In this paper, we address the problem of effective management of parallel I/O in multiprogrammed cluster computingsystems by using appropriate I/O scheduling strategies. the performance of I/O devices lags behind the performance of processors and network systems, resulting in I/O becoming the bottleneck in current systems. this gap is expected to increase in the future since I/O performance is limited by physical motion. therefore, it is imperative that novel techniques for improving I/O performance be developed. Parallel I/O is a promising approach to alleviating this bottleneck. However, very little work exists with respect to scheduling parallel I/O operations explicitly. We propose new I/O scheduling algorithms and evaluate the relative performance of the proposed policies against the most commonly used approaches. Our preliminary results show that the proposed policies outperform current methods and can substantially enhance the performance of real-world scientific applications.

Lake Winnipeg is Canada's 6th largest freshwater lake and is subject to an increasing rate of eutrophication as a result of nonpoint source pollution from numerous sources including farms and municipal wastewaters. We examine scenarios designed to compare the relative effects of wetland restoration and position on modelled nutrient loadings to Lake Winnipeg from a pilot watershed in the Lake's Basin, the La Salle River watershed. Scenarios were examined using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). SWAT is a well-known watershed scale hydrologic model designed to assess non-point source pollution loadings to contributing streams across a wide range of scales. Modelled results suggested that increasing wetland cover to historic levels (6.1%) in their original locations decreased yearly nutrient loadings by 9-21% for both TN and TP. When the same level of wetland cover was restored at subwatershed outlets, equivalent or better nutrient reductions were attained. But placing all (6.1%) wetland area at the watershed outlet did not result in as substantial nutrient reductions. there was a larger range of uncertainty when wetlands were modelled across all subwatersheds than when the entire wetland area was modelled at the outlet. these results may indicate that wetland position is as important as wetland amount in terms of nutrient reductions.

In order to develop renewable energy sources technology in stand-alone power supply plants, it is necessary to provide designers with tools capable of recognising at short notice any areas of convenience in their utilisation, including projects with twice renewable generators. Typical renewable sources considered are solar and wind energy, but the results are general anywhere energy sources with random emissions are available. For this purpose it is necessary to know in advance the Cost-Law for this kind of power plant in order to make possible comparisons withthe costs for traditional power supply plants, and therefore to be in a position to make a correct decision. Block diagram of the plants includes: - two renewable generators (P-S and P-W) - storage battery (B) and electronics. Project data and power emission law, in turn customised by the meteorological parameters with probabilistic-statistic algorithms are processed to define sizing parameters evaluating cost/load-power Q/P-L that depends on three factors: I: a = P-S/(P-S + P-W) P-L Sharing factor of the two nominal power Ps, Pw assigned of each of the sources S and W;II: b=battery-energy/P-L autonomy assigned to the battery;III: u=estimated maximum unavailability the overall cost can be therefore determined through a minimum cost algorithm, such a cost being a function, for a fixed u, of the two variables a and b.

In this paper, the authors propose a numerical investigation in the time domain of the mechanical wave propagation due to an impulsional load on a semi-infinite soil. the ground is modelled as a porous saturated viscoelastic medium involving the complete Biot theory. An accurate and efficient Finite Element Method using a matrix-free technique is used. Two parallel algorithms are used: Geometrical Domain Decomposition (GDD) and Algebraic Decomposition (AD). Numerical results show that GDD algorithm has the best time. Physical numerical results present the displacements of the fluid and solid particles over the surface and in depth.
