equations is a common operation in many practical applications such as analyzing physics experiments or running simulations of analog electronic circuits. Applications become more and more complex, both in terms of variables and number of involved equations, severely limiting the applicability of the sequential algorithms. As both the processing power and the available bandwidth in modern network increase, the distributing solution becomes more and more appealing. this paper presents a parallel algorithm for solving systems nonlinear of equations based on the Newton-Raphson method. the core of this algorithm is the Gaussian reduction. Our implementation attempts to minimize the overall amount of data to be transferred during both the Gauss pivoting operation and each Newton-Raphson iteration. © 2011 ieee.

the definition and simulation of processes using Work flow technology is becoming more and more popular. In that way, to standardize and simulate complex processes it is needed high expressive languages able to be automatically executed by computers. Currently, high expressive languages that can be used for simulation and definition of processes are based in Petri Nets technology. Nevertheless, Petri Nets are difficult to understand by processes experts with no computer science training or expertise and are more complex to be executed than other simpler approaches like finite automatons. In this paper an automata based mathematical tool with a high expressivity capacity is presented. this framework is easier to understand also by non computer science expert sand its automation is simple in order to allow to experts to define formal work flows that can be easily automated. © 2011 ieee.

three-Dimensional (3D) integration is a solution to the interconnect bottleneck in Two-Dimensional (2D) MultiProcessor System on Chip (MPSoC). 3D IC design improves performance and decreases power consumption by replacing long horizontal interconnects with shorter vertical ones. As the multicast communication is utilized commonly in various parallel applications, the performance can be significantly improved by supporting of multicast operations at the hardware level. In this paper, we propose a set of partitioning approaches each with a different level of efficiency. In addition, we present an advantageous method named Recursive Partitioning (RP) in which the network is recursively partitioned until all partitions contain comparable number of nodes. By this approach, the multicast traffic is distributed among several subsets and the network latency is considerably decreased. We also present Minimal Adaptive Routing (MAR) algorithm for the unicast and multicast traffic in 3D-mesh Networks-on-Chip (NoCs). the idea behind the MAR algorithm is utilizing the Hamiltonian path to provide a set of alternative paths. © 2011 ACM.

Emulating the real world is the next frontier in computer applications. However, a computing machine cannot accurately imitate reality in a decent amount of time or even apart of it single-handedly. the solution: parallelize computers to solve a specific problem. One such aspect of reality that can be replicated is light. Ray tracing is a rendering technique that accurately depicts light at the cost of time. However, simply parallelizing it is not enough to reduce its running time. there is also the issue of having multiple heterogeneous computers that would divide the task unevenly. thus, a load balancing technique must be performed to further increase efficiency and make ray tracing suitable for mainstream purposes. the goal of this project is to parallelize ray tracing and compare different implementations to efficiently distribute the load and render images in the smallest possible amount of time given in a network of machines. this project proposed an alternative load balancing technique, Reservoir, to address the issue of having heterogeneous computers within the network and minimizes the communication overhead implicitly imposed by parallel applications. © 2011 ieee.
