the emerging standard for the platform- and system-independent representation of data mining models PMML (predictive Model Markup Language) is currently supported by a number of knowledge discovery support engines. the primary purpose of the PMML standard is to separate model generation from model storage in order to enable users to view, post-process, and utilize data mining models independently of the tool that generated the model. In this paper two systems, called VizWiz and PEAR, are described. these software packages allow for the visualization and evaluation of data mining models that are specified in PMML. they can be viewed. as decision support systems, since they enable non-expert users of data mining results to interactively inspect and evaluate these results.

Automated finite-state verification techniques have matured considerably in the past several years, but state-space explosion remains an obstacle to their use. theoretical lower bounds on complexity imply that all of the techniques that have been developed to avoid or mitigate state-space explosion depend on models that are "well-formed" in some way, and will usually fail for other models. this further implies that, when analysis is applied to models derived from designs or implementations of actual software systems, a model of the system "as built" is unlikely to be suitable for automated analysis. In particular, compositional, hierarchical analysis (where state-space explosion is avoided by simplifying models of subsystems at several levels of abstraction) depend on the modular structure of the model to be analyzed. We describe how as-built finite-state models can be refactored for compositional state-space analysis, applying a series of transformations to produce an equivalent model whose structure exhibits suitable modularity. the process is supported by a parser which can parse a subset of Promela syntax and transform Promela code into refactored state graphs. © 2003 ACM.

there has recently been a trend in requirements engineering towards combining techniques in order to complement the deficiencies of one with the strengths of another. RESCUE is a process that continues this tradition and combines human activity modelling and i∗ system goal modelling in a concurrent engineering approach to support the generation of more complete and correct use case models and descriptions, and hence better requirements. the process is aimed at developing large socio-technical systems where confidence in the correctness and completeness of use cases, and hence requirements, is important. the RESCUE process has been applied and tested in the specification of requirements for CORA-2, a real and large-scale socio-technical system in which computerised assistance will be provided to air traffic controllers. © 2003 IEEE.

this paper presents a techno-economic evaluation of combined UMTS and WLAN operator business case spanning years 2002-2011. the study is based on the work by the TONIC project [I] under the European Union IST (Information Society Technologies) programme [2]. the study provides a framework to compare all the main factors affecting the UMTS operator's business case and evaluation of the WLAN profitability impact as complementary access technology. the example cases differ in country demographics and rollout plans relating to competition and demand situation and regulatory requirements.

Requirements engineering for technical systems involves an intricate interplay of conceptual synthesis of alternative requirements and design configurations, preliminary impact analysis of these alternatives using complex simulations and multimedia visualizations, and human decision-making based on goal trade-offs. Requirements traceability in such settings must be both product- and process-oriented: it must enable an efficient media-based comparison of product alternatives from the current project or related experiences, and it must facilitate reuse of analysis process experiences to avoid unnecessary repetition of negative experiences. We study these problems in a large interdisciplinary project whose aim it is to optimize the innovation supply chains linking chemical engineering, plastics engineering, and application goals e.g. in the automotive industry.

Assurance that a formal specification (system specification or software specification) possesses desired properties can be achieved through (1) manual inspections, (2) formal verification of the desired properties, or (3) simulation and testing of the specification. To achieve the high level of confidence in the correctness required in a safety-critical system, all three approaches must be used in concert. We have developed an specification language, called RSML/sup -e/, and an environment, called NIMBUS, which provides support for all these activities. the three V&V techniques fill complementary roles within the validation and verification process. Manual inspections and visualization provide the specification team, customers, and regulatory representatives the means to informally verify that the behavior described formally matches the desired "real world" behavior of the system. RSML/sup -e/ is a fully formal, synchronous, data-flow language. NIMBUS supports large-scale, distributed simulation of specifications through communications over Microsoft's distributed COM or OMG's CORBA. © 2003 IEEE.

the Unified Modeling Language (UML) has become a widely adopted standard in the software industry. While UML has established itself in detailed software design, its usage as an architecture description language is still taking its shape. In particular, there is a growing need for techniques to define domain specific architectural constraints and conventions in UML. We address this issue by adopting the concept of UML profiles for architectural design. Architectural profiles are specialized for describing and constraining software architecture descriptions for a given domain. We argue that these profiles represent an appropriate abstraction level to elaborate architectural constraints and conventions. We present a general schema for arranging architectural profiles and a set of conformance rules that define how these profiles are interpreted, constituting a profile definition language for validating architectural design. We introduce a tool for performing architectural validation and discuss the results of our initial case studies. © 2003 ACM.

Elicitation of requirements becomes more difficult as usually consumers do not explicitly know what they want and it is difficult for them to express their ideas. To support different views of product development, such as project management and design, the method should present requirements in a 'rich enough' way to avoid overloading management but in the same time giving designers the detailed information they need. Requirements engineering should be easy to integrate to the software development process. To this end we have constructed a support environment for the method within Metaedit+ Meta CASE tool to present and manage the requirements. We have developed a new method that tries answering the complexities of development process. We based our method on critical success chains (CSC) method, that includes a top-down approach of planning but also wide participation of IS customers to get rich information. CSC aggregates the results of many individual interviews into meaningful graphical models of what is important about a potential system. CSC is extended with customer segmentation and lead user concepts from marketing. © 2003 IEEE.

Most applications developed today rely on a given middleware platform which governs the interaction between components, the access to resources, etc. To decide, which platform is suitable for a given application (or more generally, to understand the interaction between application and platform), we propose UML models of both the architectural style of the platform and the application scenario. Based on a formal interpretation of these as graphs and graph transformation systems, we are able to validate the consistency between platform and application. We exemplify the approach for platforms realizing the service-oriented architectural style and a supply chain management system as application scenario. Besides, we demonstrate the potential of model checking for graph transformation systems for answering the above consistency question. © 2003 ACM.

there is a growing need to reduce the cycle of business information systems development and make it independent of underlying technologies. Model driven synthesis of software offers solutions to these problems. this article describes a set of tools and methods applicable for synthesizing business software from technology independent models. this method and these tools are distinguished by the use of extended meta-models which embody knowledge of the problem domain and target software architecture of the synthesized software system by the use of the model conversion rules described using the combined metamodel and by the use of reference models of problem domains and sub-domains, which are combined and extended during the construction of software system descriptions. the difference of our method from other domain specific methods is the separate step of solution domain analysis and the use of meta-model extensions. this study has been done in the context of developing product-line architecture for insurance applications.
