Heterogeneity of computer environment allows execution of large diverse applications, but it also simultaneously aggravates mapping. We present a combined multicriterial mapping based on the MEVSP model. Model parameters originate from the level of application, platform, mapping and user. the most suitable prediction methods are long-term performance prediction, short-term prediction of threshold violations and short-term predictions of categorical data. Heterogeneity level can be expressed by single or stochastic values and by consistency level. the application of the MEVSP model and prediction procedures can improve the application execution, as shown in a simplified environment.

Two generalized logistic regression models were compared on a set of observations describing persons with mental disabilities. the main variable of interest (willingness of the parents to incorporate their mentally handicapped offspring into on-farm activities) has three different values (no, undecided, yes). these values can be regarded as unordered (the variable having nominal measurement scale) or as ordered (the variable having ordinal measurement scale). Nominal and ordinal logistic regression models were used to analyze the impact of several predictors on the main variable of interest. We compare the two models in terms of the likelihood ratio test and the Nagelkerke coefficient of determination. It turns out that the ordinal regression assumptions are often not met. In our case, the nominal regression model has proved preferable to the ordinal regression one.

Current object-oriented (OO) software systems must satisfy new requirements that include quality aspects. these, contrary, to functional requirements, are difficult to determine during the test phase of a project. predictive and estimation models offer an interesting solution to this problem. this paper describes an original approach to build rule-based predictivemodelsthat are based on fuzzy logic and that enhance the performance of classical decision trees. the approach also attempts to bridge the cognitive gap that may, exist between the antecedent and the consequent of a rule by, turning the latter into a chain of sub rules that account for domain knowledge. the whole framework is evaluated on a set of OO applications.

We pursue here an implementation independent system level design specification for real-time embedded systems using modular executable discrete event models. this paper introduces a formal abstraction for the specification of such design models. In multi-tier enterprise systems, application servers are key components that implement business logic and provide application services. To support a large number of simultaneous accesses from clients over the Internet and intranet, most application servers use replication and multi-threading to handle concurrent requests. While multiple processes and multiple threads enhance the processing bandwidth of servers, they also increase the contention for resources in application servers. this paper investigates this issue empirically based on a middleware benchmark. A cost model is proposed to estimate the overall performance of application servers, including the contention overhead this model is then used to determine the optimal degree of the concurrency of application servers for a specific client load A case study based on CORBA is presented to validate our model and demonstrate its application.

this paper presents a study withthe intent to examine the opportunities provided by creating and using simulation models of software development processes. A model of one software development project was created through means of system dynamics, with data collected from documents, interviews and observations. the model was simulated in a commercial simulation tool. the simulation runs indicate that increasing the effort spent on the requirements phase, to a certain extent, will decrease the leadtime and increase the quality in similar projects. the simulation model visualizes relations in the software process, and can be used by project managers when planning future projects. the study indicates that this type of simulation is a feasible way of modelling the process dynamically although the study calls for further investigations as to how project or process managers can benefit the most from using system dynamics simulations.

Requirements Evolution is considered one of the most critical issues in developing computer-based systems. Despite the recognised role of requirements in softwareengineering, Requirements Evolution still remains a phenomenon little understood from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. this paper investigates our ability to understand the Requirements Evolution Process by means of metrics, the empirical investigation of an avionics industrial safety-critical case study assesses our ability to monitor Requirements Evolution by evolutionary, trends and the Requirements Maturity Index (RMI). We propose an enrichment of the RMI in order to take into account process aspects and history of changes. the empirical results support the models underlying the proposed metrics. the empirical nature of this work allows to replicate the experiment in other industrial contexts and to benefit of our results.
