Illumination variation that span globally and locally across the facial surface is one of the most important aspect in designing a robust face recognition system. the illumination variations due to changes in lighting conditions could produce different shape of shading on the face thus deforming the facial features. the effect of these variations is simply more severe in the presence of single-sample constraint since there would be many variables with very limited observations. Illumination variations have been modelled in literature as a series of undetermined multiplicative and additive noise, hence it is more convenient to eliminate or reduce the effect rather than computingthem. In this paper, we present an illumination-invariant method where we use local features as basis for face classification which is obtained from partitioning histogram-equalized faces into smaller overlapping local patches (LPs). We can achieve illumination-invariance for these LPs by subtracting the vectors with local average illumination and then these vectors are logarithmically normalized to enhance the local contrast. the degree of invariance is controlled by a weight connected to the average intensity component. We have tested this method in single sample face recognition setting on AR Database and Extended YALE B Database. Recognition results show that the proposed method is suitable for robust face recognition since it achieve good performance in both even illumination and uneven illumination cases.

Sophisticated numerical simulations represent an indispensable tool for developing new optical communication systems and solutions. With wider availability of parallel computing hardware (most notably, multi-core CPUs and GPUs) it becomes increasingly important to effectively parallelize simulation algorithms. In this paper, we review the main principles and common pitfalls of parallel simulations for optical systems and components. the addressed topics include signal propagation in fibers, fiber gratings, active and passive semiconductor components, parallel simulations of transmission systems and photonic integrated circuits represented by networks of modules, as well as general-purpose optimization tasks.

the shared computing and communication infrastructure, known as cloud computing, is supporting a growing number of companies to drive their core businesses. the Cloud term characterizes the end-users perspective: it offers services the users access as outsiders (which could be in the form of a computing and communication platform or infrastructure or an application) while being agnostic about the technology underlying it. the implementation details are abstracted away, and the service/computing is consumed as a pay-per-use service and not acquired as an asset. From the service-provider's perspective, a number of technologies can be deployed to deliver the end-user experience. When the provider is outside of the end user's organization, it is called the public cloud or just the cloud. the same underlying technology can be used to provide similar infrastructure / platforms / software within the organization, perhaps offered by a separate business unit or to take advantage of the benefits while maintaining control; in this case, the term private cloud is used. Separate clouds (separated by technology or management or geography) unified to appear as one are termed federated clouds. When the federated clouds are running different technologies, and in particular do not natively expose same APIs, a more specialized term is a heterogeneous federated cloud. When the clouds being federated are composed of both private and public clouds, the result is a hybrid cloud. Cloud offerings are often classified into three main -as-a-Service (-aaS) categories: Infrastructure-,Platform-, and Software-. Other categories are sometimes used to describe specific implementations of these categories Storage-aaS, Management-aaS, etc.

PESOS 2013 is a forum that brings together software engineering researchers from academia and industry, as well as practitioners working in the areas of service-oriented systems to discuss research challenges, recent developments, novel application scenarios, as well as methods, techniques, experiences, and tools to support engineering, evolution and adaptation of service-oriented systems. the special theme of the 5th edition of PESOS is "Service Engineering for the Cloud" the goal is to explore approaches to better engineer service-oriented systems, to either take advantage of the qualities offered by cloud infrastructures or to account for lack of full control over important quality attributes. PESOS 2013 also continues to be the key forum for collecting case studies and artifacts for educators and researchers in this area.

the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) has as its science instrument an infrared integral field spectrograph/polarimeter (IFS). Integral field spectrographs are scientificially powerful but require sophisticated data reduction systems. For GPI to achieve its scientific goals of exoplanet and disk characterization, IFS data must be reconstructed into high quality astrometrically and photometrically accurate datacubes in both spectral and polarization modes, via flexible software that is usable by the broad Gemini community. the data reduction pipeline developed by the GPI instrument team to meet these needs is now publicly available following GPI's commissioning. this paper, the first of a series, provides a broad overview of GPI data reduction, summarizes key steps, and presents the overall software framework and implementation. Subsequent papers describe in more detail the algorithms necessary for calibrating GPI data. the GPI data reduction pipeline is open source, available from planetimager. org, and will continue to be enhanced throughout the life of the instrument. It implements an extensive suite of task primitives that can be assembled into reduction recipes to produce calibrated datasets ready for scientific analysis. Angular, spectral, and polarimetric differential imaging are supported. Graphical tools automate the production and editing of recipes, an integrated calibration database manages reference files, and an interactive data viewer customized for high contrast imaging allows for exploration and manipulation of data.
