this paper presents a solution to analyze the performance of grid scheduling algorithms for tasks with dependencies. Finding the optimal procedures for DAG scheduling in Grid systems is important due to the latest computing necessities: large scale distributed computing and complex applications for different research areas. We propose a solution to evaluate DAG scheduling algorithms using simulation, an approach suitable to evaluate different scheduling algorithms using various task dependencies and considering a wide range of Grid system architectures. Our proposed solution is based on MONARC, a generic simulation framework designed for modeling large scale distributed systems. We present our research results in extending the simulation platform to accommodate various DAG scheduling procedures and, as a case study, we present a critical analysis of four well known DAG scheduling strategies: CCF (Cluster ready Children First), ETF (Earliest Time First), HLFET (Highest Level First with Estimated Times) and Hybrid Remapper. the obtained results show that the proposed solution is a very good instrument for evaluating performance in case of a wide range of DAG scheduling algorithms.

Discovery of large amounts of idle CPUs in fully distributed and shared Grid systems is needed in relevant applications and is still a challenging problem. In this paper we present a fast, scalable and efficient discovery protocol founded on a tree-based peer-to-peer (p2p) network with fault-tolerant capabilities and locality features. Each system node stores a good estimation of the number of CPUs that are available in its branch. Each node notifies its father about changes in this value only when it is meaningful enough. this allows low overhead and a stable behavior with concurrent and dynamic allocation of CPUs. this basic mechanism allows any node to launch a discovery process, that needs only to follow the information of free CPUs in each branch. Results from experiments and simulation tests, using a simple allocation method, show discovery time scaling logarithmically with the number of nodes.

In this paper, a new technique useful for the numerical simulation of large-scale systems is presented. this approach enables the overall system simulation to be formed by the dynamic interconnection of the various interdependent simulations, each representing a specific component or subsystem such as control, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or thermal. Each simulation may be developed separately using possibly different commercial-off-the-shelf simulation programs thereby allowing the most suitable language or tool to be used based on the design/analysis needs. these subsystems communicate the required interface variables at specific time intervals. A discussion concerning the selection of appropriate communication intervals is presented herein. For the purpose of demonstration, this technique is applied to a detailed simulation of a representative aircraft power system, such as that found on the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).this system is comprised of ten component models each developed using MATLAB/Simulink(TM), EASY5(TM), or ACSL(TM). When the ten component simulations were distributed across just four personal computers (PCs), a greater than 15-fold improvement in simulation speed (compared to the single-computer implementation) was achieved.

this paper discusses the current situation with respect to the parallel simulation of environmental phenomena. It is not based on a complete and thorough investigation of the state-of-the-art in this domain and is more driven by observations, experiences and ideas of the four contributors who see the need to raise awareness towards a more systematic approach in the future. It is meant as a discussion paper to stimulate a more systematic approach towards parallel simulation in the environmental domain. While examples are mostly taken from hydrology, they are only used as illustration of a generic situation. the section on related work is mostly based on work published in Environmental Modelling & Software. there might be more literature to look at supporting or contradicting the statements made. the section on practical experiences is largely based on work carried out at CSIRO. the section on theoretical considerations is largely based on observations and ideas of the first author. Together we see the need for a more systematic approach based on sound principles derived from modern software engineering of distributed systems which needs to be grounded by the application domain.

Performance of the PLASMA dense symmetric Eigensolver is optimized for large shared memory computer systems using multiple Householder domains for dense to band reduction and a communication reducing kernel for bulge chasing. the mr(3)-smp code by Petschow and Bientinesi is used for the tridiagonal eigensolution and the eigenvector back-transformations employ a 1D parallel decomposition. the input matrix, Householder vectors and scalars, are distributed among the CPU sockets with interleaved memory pages but the banded matrix, the eigenvectors, and temporary memory buffers are allocated and processed locally. Other considerations and optimization techniques also are presented. Numerical examples show the PLASMA eigensolver can out-perform ELPA and EIGENEXA significantly, for solving all the eigenpairs, if the problem size is sufficiently large, and the 2-stage eigensolution is generally better than its 1-stage counterpart on the latest x86_64 EP-4S CPUs with AVX2.

this paper addresses the optimization of parallel simulators for large-scale parallel systems and applications. Such simulators are often based on parallel discrete event simulation with conservative or optimistic protocols to synchronize the simulating processes. the paper considers how available future information about events and application behaviors can be efficiently extracted and further exploited to improve the performance of adaptive optimistic protocols. First, we extract information about future events and their dependencies in application traces to guide adaptive adjustments of time window in trace-driven parallel simulation. Second, we use information about application behaviors, specifically the iterative behavior found in many applications, to avoid the unnecessary adjustments of time window. these techniques are implemented in the BigSim simulator and tested by real-world and standard benchmark applications including Jacobi3D and HPL. the results show that our optimization approaches can reduce the execution times of simulation ranging from 11% up to 32%. Moreover, our methods are easy to implement and don't need to augment compilers or even modify the core codes of parallel simulators. © 2010 IEEE.
