Machine learning has emerged as a powerful tool for healthcare, aiding in patient outcome predictions and clinical decision-making (Bhardwaj et al. (2017 IEEE 41st annual computer software and applications conference (COMPSAC). IEEE, pp. 236–24 2017)). However, the opacity of many models has hindered their clinical adoption, where interpretability and transparency are vital. this study explores "Explainable Machine Learning for Healthcare," aiming to bridge the gap between clinical interpretability and prediction accuracy. It underscores the importance of interpretability in healthcare. In this study, we have developed two models (Naive Bayes and Logistic Regression) to accurately classify 24 diseases based on patient descriptions written in everyday English, with a 0.99 accuracy rate. A LIME explainer is attached to each model to explain the predictions they made. this study utilizes the "Symptom2Disease" dataset, sourced from Kaggle, containing 1200 data points, with 50 data points allocated to each disease. the study also suggests future research priorities, such as developing innovative algorithms and visualization methods that balance interpretability and prediction accuracy in healthcare. In conclusion, this research advocates for models that excel in both predictive accuracy and providing healthcare professionals with transparency for informed clinical decision-making. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

this study aims to investigate the main important points related to students' healthy lifestyle behaviours and self-rated health of medical students. In this paper, the factors that directly or indirectly determine the health status of the respondents are investigated using correlation and regression analysis. the proposed model will make it possible to predict the score in the self-assessment of the health of each individual student and determine the most significant risk factors for him. the designed model can be used to develop predictive models with the further aim of continuing research using artificial intelligence technologies. © 2024 IEEE.

Recently, multi-fidelity multi-output Kriging have been proposed to take the advantages of both the multi-fidelity and multi-output modelling methods. the predictive performance of multi-fidelity multi-output Kriging model has been evaluated with the modelling efficiency being neglected. In this paper, a multi-fidelity multi-output Kriging model is developed and compared with Kriging, multi-fidelity Kriging, and multi-output Kriging w.r.t. both the modelling accuracy and efficiency. Furthermore, the efficient modelling method for high-dimensional problems is incorporated into the various Kriging models. A 144-dimension engineering problem is established and collected with analytic problems to investigate the modelling accuracy and efficiency. Results show that the multi-output Kriging or multi-fidelity multi-output Kriging model can provide more accurate predictions than the single- or multi-fidelity single-output models on problems with low-dimensional inputs. While, for problems with high-dimensional inputs, the predictive capability of the multi-output Kriging or multi-fidelity multi-output Kriging degenerates significantly with the explosive growth of the time for model construction. With the efficient modelling method, the predictive capability and the modelling efficiency of the multi-output Kriging or multi-fidelity multi-output Kriging model are improved remarkably. However, their performance is still outperformed by single-output multi-fidelity Kriging model throughout the empirical experiments for problems with more than 10 inputs. © the Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play a key role in circular economies, as they are capable of recycling large volumes of polluted water. One of the biggest challenges, though when considering such large-scale plants, is the fact that they consume a great amount of power in order to operate properly. In this work, the problem of optimizing the energy efficiency of WWTPs is addressed by presenting an economic dynamic matrix control (EDMC) formulation for industrial-scale WWTPs. To derive predictive models that are accurate and at the same time suitable for integration in EDMC without the need to perform cumbersome tests on the real plant, we first make use of a cooperative particle swarm optimization solver in order to identify a number of important parameters included in a detailed first principles model of the process;the identified detailed model is then used to derive the much simpler step-response predictive models needed for designing the EDMC scheme. the proposed approach is shown to provide higher energy efficiency when compared against a standard DMC controller, while also satisfying environmental regulations. © 2023 IEEE.

this study uses a multimodal fusion model for early student depression detection by analysing student data from Sina Weibo. It compares early and late fusion methods with traditional Natural Language Processing models and achieves a 3% accuracy improvement over 100 cycles. the study shows that standardising only structured data without neural network mapping reduces predictive performance. It was also found that while both fusion methods exhibited similar predictive capabilities, the late fusion model exhibited overfitting, suggesting that there is potential for the late fusion strategy to further improve model performance performance. this study summarises the ability of multimodal fusion models to effectively detect early signs of student depression and lays the foundation for future research on model interpretability for early student depression detection and future research on student behaviour analysis. © 2024 SPIE.

