the paper challenges the current state-of-the-art which is accepted by the automotive industry. Present day vehicles are unsophisticatedly over-engineered and, as a consequence, are uneconomic, hence unsustainable. Vehicles currently under development, however, offer tremendous opportunities for shifting from this position to include onboard active safety systems, e.g. collision avoidance. It is argued that future vehicles should be significantly lighter and exploit the developing safety features to the full. Indeed, such a development would reduce the existing need for crashworthiness. the above arguments coupled with parallel developments in smart materials, paves the way towards a new generation of actively controlled vehicle architecture design. Whilst the move to lighter vehicles, with onboard active safety systems and actively controlled structures, may be seen as controversial, there is a convincing case for a paradigm shift towards a truly sustainable transport future.

this paper analyzes stochastic performance of a distributed global activity, composed of sub-activities sequenced serially, probabilistically, or concurrently. We provide general formulas with which we calculate the performance of a composite activity based on the performance of the constituent sub-activities and the control structure. To do this, we model each sub-activity as a Partially Ordered Specification (POS), where each sub-activity is characterized by independent input events, dependent output events and the stochastic minimum delays between these events. this technique allows two or more subactivities to be combined hierarchically. Proofs of correctness for these formulas are given and a simple example is discussed throughout the paper.

Ultra-high-resolution (Powerwall) displays offer a vast real estate for displaying data, but also present a new set of interaction issues. this workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners in the research area of Powerwall technologies. the workshop focuses on four key research questions: how do the interaction metaphors change as we move away from desktop interaction? How do we make the most of the visual resolution for data visualization? How can the physical size support collaborative work? And what are the lessons learnt from installing such displays?

this paper deals with modeling and performance analysis of distributed applications, service compositions and workflow systems. From the functional perspective, the distributed application is modeled as an activity involving several roles, where behavior is defined in terms of compositions from several sub-activities using the standard sequencing operators found in UML Activity Diagrams. Each activity is characterized by a certain number of input and output events, and the performance of the activity is defined by the minimum delays that apply for a given output event in respect to each input event. We use a partial order to model these events, whose delays can be measured through testing. We also provide general formulas to calculate the performance of a composite activity from the performance of its constituent sub-activities and the control structure specifying the order of execution. Proofs of correctness for these formulas, along with a simple example are also given.
