the provider of supervisory and treatment services to over 26,000 offenders (as well as the key advisory agency in assisting federal and local courts in determining eligibility for release), the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency for the District of Columbia (CSOSA) has been looking at innovative ways of enhancing its case-management and information retrieval technology for effective and improved supervision of offenders in Washington D.C. AUTO Screener is the latest and "smartest" addition to a group of electronic supervision tools used by law-enforcement officers. this application is a recent example of CSOSA's move towards object-oriented technology. Developed for the Community Supervision Services (CSS) and Community Justice Programs (CJP) divisions of CSOSA, AUTO Screener is an "intelligent" assessment tool used by Community Service Officers (CSO) to determine the appropriate level of supervision for offenders. Its "intelligence" lies in its ability to automatically generate a recommended supervision level and a prescriptive supervision plan for that offender based on extensive data intake performed by the CSO. Based on the screener results and a pre-determined formula and weight matrix, the system calculates a risk score and needs items and then prescribes a supervision treatment plan based on these scores. the system is designed to be fully table driven from its Graphical user interface. the purpose is to provide maximum flexibility for users to design different screeners and experiment with its effects.

Active diffusing light pipes (such as hollow tubular lighting) are means of directing and diffusion light (daylight or electrical light) into interior spaces. the two principal objectives of this paper are: 1) to show the development of an advanced new light pipe simulation model and 2) to compare this optical model with another Visual Ergonomics lighting simulation model. the optical model of a diffusing light pipe was realized for the facility of the simulation using the Apilux software. this optical model is created by reflective mirrors with variable transparence. the Apilux optical model are designed from the analytical models of efficiency calculation (see section 1). the Visual Ergonomics lighting model are designed by starting from measurement results (photometrical characterization of a diffusing light pipe).

Graphs are a common means to represent structures in models and meta-models of software systems. In this context, the description of model domains by classifying the domain entities and their relations using class diagrams or type graphs has emerged as a very valuable principle. the constraints that can be imposed by pure typing are, however, relatively weak;it is therefore common practice to enrich type information with structural properties (such as local invariants or multiplicity conditions) or inheritance. In this paper, we show how to formulate structural properties using graph constraints in type graphs with inheritance, and we show how to translate constrained type graphs with inheritance to equivalent constrained simple type graphs. From existing theory it then follows that graph constraints can be translated into preconditions for productions of a typed graph transformation system which ensures those graph constraints. this result can be regarded as a further important step of integrating graph transformation with object-orientation concepts.

this paper presents a basis for quantifying room fire theory in forensic investigations. Integrating fire theory into investigations provides a mechanism to rationalize fire origin, damage and propagation. A series of ten full-scale burns was completed in three single-family dwellings, with each burn instrumented by thermocouple trees and interior and exterior video cameras. the trends and observations of fire behaviour were compared against NFPA 921 defined theory and criteria for flashover development. the analysis of burning trends can form the framework for correlating fire behaviour to burn patterns and witness observations and can establish a basis for the use of computational fluid dynamic simulations;now possible by software such as the Fire Dynamics Simulator. the findings of the research test program are incorporated into a predictive methodology to anticipate room fire theory for point-source and area-source fires.

software development processes such as the Waterfall process and Extreme Programming are project management methods (PMMs) which are well known and widely used. However, conventional project management (PM) lacks the process concepts expressed in PMMs, and the connection between PMMs and PM is not much explored in the literature. We present data models for PM and PMM, in a framework that can articulate the PM-to-PMM relationship, illustrating with simple examples. A java/XML implementation of this framework can create and then revise a "PMM-aware" project, conforming to a specified PMM. In terms of the framework, we describe a simple project data visualization and associated method that can be used to synthesize a PMM for a project instance that was initially created without reference to any PMM.

Regression equations can be used for predicting temperature and relative humidity in single-zone buildings. this paper presents a methodology for computing the parameters of such kind of models based on weather data and room air hygrotermal conditions. In addition, the computed model can be very effective on the synthesis of advanced controllers applied to HVAC systems. A building hygrothermal simulation tool has been used to generate the data (heating signal, outdoor temperature and relative humidity, total solar radiation, indoor temperature and relative humidity). Validation procedures have shown very good agreement between the regression model and the simulation tool for winter and summer periods in Brazilian cities.

Scenarios are a popular means for capturing behavioural requirements of software systems early in the lifecycle. Scenarios show how components interact to provide system level functionality. If component reliability information is available, scenarios can be used to perform early system reliability assessment. In this paper we present a novel automated approach for predicting software system reliability. the approach involves extending a scenario specification to model (1) the probability of component failure, and (2) scenario transition probabilities derived from an operational profile of the system. From the extended scenario specification, probabilistic behaviour models are synthesized for each component and are then composed in parallel into a model for the system. Finally, a user-oriented reliability model described by Cheung is used to compute a reliability prediction from the system behaviour model. the contribution of this paper is a reliability prediction technique that takes into account the component structure exhibited in the scenarios and the concurrent nature of component-based systems. We also show how implied scenarios induced by the component structure and system behaviour described in the scenarios can be used to evolve the reliability prediction.
