this paper presents a new distributed computation model adapted to manycore processors. In this model, the run is spread on the available cores by fork machine instructions produced by the compiler, for example at function calls and loops iterations. this approach is to be opposed to the actual model of computation based on cache and predictor. Cache efficiency relies on data locality and predictor efficiency relies on the reproducibility of the control. Data locality and control reproducibility are less effective when the execution is distributed. the computation model proposed is based on a new core hardware. Its main features are described in this paper. this new core is the building block of a manycore design. the processor automatically parallelizes an execution. It keeps the computation deterministic by constructing a totally ordered trace of the machine instructions run. References are renamed, including memory, which fixes the communications and synchronizations needs. When a data is referenced, its producer is found in the trace and the reader is synchronized with the writer. this paper shows how a consumer can be located in the same core as its producer, improving parallel locality and parallelization quality. Our deterministic and fine grain distribution of a run on a manycore processor is compared with OS primitives and API based parallelization (e.g. pthread, OpenMP or MPI) and to compiler automatic parallelization of loops. the former implies (i) a high OS overhead meaning that only coarse grain parallelization is cost-effective and (ii) a non deterministic behaviour meaning that appropriate synchronization to eliminate wrong results is a challenge. the latter is unable to fully parallelize general purpose programs due to structures like functions, complex loops and branches. this article describes a method for modeling the propagation of cracks on any 3D surface. Taking a previous cellular automata model as basis [13], this method allows about any type of cracks on any type of triangulated 3D object. Our model's main advantage is that it proposes a semi-physical solution, making it at the same time user controllable and easily extensible. After summarizing, works in the literature, we make a brief and simple description of what physically are cracks and how they are generated. Based on this idea, we detail our model of crack propagation. We first introduce the general development of cracks. We then propose our original model of spectrum stress. this is followed by the description of the mutual interaction between cracks and stresses. Finally a set of graphical examples, with their respective parameters, concludes this paper.

the main features of gridless finite-size-particle (FSP) codes are discussed, from the point of view of the performances that can be obtained, with respect both to the spatial-resolution level and the efficiency of parallel particle simulations. It is shown that such codes are particularly suited for particle-decomposition parallelization on distributed-memory architectures, as they present a strong reduction, in comparison with particle-in-cell (PIC) codes, of the memory and computational offsets related to storing and updating the replicated fluctuating-field arrays.

the fast simulation of large networks of spiking neurons is a major task for the examination of biology inspired vision systems. Networks of this type are labelling features by synchronization of spikes and there is strong demand to simulate those effects in a real world environment. Because of the quite complex calculations for one model neuron the simulation of thousands or millions of these neurons is not efficient on existing hardware platforms. In order to simulate closer to the real time requirement, it is necessary to implement a dedicated hardware. Our aim is a hardware system mainly consisting of standard components which is as flexible as possible concerning the model neuron but as specialized as necessary to meet our performance requirements. thus we decided to implement a parallel system with Digital Signal Processors (DSP) offering a large on-chip-memory. One main task of this work is the optimization of the simulation algorithm for the neurons distributed to the DSP which means the sequential part of simulation. this optimization benefits from the fact that there is only a very low percentage of simultaneously active neurons in vision networks. For communication between the nodes only spikes are distributed via a spike switching network. Processing of the network topology is realized by two different concepts. One idea is to compute the synapses autonomously on the processing node by representing a regular connection scheme with one connection mask for many neurons. Additional connections requiring adaptability and irregular connection schemes are stored in a shared memory. To avoid a bottleneck a synapse caching is used within each processing node. this paper describes the architecture of a DSP accelerator and shows the advantages with simulation results from a typical large vision network.

the traditional technique to simulate physical systems modeled by partial differential equations is by means of a time-stepped methodology where the state of the system is updated at regular discrete time intervals. this method has inherent inefficiencies. Recently, we proposed [1] a new asynchronous formulation based on a discrete-event-driven (as opposed to time-driven) approach.. where the state of the simulation is updated on a '' need-to-be-done-only '' basis. Using a serial electrostatic implementation, we obtained more than two orders of magnitude speedup compared with traditional techniques. Here we examine issues related to the parallel extension of this technique and discuss several different parallel strategies. In particular, we present in some detail a newly developed discrete-event based parallel electromagnetic hybrid code and its performance using conservative synchronization on a cluster computer. these initial performance results are encouraging in that they demonstrate very good parallel speedup for large-scale simulation computations containing tens of thousands of cells, though overheads for inter-processor communication remain a challenge for smaller computations.

Fast development and increasing trend in multiplayer mobile gaming have created a new challenge to offer better gaming experience to mobile user. With current problems in mobile network revolving around instability of its connection, one way to minimize the impact is to reduce the amount of required state update. Game world partition has been used in multiplayer online game to provide better network management and reduce the number of network traffic by filtering the receiver for state update. In this paper, we define the metric for performance analysis specifically for game world partition. Furthermore, we propose our method where its design consideration is to keep game mechanics simple but also efficient in network resource usage for mobile gaming. We call it Brickworks with Internal Partitions (BIP). In order to compare current methods with ours, we used a simulator which takes random player movement pattern as the input and generate results based on metrics explained in this paper. Our simulation shows better result for BIP compared to other traditional partition method and based on our analysis, it will not consume much of computing resources because of its simple mechanism. Ray-tracing and radiosity algorithms can produce very realistic images, but they require a lot of computations which make them impractical for scenes of high complexity. Several attempts have been made to speed up computations through parallel processing. To get orders of magnitude speedup, massive parallelism involving multiple streams will be necessary. In this paper, a parallel-pipelined multiprocessor system is described, which is made of clusters of specialized computing modules, each constructed of an Intersection Computation Unit (ICU) and a number of Cell Traversal Units (CTUs). Both ICU and CTU are of type pipeline and with data-driven execution. A pseudo-dynamic scheduling is used to reconfigure the system at run time so that the workloads distributed over clusters can be more or less balanced. Furthermore, a hierarchical memory structure is proposed to reduce the average loading time of patches. Performance evaluation has been done and 15% more speedup can be obtained as observed by queueing network simulation. A complete system level simulation is under way by using BONeS which is a block oriented network simulator. © EGGH 1992 - Eurographics workshop on Graphics Hardware 1992. All rights reserved.