A code smell is a measurable indicator that highlights significant issues in the software development process caused by inadequate programming practices. these are usually introduced in a software program during the design or implementation phases, and may lead to more significant problems during software maintenance. the existing methods to detect smells based on metrics, heuristics or machine learning have certain limitations. In this paper, we suggest two models built on deep learning for predicting code smells: convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN). these models use features extracted from source code to detect six different code smells. We then evaluate and compare their results. the proposed approach performs remarkably well for single code smell identification according to the experimental results obtained. © 2023 IEEE.

Spontaneous thermal runaway has become a significant issue for thermal management and control systems during the operation of lithium-ion batteries recently. therefore, we discussed the heat distribution of lithium-ion batteries under different high discharge rates. Firstly, the lithium-ion batteries were tested to obtain the properties of electrochemical and thermal behavior at different discharge rates. One-dimensional electrochemical coupling three-dimensional heat transfer models was established by using numerical simulation commercial software. the simulation results were compared with the experimental results to verify the feasibility of the model. Finally, the electrochemical characteristics were incorporated into the three-dimensional model, and the heat distribution profile generated by the batteries connected in series and parallel was simulated to figure out the critical temperature when the thermal runaway was triggered under different C-rates. © 2023 IEEE.

In the world of computers and software, data is an asset;a personal, valuable, and important component in every person's life. Malware used to extract hidden and personal data is slowly spreading around the globe. Conventional signature-based malware detection techniques are finding it difficult to keep up with the constant growth of malware. A viable substitute is machine learning (ML), which can recognize intricate patterns and adjust to new threats. this study compares 11 different Machine Learning models, to find the best model that can detect malware. the algorithms are trained and tested on a dataset called TUNADROMD with and without using Principle Component Analysis (PCA). the Random Forest is found to be the best-performing model with and without PCA with accuracies of 0.99 and 0.98 respectively. the worst-performing model is found to be Logistic Regression both with and without PCA with accuracies of 0.98 and 0.81 respectively. ©2024 IEEE.

At the present stage, just-time software defect prediction has garnered significant attention from researchers due to its granularity and immediacy. Primarily utilizing machine learning classifiers, these models are trained on information from code repositories to predict whether future changes may lead to defects. However, a current challenge with these classifiers lies in the vast number of features, leading to decreased prediction efficiency. these features not only impact model performance but can sometimes result in a decline in predictive accuracy. this paper explores a feature selection technique that combines random forests and self-attention to discard less important features without compromising performance. through this approach, the number of features required for training is significantly reduced, often to less than 50% of the original features. In our study across six software projects, we observed that using feature selection in the KNN model led to a 9% improvement in the F1 metric and a 6% improvement in the AUC metric compared to logistic regression and Bayesian models. Finally, we applied SHAP for interpretability analysis of the model. this research contributes to enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of just-in-time software defect prediction, providing valuable insights for research and practice in related fields. © 2024 SPIE.

this paper presents our experience developing a Llama-based chatbot for question answering about continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) at Ericsson, a multinational telecommunications company. Our chatbot is designed to handle the specificities of CI/CD documents at Ericsson, employing a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) model to enhance accuracy and relevance. Our empirical evaluation of the chatbot on industrial CI/CD-related questions indicates that an ensemble retriever, combining BM25 and embedding retrievers, yields the best performance. When evaluated against a ground truth of 72 CI/CD questions and answers at Ericsson, our most accurate chatbot configuration provides fully correct answers for 61.11% of the questions, partially correct answers for 26.39%, and incorrect answers for 12.50%. through an error analysis of the partially correct and incorrect answers, we discuss the underlying causes of inaccuracies and provide insights for further refinement. We also reflect on lessons learned and suggest future directions for further improving our chatbot's accuracy.
