In this paper, we present an image-based markerless human motion capture system, intended for humanoid robot systems. the restrictions set by this ambitious goal are numerous. the input of the system is a sequence of stereo image pairs only, captured by cameras positioned at approximately eye distance. No artificial markers can be used to simplify the estimation problem. Furthermore, the complexity of all algorithms incorporated must be suitable for real-time application, which is maybe the biggest problem when considering the high dimensionality of the search space. Finally, the system must not depend on a static camera setup and has to find the initial configuration automatically. We present a system, which tackles these problems by combining multiple cues within a particle filter framework, allowing the system to recover from wrong estimations in a natural way. We make extensive use of the benefit of having calibrated stereo setup. To reduce search space implicitly, we use the 3D positions of the hands and the head, computed by a separate hand and head tracker using a linear motion model for each entity to be tracked. With stereo input image sequences at a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, the processing rate of our system is 15 Hz on a 3 GHz CPU. Experimental results documenting the performance of our system are available in form of several videos.

In this paper, a new optimisation strategy for the solution of the classical Unit Commitment problem is proposed. this problem is known to be an often large scale, mixed integer programming problem. Due to high combinatorial complexity, the exact solution is often intractable. thus, a metaheuristic based method has to be used to compute a very often suitable solution. the main idea of the approach is to use ant colony algorithm, to explicitly deal withthe feasibility of the solution, and to feed a genetic algorithm whose goal is to intensively explore the search space. Finally, results show that the proposed method leads to the tractable computation of satisfying solutions for the Unit Commitment problem.

New generation sequencing technologies offer unique opportunities and challenges for re-sequencing studies. In this article, we focus on re-sequencing experiments using the Solexa technology, based on bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones, and address an experimental design problem. In these specific experiments, approximate coordinates of the BACs on a reference genome are known, and fine-scale differences between the BAC sequences and the reference are of interest. the high-throughput characteristics of the sequencing technology makes it possible to multiplex BAC sequencing experiments by pooling BACs for a cost-effective operation. However, the way BACs are pooled in such re-sequencing experiments has an effect on the downstream analysis of the generated data, mostly due to subsequences common to multiple BACs. the experimental design strategy we develop in this article offers combinatorial solutions based on approximation algorithms for the well-known max n-cut problem and the related max n-section problem on hypergraphs. Our algorithms, when applied to a number of sample cases give more than a 2-fold performance improvement over random partitioning.

In this paper we present a method to derive Mel-frequency cepstral coef cients directly from the power spectrum of a speech signal. We show that omitting the 'Iterbank in signal analysis does not affect the word error rate. the presented approach simpli'es the speech recognizer s front end by merging subsequent signal analysis steps into a single one. It avoids possible interpolation and discretization problems and results in a compact implementation. We show that frequency warping schemes like vocal tract normalization (VTN) can be integrated easily in our concept without additional computational efforts. Recognition test results obtained withthe RWth large vocabulary speech recognition system are presented for two different corpora: the German VerbMobil II dev99 corpus, and the English North American Business News 94 20k development corpus.
