A bi-directional computing architecture for time series prediction, which computes not only the future prediction transformation but also the past prediction one, is proposed recently and applied to several prediction tasks. According to the previous studies, an improvement of the prediction performances has been observed with different kinds of data sets. Nevertheless, its detailed mechanism for temporal signal processing is not clear yet. then, in order to solve this problem, the model's responses are investigated based on the principal component analysis approach in this paper. As a result, it is found experimentally that an enrichment of the inner information representations gives the model an advantage on signal processing abilities through bi-directionalization of the computing architecture.

Conventional Gunn diodes consist of a single transit region. For high frequency generation, these devices are quite short and hence yield limited power because of the small potential that can be applied before the device breaks down. In this paper, we present Monte Carlo simulations of multiple (up to eight) transit regions Gunn Diodes and investigate their feasibility and power performance. We found that coherent transfer of domains occurs in all the devices we investigated and there seems to be no obvious upper limit to the number of transit regions that could be incorporated into a single device (in the absence of thermal limitations). Our models predict that the power attainable from the Gunn diodes increases linearly with the square of the number of transit regions.

Predicting stability in object-oriented (OO) software, i.e., the ease with which a software item can evolve while preserving its design, is a key feature for software maintenance. We present a novel approach which relies on the case-based reasoning (CBR) paradigm. thus, to predict the chances of an OO software item breaking downward compatibility, our method uses knowledge of past evolution extracted from different software versions. A comparison of our similarity-based approach to a classical inductive method such as decision trees, is presented which includes various tests on large datasets from existing software.

this paper presents the first in a series of experiments to study the behavior of a hybrid technique for model discovery in multivariate time series using similarity based neurofuzzy neural networks and genetic algorithms. this method discovers dependency patterns relating future values of a target series with past values of all examined series, and then constructs a prediction function. It accepts a mixture of numeric and non-numeric variables, fuzzy information, and missing values. Experiments were made changing parameters controlling the algorithm from the point of view of: i) the neuro-fuzzy network, ii) the genetic algorithm, and iii) the parallel implementation. Experimental results show that the method is fast, robust and effectively discovers relevant interdependencies.

the time course of the process preparing for saccade eye movement was investigated in a psychophysical experiment involving a delayed saccade task. the presentation of the saccade response signal was delayed with respect to the presentation of a cue that informed the subject of metrics of the upcoming saccade. the cue appeared probabilistically at one of two potential locations. the saccadic reaction times (SRTs) decreased with longer delays of the saccade response signal. this indicates that the preparatory process of the saccade progresses according to the information about the metrics of the saccade during the delay. Additionally, the difference in saccade reaction times for different probabilities of the cue presentation disappeared with a delay longer than 192 ms. this suggests that the effect of the prediction according to the probability decreases as the preparatory process evoked by the cue progresses. We examined whether the data could be explained with a linear model.

the competitive associative nets called CAN2 involve competitive and associative schemes for learning to achieve piecewise linear approximation of nonlinear functions. Although the learning schemes of the nets have been shown effective in many applications such as function approximation, control, and rainfall estimation, the competitive learning basically has local minima problems. To overcome the problems, we here introduce asymptotic situation, where the number of units are very large, and then derive a condition of asymptotic optimality for minimizing the mean square error (MSE) of approximation. We next embed the condition into the incremental learning algorithm, where the condition is used for deciding whether the learning process is stuck at a local minimum or not, and reinitializing a unit for global optimum. By means of numerical experiments with a number of benchmark functions, we have verified the CAN2 with the present algorithm achieves smaller MSE than the widely used schemes using learning or optimization techniques as follows: the BPN (backpropagation net), the RBFN (radial basis function net) and the SVR (support vector regression).

this paper deals with the possibility of applying predictive control for water level control in tanks of water supply plants. the proposed control system includes a ground water intake plant; water treatment plant and water tanks. Since predictive controllers are based on mathematical models of controlled processes, the mathematical model of a water supply plant has been created for the purpose of design and verification of this control algorithm. the price of electrical energy during the day has also been taken into consideration for controller design. By doing this, in addition to keeping the water level within regulated limits, reduction of the costs of energy consumption has been achieved. the properties of the designed control system have been investigated by water supply plant mathematical model simulation.

Steel is the most important and versatile engineering alloy. It finds numerous applications and stands second to cement in its consumption in the world. the properties of steel can be controlled and varied over a wide range by changing the heat treatment and the alloying elements. the relation between the properties and the alloying elements of the alloy is, however, very complex and non-linear in nature. this paper presents the development of a back-propagation (BP) neural network model for prediction of the mechanical properties, and the sensitivity of each element on the properties for a given combination of composition and heat treatment variables for low nickel-chromium steels. the simulation results show that the average output-prediction error by BP network is less than 5 % of the prediction range in more than 95 % of the cases, which is quite acceptable for all metallurgical purposes.

In this paper, we present a modified FIR (Finite Impulse Response) network model for improving the capability of time series prediction system. the model has interval arithmetic capability as well as the time series prediction capability of the Finite Impulse Response (FIR) network. the proposed model exhibits some advantageous features, as follows. Since the interval values can be generated as input features for the neural network by data segmentation and grouping, the amount of data and computation for the learning stage can be reduced. the weather forecast system based on the model can generate the output values in the form of interval representation, and can avoid the over-training effect that is caused by unbalanced learning data. From the experimental results of the forecast of monthly regional precipitation in Korea, the usefulness of the proposed model is evaluated.

It has been claimed that dynamic prediction models can be used to help project managers make more accurate estimates than static prediction models. However, such a claim needs to be validated so that project managers can use dynamic models with confidence. In this paper we discuss an experiment we conducted in an academic environment that compared a dynamic model using Bayesian belief networks (BBN) with a static model involving the COCOMO and Akiyama models. the results from this experiment in fact validate the above claim. However we suggest replication of this experiment in order to increase confidence to our results.
