In this paper we present an approach to increase the fault tolerance in FlexRay networks by introducing backup nodes to replace defect ECUs (Electronic Control Units). In order to reduce the memory requirements of such backup nodes, we distribute redundant tasks over different nodes and propose the distributed coordinated migration of tasks of the defect ECU to the backup node at runtime. this approach enhances our former work in [1], where we extended the FlexRay bus schedule by redundant slots to consider changes in the communication/slot assignment and investigated and evaluated different solutions to migrate the redundant tasks to the backup node using the static and/or dynamic segment of the communication cycle for transmissions. We present the approach of distributed coordination for migration and communication instead of additional dedicated coordinator nodes to further increase the fault tolerance. With this approach we improve the safety of FlexRay networks by avoiding a possible single point of failure due to a dedicated coordinator node also minimizing the necessary time needed for a reconfiguration after an ECU failure. Furthermore, we reduce the overhead within the communication and the demand for additional hardware components. © 2010 ieee.

the vast quantity of data contributed and consumed via the Internet provides an environment where Collective Intelligence (CI) can emerge. this article considers CI in relation to the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) paradigm, an environment that has the necessary conditions for the generation of large data sets through frequent peer interactions. We then examine the characteristics of agency and relate agent computing to the conditions required to facilitate CI in P2P systems. Furthermore, we present a key research challenge for the community and propose an approach to scrutinise CI in a P2P scenario that makes use of local primitive behaviours to infer the likely collective emergent behaviours for a particular system. © 2010 ieee.

the autonomic management of large-scale distributed systems now allows performance improvement, availability, and security, while simultaneously reducing the effort and skills required of system administrators. One way that systems can support these abilities is by relying on a continuous monitoring service to keep track of the states of the targeted systems. However, it is challenging to achieve both scalability and high accuracy when dealing with huge amounts of distributed and time-varying metrics in large-scale production systems. Additionally, most of the monitoring services are designed to provide general resource information and do not consider specific information for higher-level services, lacking important control capabilities. In this context, a dynamic adaptation layer is required, to be able to reactive and proactive deal with detected or predicted conditions. In this paper, we present a prediction architecture developed within the MonALISA monitoring framework, providing methods for estimating future values for different parameters on various periods of time. the predictions are used to enhance the self-adaptive behavior of applications and to minimize continuous monitoring costs. We illustrate our work as an efficient strategy to save power in wireless sensor networks by reducing the data traffic and thus maximizing the network lifetime. © 2010 ieee.

OpenMP is a widely used parallel programming model on traditional multi-core processors. Generally, OpenMP is used to develop fine-grained parallelism through a multithread model. Stream programming model is a new kind of parallel programming model for stream architectures. OpenMP bears a resemblance to the stream programming model at some level. the transformation between the two models has attracted much attention from the research community, since it is the foundation of porting programs between the two architectures. Most related researches focus on the efficiency of porting existing parallel programs to the new architectures such as GPUs. Very few of these studies, however, focus on the portative problem systematically, namely, what kind of parallel programs can be or should be transplanted into stream programs and mapped to run on the stream processors. In this paper, we study the mapping relationship of parallel mechanism in OpenMP to the stream programming model, and point out those parallel mechanisms in OpenMP that are infeasible or undesirable for stream programs. By analyzing two typical benchmarks, we draw the conclusion that a majority of scientific applications are suitable to be mapped to the stream programming model. Our conclusion effectively validates the idea of accelerating scientific applications with the stream processors. ©2010 ieee.

Applications can be submitted as jobs in grid. Grid jobs usually comprise the scenarios of file stage-in, execution and file stage-out. these scenarios always run in batch mode. It leads to the waiting of the computational resource for data transfer and limits the performance of the grid application, especially when the application is data/communication intensive. Utilizing the file sharing function of distributed file system, the scenarios of grid job can be processed in parallel, while the waiting of computational resource can be eliminated. thus, the execution performance of the grid job is promoted. After the comparison of different kinds of distributed file systems, this paper proposes CIFS-based mode for the data exchange in grid job, and testifies the promotion of the performance under this mode. In the test of a series of data/communication intensive jobs, the CIFS-based mode performs better performance than GridFTP. © 2010 ieee.

