this workshop aims to further the understanding of the challenges relating to the evaluation methods of usability and user experience that are specific to Reality-Based Interaction (RBI), and to identify effective practical responses to these challenges. the emergence of Post-WIMP interfaces has led to new ways of interacting with technologies. However, there are still no integrated ways of evaluating the usability and user experience of these interfaces. Developers and designers are left to discover their own metrics and evaluation methods. this approach presents problems, in that the metrics used in each case may provide results that are neither valid nor meaningful. For this reason, the time is ripe to integrate the methods that have been developed for evaluating interfaces that belong to the RBI umbrella. the measures and techniques will then be turned into a framework that enables designers of RBI interfaces to select appropriately existing methods and tools to evaluate systematically the usability and user experience of their prototypes and products. Reusing and adapting validated evaluation approaches can not only avoid reinventing the wheel and wasting time but also further improve and consolidate these approaches. Such a framework will also provide a basis for comparison between designs of RBI interfaces in different application contexts.

Poker games provide a useful testbed for modern Artificial Intelligence techniques. Unlike many classical game domains such as chess and checkers, poker includes elements of imperfect information, stochastic events, and one or more adversarial agents to interact with. Furthermore, in poker it is possible to win or lose by varying degrees. therefore, it can be advantageous to adapt ones' strategy to exploit a weak opponent. A poker agent must address these challenges, acting in uncertain environments and exploiting other agents, in order to be highly successful. Arguably, poker games more closely resemble many real world problems than games with perfect information. In this brief paper, we outline Polaris, a Texas Hold'em poker program. Polaris recently defeated top human pro-fessionals at the Man vs. Machine Poker Championship and it is currently the reigning AAAI Computer Poker Competition winner in the limit equilibrium and no-limit events. One of the central challenges of the User Experience discipline has always been how early in the development cycle it can exert any degree of influence. the challenge that our field is facing today more pronounced than ever is how to influence the decision makers that give directions guiding individual product development. And vice versa, this early decision making process can benefit from user experience approaches that help ground its direction in user research, and inform its decisions creatively through concepts and design thinking - see for example the concept of Business Design (as taught by the Rotman school of management, with similar approaches being the foundation of successes such as design consultancies like IDEO). the goal of the panel will be to draw together a community of experts and interested audience members in this topic and initiate a discourse on its key issues and opportunities.

there is an ever increasing need for database replication in dynamic web sites to improve availability. However, the main problem in replication is load balancing. this paper presents new load balance technique to increase the performance of database replication in dynamic web depending on the type and weight of database server queue. We attempt at evaluation various load distribution policies, taking in account their ability to achieve good load balancing by using LMB (Load Balance Metric), and also their impact on performance by measuring the throughput. the telecommunication benchmark is used to compare the different policies of load balancing. the telecommunication benchmark, a powerful benchmarking tool, is used to test up to fifty database replicas that will play a great role in the evaluation process which could be performed through measurements on a web site that follows the TPC-W specifications. the results show that the Queue weighting Load Balancing has maximum LMB and best throughput.

Today's Information Society demands complete access to available information, which is often heterogeneous and distributed. A key challenge in building the Semantic Web is integrating heterogeneous data sources. this paper presents an incremental algorithm for maintaining integration in evolving ontologies. For example, an increased number of smaller, task oriented ontologies, are emerging across the Bioinformatics domain to represent domain knowledge;integrating these heterogeneous ontologies is crucial for applications utilizing multiple ontologies. Most ontologies share a core of common knowledge allowing them to communicate, but no single ontology contains complete domain knowledge. Recent papers examined integrating ontologies using bipartite graph matching techniques. However, they do not address the issue of incrementally maintaining the matching in evolving ontologics. In this paper we present an incremental algorithm, OntoMaintain, which incrementally calculates the perfect matching among evolving ontologies and simultaneously updates the labels of the concepts of ontologies. We show that our algorithm has a complexity of O(n(2)) compared to complexity O(n(3)) of traditional matching algorithms. Experimental results prove that our algorithm maintains the correctness of a 'brute force method' while significantly reducing the time needed to find a perfect matching in evolving ontologies.

In this paper we present a robust pedestrian detection algorithm in low resolution on-board monocular camera image sequences of cluttered scenes. At first a motion based object detection algorithm is developed to detect foreground objects by analyzing horizontal motion vector. A cascade structure of rejection type classifier is utilized for our pedestrian detection system. Initial stage of cascade, simple rule based classification techniques are used to separate pedestrian from obvious road side structural object and later part of the cascade, a more complex algorithm which is a combination of Histogram of Oriented Gradients(HOG) and Support Vector Machine(SVM) based classification techniques are utilized to separate pedestrian from non-pedestrian objects. Finally, the image segments are tracked by our Spatio-Temporal Markov Random Field model(S-T MRF). Results show that our algorithms are promising for pedestrian detection in cluttered scenes. © 2009 IEEE.

Extensive games can be used to model many scenarios in which multiple agents interact with an environment. there has been considerable recent research on finding strong strategies in very large, zero-sum extensive games. the standard approach in such work is to employ abstraction techniques to derive a more tractably sized game. An extensive game solver is then employed to compute an equilibrium in that abstract game, and the resulting strategy is presumed to be strong in the full game. Progress in this line of research has focused on solving larger abstract games, which more closely resemble the full game. However, there is an underlying assumption that by abstracting less, and solving a larger game, an agent will have a stronger strategy in the full game. In this work we show that this assumption is not true in general. Refining an abstraction can actually lead to a weaker strategy. We show examples of these abstraction pathologies in a small game of poker that can be analyzed exactly. these examples show that pathologies arise when abstracting both chance nodes as well as a player's actions. In summary, this paper shows that the standard approach to finding strong strategies for large extensive games rests on shaky ground. We present a discrete kernel density matching energy for segmenting the left ventricle cavity in cardiac magnetic resonance sequences. the energy and its graph cut optimization based on an original first-order approximation of the Bhattacharyya measure have not been proposed previously, and yield competitive results in nearly real-time. the algorithm seeks a region within each frame by optimization of two priors, one geometric (distance-based) and the other photometric, each measuring a distribution similarity between the region and a model learned from the first frame. Based on global rather than pixelwise information, the proposed algorithm does not require complex training and optimization with respect to geometric trans formations. Unlike related active contour methods, it does not compute iterative updates of computationally expensive kernel densities. Furthermore, the proposed first-order analysis can be used for other intractable energies and, therefore, can lead to segmentation algorithms which share the flexibility of active contours and computational advantages of graph Cuts. Quantitative evaluations over 2280 images acquired from 20 Subjects demonstrated that the results correlate well with independent Manual segmentations by an expert.
