Aim of the study: this work develops a measurement technique for pressure waves in soft tissues. It aims at characterizing, understanding and modeling the generation and propagation of pressure waves in soft tissues, with a view towards medical applications for the treatment of various tissue pathologies. Description of methodology and salient results: First, Hopkinson bar techniques have been adapted to measure the waves emitted by an impact generator, transmitted through the material and reflected at the interfaces. Simulations with an explicit FEM software reproduce the measured data well. Secondly, flexible PVDF gages have been calibrated for measurement of wave propagation in soft tissues. Although PVDF gages have acoustic impedance similar to that of soft tissues, they act nevertheless as foreign inclusion and perturb the measurements. To deal withthis problem, we apply an hybrid experiment-FEM simulations technique to interpret the PVDF gage records and extract reliable pressure data. Results are applied to the design of biomedical devices for the Extracorporeal Shock Wave therapy (ESWT). Conclusion: Adapted Hopkinson bar technique coupled with FEM simulation can predict pressure wave emitted, transmitted and reflected at the interfaces of an impact generator. PVDF flexible gages are a promisisng technique for measuring wave propagation in soft tissues and can serve to calibrate appropriate nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive models for soft tissues. this work contributes to improve the scientific knowledge of the healing effect of shockwaves for different pathologies by providing a well characterized mechanical wave input in the treated tissues.

Technical advances are leading to a pervasive computational infrastructure that;integrates computational processes with embedded sensors and actuators, and giving rise to a new paradigm for monitoring, understanding, and managing natural and engineered systems - one that is information/data-driven. However, developing and deploying these applications remains a, challenge, primarily due to the hick of programming and runtime support. this paper addresses these challenges and presents a programming system for end-to-end sensor/actuator-based scientific and engineering applications. Specifically;the programming system provides semantically meaningful abstractions and runtime mechanisms for integrating sensor systems with computational models for scientific processes, and for in-network data, processing such as aggregation, adaptive interpolation and assimilations. the overall architecture of the programming system and the design of it's key components, as well as its prototype implementation are described. An end-to-end dynamic data-driven oil reservoir application that;combines reservoir simulation models with sensors/actuators in all instrumented oilfield is used as a case study to demonstrate the operation of the programming system, as well as to experimentally demonstrate its effectiveness and performance.

Many researchers claim that crosscutting concerns, which emerge in early software development stages, are harmful to software stability. On the other hand, there is a lack of effective metrics that allow software developers to understand and predict the characteristics of "early" crosscutting concerns that lead to software instabilities. In general, existing crosscutting metrics are defined for specific programming languages and have been evaluated only against source-code analysis, when major design decisions have already been made. this paper presents a generic suite of metrics to objectively quantify key crosscutting properties, such as scattering and tangling. the definition of the metrics is agnostic to particular language intricacies and can be applied to all early software development artifacts, such as usecases and scenarios. We have performed a first stability study of crosscutting on requirements documents. the results pointed out that early scattering and crosscutting have, in general, a strong correlation with major software instabilities and, therefore, can help developers to anticipate important decisions regarding stability at early stages of development.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) gains popularity in fluidized bed modeling. For model validation, there is a need of detailed measurements under well-defined conditions. In the present study, experiments were carried out in a 40 cm wide and 3 m high 2D circulating fluidized bed. Two experiments were simulated by means of the Eulerian multiphase models of the Fluent CFD software. the vertical pressure and solids volume fraction profiles and the solids circulation rate obtained from the simulation were compared to the experimental results. In addition, lateral volume fraction profiles could be compared. the simulated CFB flow patterns and the profiles obtained from simulations were in general in a good agreement withthe experimental results.

Regarding automotive applications, Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) have become very complex plants to comply with present and future requirements in reduction of fuel consumption, pollutant emissions and performance improvement. As a consequence, the development of engine control and diagnostic system is a key aspect in the powertrain design. Mathematical models are useful tools in this direction, with applications that range from the definition of optimised management systems, to Hardware- and software-in-the-Loop testing (HiL and SiL) and to modelbased control strategies. To this extent an original library has been developed by the authors for the simulation of last generation automotive engines. Library blocks were used to assembly a sub-model of the typical intake and exhaust system of a turbocharged engine (with VGT, intercooler, EGR circuit with cooler and throttle). the simulation procedure, developed in Simulink ® and based on a physical modelling of the gas path, was then integrated in a HiL test bench from dSpace Gmbh at Magneti Marelli Powertrain facilities. After calibration and validation -with reference to a small Common Rail Diesel engine- it was widely used in SiL/HiL testing. In the paper the model is presented and several results are reported.

Reliable condition indicating parameters are needed in the energy sector with Web based information structure and with increased number of aged power apparatus operating in digital switching and loading environment. this project for oil-filled power transformers is taken up by Cooperative Research Centre for Integrated engineering Asset Management (CIEAM) to develop knowledge models for prediction of remaining life of operating transformers and for other asset decision making processes in prognosis of failure rate. the aims at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) are to come up with partial discharge (PD) and relaxation condition indicators. In this paper, analysis of the earlier paper results is presented to arrive at condition indicators for aging. the time domain results are analyzed withthree techniques and frequency domain results are analyzed with four techniques based on the reported dielectric response models. the study yields new dynamic information on aged status to develop the multiple diagnostic models for the prediction of the remaining life, rate of degradation and developing faults.

A new method for obtaining the models of continuous systems based on the Legendre orthogonal filters is proposed in this paper. New results in the field of orthogonal functions are used to improve accuracy of modelling. First, Legendre orthogonal filters are designed on the basis of orthogonal functions. then, based on them, adjustable models are formed. models parameters are optimized using the genetic algorithm. As a case study, an experimental simple DC drive was considered and described in details. Simulations are performed to approve theoretical results and demonstrate that the method described in the paper is suitable for systems modelling.