Geographically distributed computational infrastructures, based on the grid paradigm, are increasingly coming out of the research sphere where they originated, candidating themselves as a low-effort business solution for accessing and using vaste computating infrastructures, much larger than those small-medium enterprises can usually afford building 'in house'. In such scenario, accounting and billing systems play a key role, as any business model cannot opt out of instruments showing how many resources have been used in a given period of time and by whom. For this reason, several accounting systems have been developed in the last years, for various grid middleware. Although each of them has its own features, they are generally targeted for large-size infrastructures, because of the comprehensive range of results available and the vast effort to implement and deploy them. However, sometimes different needs arise, especially for smaller sites participating to large distributed infrastructures. Gustav aims to fulfill some of these requirements in a simple and reliable way, and could be considered as an alternative approach to CPU accounting for grid sites. © 2010 ieee.

the success of content distribution oriented peer-to-peer systems heavily depends on the resource discovery mechanism. In case of large-scale distributed systems, this mechanism must be scalable and robust. the paper proposes a structured solution for resource discovery in decentralized peer-to-peer systems, which is guided by peer interest in collaborating with other peers. the problem of discovering peers of interest has many applications in file sharing, in data-aware scheduling, and in optimizing the files and documents downloads. Moreover, if trust is added as another parameter to define peers of interest, the interest-based discovery is useful in trusted P2P applications. We focused on developing the overlay network to ensure a very small number of messages required to retrieve, insert or delete a file even in the case of a very large network containing millions of nodes. In the experimental validation we used Over Sim, a simulation tool for P2P systems. the experimental results highlight the good performance obtained regarding message communication and system's scalability. © 2010 ieee.

In light of its powerful computing capacity and high energy efficiency, GPU (graphics processing unit) has become a focus in the research field of HPC (High Performance Computing). CPU-GPU heterogeneous parallel systems have become a new development trend of super-computer. However, the inherent unreliability of the GPU hardware deteriorates the reliability of super-computer. We have researched on the fault-tolerance(FT) technique for CPU-GPU heterogeneous parallel systems, and introduced a new checkpointing mechanism, i.e., the hierarchical application-level checkpointing, for such systems. the basic idea of this new checkpointing mechanism is checkpointing at two independent levels, i.e., CPU level and GPU level, to tolerate CPU and GPU faults respectively. Based on the idea, we have also designed and implemented a hierarchical application-level checkpointing tool "HiAL-Ckpt". Using this tool, programmers can insert two kinds of directives, i.e., CPU directives and GPU directives into a program, and the compiler will transform the directives into CPU or GPU checkpointing codes according to their nature. From the case study of SWIM, a test bench from spec2000 benchmark suite, we have demonstrated the validity of the hierarchical application-level checkpointing technique. the experimental results show that the falut-tolerance temporal cost of HiAL-Ckpt for SWIM is only 2.25%, compared with the executing time of SWIM without any FT work. ©2010 ieee.

this paper presents a Tabu search based approach for the topology synthesis of application-specific multicore architectures using an automated design technique. the Tabu search method incorporates multiple objectives in order to generate an optimal NoC topology which accounts for both power and performance factors. the method generates a system-level floorplan in each major stage of the topology synthesis. By incorporating the floorplan information, it is possible to attain accurate values for power consumption of the routers and physical links, as well as manage the interconnections within the system. the technique also includes a contention analyzer that assesses performance and omits any potential bottlenecks. the contention analyzer uses a Layered Queuing Network approach to model the rendezvous interactions amongst system components. Several experiments are conducted using various SoC benchmark applications to compare the power and performance outcomes of the proposed technique. © 2010 ieee.
