this paper reports the fire conditions that occurred in a townhouse and the results of software simulations that were performed to provide insight on the peculiar thermal conditions that developed. Fire rescue was called by the occupants of the house when they became aware that smoky conditions were developing on the second floor. Two of the firefighters entered the bedroom where the smoke was originating from and a short time after a flame front invested them while propagating them backward into the stairwell. the post fire investigation determined that the fire started as a consequence of the smoldering combustion of material contained in a wardrobe located adjacent to one of the room walls. A simulation scenario was developed based on the information obtained on the actual building geometry, material thermal properties and the fire behaviour. the calculations that best represented the actual fire conditions indicate that the partial opening of the window and bedroom door provided outside air (oxygen) to a pre-heated, under ventilated fire compartment.

this report summarizes the outcomes of the 9th Workshop on Aspect-Oriented Modeling (AOM) held in conjunction withthe 9thinternationalconference on Model Driven engineering Languages and Systems – models 2006 – in Genoa, Italy, on the 1st of October 2006. the workshop brought together approximately 25 researchers and practitioners from two communities: aspect-oriented software development and software model engineering. It provided a forum for discussing the state of the art in modeling crosscutting concerns at different stages of the software development process: requirements elicitation and analysis, software architecture, detailed design, and mapping to aspect-oriented programming constructs. this paper gives an overview of the accepted submissions and summarizes the results of the different discussion groups. Papers and presentation slides of the workshop are available at .

In order to enhance the quality and added value of their products, Portuguese industry must react to consumer demands. Amongst the main criteria, thermal comfort is becoming a pressing issue. Such new requirements open new fields in research and development, in which computer simulation plays an important role. In the present work a transient model for heat and mass transfer in a fabric, which is a simplified version of the Gibson and Carmachi model, has been implemented. In order to make the model user friendly, a software application has been developed. this makes it easier to introduce the input data and visualize the results. In parallel, new materials made from natural fibres have been used to produce new knitting. their thermal properties have been measured in the laboratory and were used to validate the numerical model. the model can be integrated into a wider model for the thermal regulation of the human body. Such a tool could be very useful for designing new fabrics for clothing applications.

the NEPTUNE project constitutes the thermalhydraulics part of a long-term joint development program for the next generation of nuclear reactor simulation tools. this project is being carried through by EDF (Electricité de France) and CEA (Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique), withthe co-sponsorship of IRSN (Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire) and AREVA NP. NEPTUNE is a multi-phase flow software platform that includes advanced physical models and numerical methods for each simulation scale (CFD, component, system). NEPTUNE also provides new multi-scale and multidisciplinary coupling functionalities. this new generation of two-phase flow simulation tools aims at meeting major industrial needs. DNB (Departure from Nucleate Boiling) prediction in PWRs is one of the high priority needs, and this paper focuses on its anticipated improvement by means of a so-called "Local predictive Approach" using the NEPTUNE CFD code. We firstly present the ambitious "Local predictive Approach" anticipated for a better prediction of DNB, i.e. an approach that intends to result in CHF correlations based on relevant local parameters as provided by the CFD modeling. the associated requirements for the two-phase flow modeling are underlined as well as those for the good level of performance of the NEPTUNE CFD code;hence, the code validation strategy based on different experimental data base types (including separated effect and integral-type tests data) is depicted. Secondly, we present comparisons between low pressure adiabatic bubbly flow experimental data obtained on the DEDALE experiment and the associated numerical simulation results. this study anew shows the high potential of NEPTUNE CFD code, even if, with respect to the aforementioned DNB-related aim, there is still a need for some modeling improvements involving new validation data obtained in thermal-hydraulics conditions representative of PWR ones. Finally, we deal with one of these new experimental data needs and

In this paper, a dilation of the LMI characterization is presented to address constrained robust model predictive control (MPC) for a class of uncertain linear systems with structured time-varying uncertainties. the uncertainty is described in linear fractional transformation (LFT) form. It is known such uncertain systems are popularly used in nonlinear system modeling and many other circumstances. By using parameter dependent Lyapunov functions, the designing conservativeness is reduced compared with some well-known MPC approaches. the proposed approach is applied to a two-mass-spring benchmark system to demonstrate the merits
