Cross-layer design for wireless networks aims at optimizing system-wide performance measures by exploiting dependencies between different network layers. In this paper, an opportunistic power assignment algorithms for IR-UWB sensor networks is presented that is especially designed for distributed signal detection under resource constraints. Specifically, the objective is to minimize the global probability of error of distributed detection systems, given a fixed level of total transmission power. the cross-layer approach for the allocation of transmission power is based on individual sensor detection quality as well as location information. It leads to significant performance gains compared to uniform power assignment for both the parallel and the serial sensor network topology.

Power consumption has become one of the most critical concerns for processor design. this motivates designing algorithms for minimum execution time subject to energy constraints. We propose simple models for analysing algorithms that reflect the energy-time trade-offs of CMOS circuits. Using these models, we derive lower bounds for the energy-constrained execution time of sorting, addition and multiplication, and we present algorithms that meet these bounds. We show that minimizing time under energy constraints is not the same as minimizing operation count or computation depth.

this paper presents an automated, online approach to anomaly detection in high-content screening assays for pharmaceutical research. Online detection of anomalies is attractive because it offers the possibility of immediate corrective action, early termination, and redesign of assays that may require many hours or days to execute. the proposed approach employs assay-specific image processing within an assay-independent framework for distributed control, machine learning, and anomaly reporting. Specifically, we exploit coarse-grained parallelism to distribute image processing over several computing nodes while efficiently aggregating sufficient statistics across nodes. this architecture also allows us to easily handle geographically-distributed data sources. Our results from two applications, adipocyte quantitation and neurite growth estimation, confirm that this online approach to anomaly detection is feasible, efficient, and accurate.

We show that the problem of finding an energy minimal schedule for execution of a collection of jobs on a multiprocessor with job migration allowed has polynomial complexity. Each job is specified by a release time, a deadline, and an amount of work to be performed. All of the processors have the same, convex power-speed trade-off of the form P = phi(s), where P is power, s is speed, and phi is convex. Unlike previous work on multiprocessor scheduling, we place no restriction on the release times, deadlines, or amount of work to be done. We show that the scheduling problem is convex, and give an algorithm based on linear programming. We show that the optimal schedule is the same for any convex power-speed trade-off function.

Traditional authorization mechanisms based on the request-response model are generally supported by point-to-point communication between applications and authorization servers. As distributed applications increase in size and complexity, an authorization architecture based on point-to-point communication becomes fragile and difficult to manage. this paper presents the use of the publish-subscribe (pub-sub) model for delivering authorization requests and responses between the applications and the authorization servers. Our analysis suggests that using the pub-sub architecture improves authorization system availability and reduces system administration overhead We evaluate our design using a prototype implementation, which confirms the improvement in availability. Although the response time is also increased, this impact can be reduced by bypassing the pub-sub channel when returning authorizations or by caching coupled with local inference of authorization decisions based on previously cached authorizations.

Although a growing number of devices have the support for parallel processing, parallelism is not widely exploited, as it should be. this can be illustrated by the fact that all Apple desktops and laptops are currently supplied with one or more dualcore processors. Despite this, parallel programming in popular languages such as Java is not widely encouraged and often only recommended as a last resort. In addition, it is likely that the next generation parallel applications will have to operate within a diverse range of heterogeneous devices ranging from supercomputers to sensors. this paper proposes a flexible component-based middleware that aims at facilitating the construction of deadlock free parallel and concurrent applications for heterogeneous environments. the middleware is particularly targeted to tailor applications to the target need and environment. For our prototyping, we implemented plugins that are capable of deploying JCSP (CSP library for Java programmers) and occam-pi processes. Both JCSP and occam-pi make use of the CSP disciplines. the CSP (Communicating Sequential Processes) paradigm helps us to avoid concurrency problems such as deadlocks. It should be stressed that there is no bias towards these languages as the proposed middleware is highly extensible.

Multicast communication has been a major avenue for many studies in interconnection networks. However, such a communication pattern has been studied under either limited operating conditions or within the context of deterministic routing algorithms. this paper investigates the impact of routing algorithms, both deterministic and adaptive routing on the multicast communication over interconnection network. In particular, we focus on the provision of efficient multicast communication algorithms in interconnection networks. Using detailed simulation experiments, different multicast algorithms have been compared for a range of system sizes, traffic loads, and destination nodes. For the case of multicast latency, our proposed algorithms exhibit the best performance when the traffic load is high and the start-up overhead does not dominates the propagation overhead. the results also highlight the impact of adaptive routing on both latency and throughput when designing efficient multicast algorithms. thus, these results demonstrate significant potential to be applied to current and future generation interconnection networks.

this paper introduces a novel method for accelerated dynamic image acquisition for cardiac MRI. this method combines two different formalisms for reconstruction from sparse data by incorporation of prior information. parallel imaging uses information about coil geometry in imaging systems with multiple receiver coils. Reduced field of view (rFOV) imaging exploits knowledge about static regions in a dynamic image scene. the novel method combines the SPACE-RIP implementation of parallel imaging with the Noquist rFOV imaging method, which both use a direct inversion model for image reconstruction. the theory is presented for integrated application of these methods, and results are presented of supporting experiments with simulated and real MRI data, retrospectively subsampled to generate sparse data sets. Successful application of the method confirms multiplicative combined acceleration. ©2008 ieee.

this paper proposes a novel Lightweight time Warp (LTW) protocol for high-performance parallel optimistic simulation of large-scale DEVS and Cell-DEVS models. By exploiting the characteristics of the simulation process. the protocol is able to set free most logical processes (LPs) from the Time Warp mechanism, while the overall simulation still executes optimistically, driven by only a few full-fledged Time Warp LPs. the LTW protocol includes a rule-based event-scheduling mechanism using two types of event queues, an aggregated state-saving technique for optimal risk-free state management, and a new rollback algorithm that recovers lightweight LPs from causality errors without sending anti-messages. the impact on global control mechanisms such as GVT Computation, fossil collection, and load migration is also discussed the basic concepts of the protocol could also apply to a broad range of Time Warp systems under certain conditions and with appropriate control over the LPs.

Dynamic load balancing is a key factor in achieving high performance for large scale distributed simulations on grid infrastructures. In a grid environment, the available resources and the simulation's computation and communication behavior may experience run-time critical imbalances. Consequently, an initial static partitioning should be combined with a dynamic load balancing scheme to ensure the high performance of the distributed simulation. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic load balancing scheme for distributed simulations on a grid infrastructure. Our scheme is composed of an online network analyzing service coupled with monitoring agents and a run-time model repartitioning service. We present a hierarchical scalable adaptive JXTA service based scheme and demonstrate through simulation experiments that our proposed scheme exhibits better performance in terms of the simulation execution time.
