A generalised neural-fuzzy interpretation model combining the advantages of neural networks and fuzzy logic as an interpretation tool for well-log data analysis is reported in this paper. the model makes use of an artificial neural network to learn the underlying function from a set of training data and then it is used to generate a fuzzy rules-based model. the fuzzy rules-based model enables a log analyst to gain a better understanding of the model. Furthermore, the rule set may be manipulated to modify the performance of the model by incorporating the experience or knowledge of the analyst. However, the number of fuzzy rules generated can be very large. A method is proposed to substantially reduce this number to suit the conditions of the well under investigation. this allows easier interaction between the operator and the model while maintaining prediction accuracy.

Artificial neural networks are increasingly useful computational models, consisting of highly interconnected parallel processing units. In particular, radial basis function, RBF, networks are emerging as important computational models for a broad range of applications. the Gaussian function used in RBF networks has an adjustable parameter, /spl sigma/, which specifies the diameter of the receptive field of the hidden layer neurons. the selection of /spl sigma/ is commonly carried out using heuristic techniques. the selection of /spl sigma/, as shown in this paper, plays an important role in the predictive capabilities of the RBF network. However, the use of a Gaussian function withthe standard deviation of the training pattern output vector is shown to be associated withthe minimum RMS error obtained using an optimum /spl sigma/ value derived using a heuristic technique. the aluminium fluoride, AlF/sub 3/, content of industrial reduction cell for aluminium production is well predicted using the RBF network with a Gaussian function /spl sigma/ value derived using the standard deviation of the training pattern output vector.

A previously formulated [A. Bouzerdoum, D. Filippidis, and V. Purl, 1998) forward-observer (FO) decision-making (DM) model is generalized using global mathematical analysis, optimized (physically and physiologically) and integrated using a computer algebra system (CAS) for application into live training and combat operation (CO). the global geometro-dynamical FO analysis includes: designing the phase-space manifold of the FO's action, the FO's DM system, CO dynamics as visualized by the FO, an integrated FO's DM-CO project, and the problem of chaos in the global DM-CO project. the FO's CAS contains active Mathematica notebooks for the evaluation and simulation of equations formulated in the global mathematical analysis. this includes three original packages: DM-CAS (applied for prediction of the fraction of casualties), CO simulation, and integrated DM-CO simulation.

Digital simulations of random variables or random fields in conjunction with probabilistic methods can be regarded as powerful tools in the analysis of the reliability of nonlinear models of structures and in modelling of environmental problems. In this paper three civil engineering problems are presented and solved using the same methodology of random sampling. the first problem concerns the stability of nonlinear randomly imperfect structures with special attention paid to the probability distribution of the limit loads. the second problem is devoted to the analysis of the effect of the material and load imperfections on the response of nonlinear shell structures. the third problem deals withthe theoretical reconstruction of physical processes in soil, water or air on the basis of limited, fragmentary observed data. this paper presents a unified approach to solutions of nonlinear equations arising in time-independent discrete models with random parameters. A consistent Finite Element formulation was developed For four classical 1-D beam models. this formulation is based upon the solution of the homogeneous differential equation (or equations) associated with each model. Results such as the shape functions, stiffness matrices and consistent force vectors for the constant section beam were found. Some of these results were compared withthe corresponding ones obtained by the standard Finite Element Method (i.e. using polynomial expansions for the field variables). Some of the difficulties reported in the literature concerning some of these models may be avoided by this technique and some numerical sensitivity analysis on this subject are presented. Cognitive models of square comprehension are potential sources of theoretical knowledge for tool designers. Although their use in analysis of existing tools is fairly well-established the literature has shown only limited use of such models for directly developing design ideas. this paper suggests a way of utilizing existing cognitive models of software comprehension to generate design goals and suggest design strategies early in the development cycle. A crucial part of our method is a scheme for explaining the value of tool features by describing the mechanisms that are presumed to underly the expected improvements in task performance.
