the effect of brand on consumer attitudes towards real and virtual goods is largely documented in consumer psychology and marketing. there is an obvious link between the design of a website and its brand. Yet, this effect has attracted little attention from the HCI community. this paper presents empirical evidence showing that brand attitude influences the evaluation of websites. the effect was reliable across different measures: people holding better attitudes were more positive in the evaluation of aesthetics, pleasure and usability. A sample of students (N=145) with a background in HCI was tested, sugggesting that brand may influence the output of expert evaluators. the study provides support to the proposition of UX as a contextual-dependent response to the interaction withcomputingsystems and has important implications for the design and evaluation of websites which are discussed in the conclusion.

We investigate avenues for the exchange of information (explicit communication) among deaf and dumb mobile robots scattered in the plane. We introduce the use of movement-signals (analogously to flight signals and bees waggle) as a mean to transfer messages, enabling the use of distributed algorithms among robots. We propose one-to-one deterministic movement protocols that implement explicit communication among asynchronous robots. We first show how the movements of robots can provide implicit acknowledgment in asynchronous systems. We use this result to design one-to-one communication among a pair of robots. then, we propose two one-to-one communication protocols for any system of n >= 2 robots. the former works for robots equipped with observable IDs that agree on a common direction (sense of direction). the latter enables one-to-one communication assuming robots devoid of any observable IDs or sense of direction. All three protocols (for either two or any number of robots) assume that no robot remains inactive forever. However, they cannot avoid that the robots move either away or closer of each others, by the way requiring robots with an infinite visibility. In this paper, we also present how to overcome these two disadvantages. these protocols enable the use of distributing algorithms based on message exchanges among swarms of Stigmergic robots. they also allow robots to be equipped withthe means of communication to tolerate faults in their communication devices.

Anesthetic nerve blocks are a common therapy performed in hospitals around the world to alleviate acute and chronic pain. Tracking systems have shown considerable promise in other forms of therapy, but;little has been done to apply this technology in the field of anesthesia. We are developing a, guidance system for combining tracked needles with non-invasive ultrasound (US) and patient-specific geometric models. In experiments with phantoms two augmented reality (AR) guidance systems were compared to the exclusive rise of US for lumbar facet injection therapy. Anesthetists and anesthesia residents were able to place needles within 0.57mm of the intended targets using our AR systems compared to 5.77mm using US alone. A preliminary cadaver study demonstrated the system was able to accurately place radio opaque dye on targets. the combination of real time US with tracked tools and AR guidance has the potential to replace CT and fluoroscopic guidance, thus reducing radiation dose to patients and clinicians, as well as reducing health care costs.

We study the problem of computing a family of connected dominating sets in wireless sensor networks (WSN) in a distributed manner. A WSN is modelled as a unit disk graph G = (V, E) where V and E denote the sensors deployed in the plane and the links among them, respectively. A link between two sensors exists if their Euclidean distance is at most 1. We present a distributed algorithm that computes a family S of S-1, S-2, ..., S-m non-trivial connected dominating sets (CDS) withthe goal to maximize alpha = m/k where k=max(u is an element of V)vertical bar{i : u is an element of S-i}vertical bar. In other words, we wish to find as many CDSs as possible while minimizing the number of frequencies of each node in these sets. Since CDSs play all important role for maximizing network lifetime when they are used as backbones for broadcasting messages, maximizing a reduces the possibility of repeatedly using the same subset of nodes as backbones. We provide an upper bound on the value of a, via a nice relationship between all minimum vertex-cuts and CDSs in G and present a distributed (localized) algorithm for the a maximization problem. For a subclass of unit disk graphs, we show that our algorithm achieves a constant approxmation factor of the optimal solution.

In this paper we present improved signal processing techniques which can be used to reduce the discrete as well as spatially spread clutter in radar systemsthrough space-time processing. Several techniques are proposed for clutter reduction, most of them model the clutter statistically. the proposed clutter reduction technique models the clutter using parametric modeling. the clutter contained in the measurements is treated as an ARMA model. the advantage of such approach lies therein that once the clutter is satisfactorily known, any target will show up against the known strong clutter background.
