Effective transmission line insulator defect detection is crucial for maintaining power grid reliability and safety. Traditional methods, which often rely on ground-based inspections or cloud-based computing, can be slow and inefficient. this paper introduces EdgeIDD, a lightweight solution for real-time UAV-based insulator defect detection leveraging edge computing. By enabling on-site data processing, EdgeIDD reduces the reliance on high-bandwidth communication with central servers and addresses connectivity challenges in remote areas where most power transmission towers are constructed. Built upon YOLOv10, the latest state-of-the-art model with faster speed compared to precedent iterations by removing the post-processing step, EdgeIDD integrates minimalist design principles, replacing the complete backbone with lightweight vanilla blocks and incorporating our novel C2fP block and utilized distribution shifting convolution for accelerated feature fusion. Our model achieves a remarkable 45.2% reduction in total parameters compared to YOLOv10n while maintaining a high mean average precision (mAP) of 97.5% with minimal accuracy loss. With hardware acceleration, EdgeIDD reaches 23.3 FPS on a Raspberry Pi 5 with 7.3x speedup. this advancement in edge computing ensures rapid, reliable insulator defect detection directly from the UAV, even in areas with limited connectivity.

Distributed Energy Resource (DER) deployments continue to accelerate as the electric grid experiences the transformative shift to a decentralized renewable generation and distribution-based network. Photovoltaics (PV) systems in particular are an extremely attractive option for many residential and commercial owners towards electricity generation in densely populated urban areas. However, harsh environmental conditions can often accelerate the degradation of PV components which may lead to electrical issues, hazardous conditions for people and equipment, and decreases in their economic effectiveness. In this work, the failure modes and effects of PV modules are discussed as well as the inference of their effects on system reliability. Furthermore, a visual inspection and temperature analysis of a 315W solar PV module from a 8-year PV system deployed in the harsh subtropical environment of Miami, FL are performed. From these analyses, several insights on PV design are drawn at boththe module and system level, and recommendations for future PV installations are provided.

Leveraging Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), the study unfolds in two phases. In the first phase, UAVs are strategically deployed using DDPG to optimize network coverage in areas of higher user density. this intelligent deployment adapts to user distribution patterns. Some applications, like round-based consensus algorithms, require all the nodes from a system to send a message to the same node (the leader) at the same time. In a Mobile Ad-Hoc Network (MANET), this situation is likely to cause collisions and the loss of the messages converging to the leader. the loss of messages is critical in such a situation, since the leader needs to receive a quorum of messages to make a decision. this pattern of communications, called convergecast, can be trivially implemented with a unicast primitive. However, we show that a popular MANET unicast algorithm like Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) loses a lot of messages, even in the presence of MAC-level collision avoidance mechanisms like CSMA/CA. We propose a new convergecast algorithm that locally schedules answers to a query in a fully distributed manner, in order to avoid their colliding with each other, and that aggregates these answers in order to further decrease the probability of collisions. We show that our algorithm creates far fewer collisions and retries than OLSR, allowing applications like consensus algorithms to reach their quorum sooner.
