Posing speculative questions about a software system is an important yet often unsupported activity. Current impact analysis techniques tend to focus upon the functionality of the system, whilst the effects of change upon performance requirements are largely ignored until after implementation. this tendency, can lead to costly and time-consuming mistakes. Event-Based traceability provides a robust method for handling both long-term evolutionary change as well as the short-term speculative change needed to support performance related impact analysis. By establishing dynamic links, capable of propagating data values and commands between requirements and performance models, it becomes possible to automate a wide range of speculative queries and to enhance the overall ability to predict the impact of change upon the performance of the system.

Network security has now become one of the most important aspects in computer systems and the Internet. Apart from strong encryption, there is no definite method of truly securing network, thus they must be protected at different levels of the OSI model. At the physical layer, they can be protected by lock-and-key, and at the data link, they can be protected within VLANS (Virtual LANs). With the network and transport layers, networks can be secured by firewalls, which monitor source and destination network addresses, and source and destination ports, respectively. At the session level, user names and passwords are be used. Unfortunately, all these methods can be prone to methods, which can overcome the protection used. this paper expands the research previously undertaken on a misuse system based on intelligent agent software technology. the system monitors user actions in real-time and take appropriate actions if necessary. Along with this our system used short-term prediction to predict the user behaviour and advise the system administrator accordingly, before the actual actions take place. this paper presents new results, which are based on an increased number of users. We have made more extensive experiments than our first series of experiments, on the user behaviour. We also have tested our short-term prediction model, introduced the notion of intervention to our model, and found that the results are very close to the actual user behaviour.

this paper addresses the problem of requirements engineering for complex socio-technical systems where an optimal set of technology components and human operators-have to be selected to achieve system goals. Goals are achieved by tasks that are expressed as operational scenarios with variations in environmental conditions. the approach taken is to develop a probabilistic model of system reliability as a Bayesian Belief Network, (BBN). the BBN model predicts human and machine reliabilities, given input variables representing the scenario and ranges of environmental conditions (i.e. weather, climate, etc.). A software tool, the System Reliability Analyser (SRA) is described that runs a set of scenarios against the BBN models while systematically varying the ranges of 12 input variables specifying properties of human operators such as training, technical equipment specification and environmental conditions. the tool reports human and technical equipment specifications that "survive" the scenario testing at a reliability level higher than a user-defined level (e.g. failure probability p<0.05 for all steps within the range of test scenarios). A case study evaluation of the tool is reported using a naval command and control domain, in which different combinations of human roles and equipment requirements specifications are automatically validated against a set of scenarios describing missile attacks on a navy frigate. the implication of using BBN technology and the SRA tool for automating socio-technical system requirements validation and optimising requirements selection in component-based systems is discussed.

Despite the strategic and software engineering benefits mobile agents (MAs) brings to network management, their performance is still a controversial issue. A number of quantitative analyses and experiments on mobile agent performance have been reported in the last few years. Among the claims in these studies, there are some obvious controversies. In an effort to determine the existence of contradiction and explore the cause for disagreement, this paper compares a number of evaluative studies of MA performance in the network management domain. their experiments and analytical models are briefly described, and their findings and conclusions are highlighted for effective contrasting. With direct inference from this comparative survey, we suggest that many factors must be carefully taken into account when evaluating the MA network management paradigm. these key factors include the size of the network, the specific management tasks the MA is to perform, the initial MA size, data compression, the transfer mode, the specific platform adopted, etc. Our careful examination reveals that most of the disagreement is caused by difference in the above measurement factors. Ample evidence from the reviewed studies demonstrated that MAs are not actually efficient enough for real-time polling and collecting large amount of data, but we have enough proof that MAs demonstrates considerable robustness and performance in performing complex local computing, data filtering and updating. One contradiction in the body of literature is identified when the network has limited size. More carefully plane study is needed to solve this obvious contradiction.

It captures many of the best practices in modern software development in a form that is suitable for a wide range of projects and organizations. It embeds object-oriented techniques and uses the UML as the principal notation for the several models that are built during the development. the RUP is also an open process framework that allows software organizations to tailor the process to their specific need, and to capture their own specific process know-how in the form of process components. Many process components are now developed by various organizations to cover different domains, technologies, tools, or type of development, and these components can be assembled to rapidly compose a suitable process. this tutorial will introduce the basic concepts and principles, which lie under the RUP framework, and show concrete examples of its usage.

this paper presents a practical knowledge discovery approach to software quality and resource allocation that incorporated recent advances in rough set theory, parameterized approximation spaces and rough neural computing. In addition, this research utilizes the results of recent studies of software quality measurement and prediction. A software quality measure quantifies the extent to which some specific attribute is present in a System Such measurements are considered in the context of rough sets. It has been shown rough sets work well in coping with the uncertainty in making decisions based on software engineering data. the thrust of this research is to provide a framework for making resource allocation decisions based on evaluation of various measurements of the complexity of software. Knowledge about software quality is gained during preprocessing during which, software measurements are analyzed using discretization techniques, genetic algorithms in deriving reducts, and in the derivation of training and testing sets, especially in the context of the Rough Sets Exploration System (RSES) developed by the logic group at the Institute Of Mathematics at Warsaw University. the results of preprocessing provide a basis for rough neural computing and resource allocation decisions. Experiments have shown that both RSES and rough neural net-work models are effective in classifying software modules, the contribution of this paper is a presentation of a rough set based framework for making decisions about software quality and resource allocation.

In this paper, we present the application of neural network for predicting software development faults including object-oriented faults. Object-oriented metrics can be used in quality estimation. In practice, quality estimation means either estimating reliability or maintainability. In the context of object-oriented metrics work, reliability is typically measured as the number of defects. Object-oriented design metrics are used as the independent variables and the number of faults is used as dependent variable in our study. software metrics used include those concerning inheritance measures, complexity measures, coupling measures and object memory allocation measures. We also test the goodness of fit of neural network model by comparing the prediction result for software faults with multiple regression model. Our study is conducted on three industrial real-time systems that contain a number of natural faults that has been reported for three years (Mei-Huei Tang et al., 1999).

Partitioned linear-nonlinear models are developed to improve in-sample precision and reduce sensitivity to out-sample modelling errors in stock price predictions. Such partitioned models are compared with linear regression models and nonlinear neural network models. the partitioned models demonstrate similar performance to the nonlinear models in both in-sample and out-sample predictions. Robust prediction schemes are then introduced to improve the predictabilities of partitioned models. Such partitioned models with robust schemes outperformed both linear regression models and nonlinear neural networks models in terms of prediction accuracy as well as model robustness. In addition, a linear relationship of non-model-based correlation and linear-regression-model-based predictability is found to exist between intraday (as well as AHI-PMI) data and stock price indexes of open, close, high and low.
