A recurrent neuro-fuzzy network based strategy for batch process modelling and optimal control is presented. the recurrent neuro-fuzzy network allows the construction of a "global" nonlinear long-range prediction model from the fuzzy conjunction of a number of "local" linear dynamic models. In this recurrent neuro-fuzzy network, the network output is fed back to the network input through one or more time delay units. this particular structure ensures that predictions from a recurrent neuro-fuzzy network are long-range or multi-step-ahead predictions. Process knowledge is used to initially partition the process nonlinear characteristics into several local operating regions and to aid in the initialisation of the corresponding network weights. Process input output data is then used to train the network. Membership functions of the local regimes are identified and local models are discovered through network training. In the paper, a recurrent neuro-fuzzy network is used to model a fed-batch reactor and to calculate the optimal feeding policy.

the conventional fuzzy logic techniques have been extensively used in modeling nonlinear and complex systems. Such techniques, however, generally ignore the statistical nature that many complex systems may exhibit. When the system's behavior is significantly influenced by stochastic parameters, it is reasonable to expect that the modeling performance would be improved if the effect of such parameters is taken into account. In this paper, a novel modification to a table look-up scheme is proposed. A new stochastic chaotic time series is also introduced. It is demonstrated that the modified method improves learning accuracy by considering the system's stochastic nature. Moreover, examining the results at different noise levels reveals that this improvement is indeed due to the stochastic nature of the system.

the speech wave passes through the glottis and the vocal tract and finally arrives at the lips. the shapes of these organs modify the sounds we hear. A "tube model" can represent the vocal tract, and the various cross-sections progressing from the glottis to the lips characterize differing sounds. Such cross-sections may be linked to patient state. this may be NORMAL or ABNORMAL, damaged by cancer or unfortunate surgery or just old age. the author is interested in using vowel sounds as a possible diagnostic tool. Cross-sections of the vocal tract model can be calculated from the constants of a linear prediction coder, LPC, trained with a suitable vowel. the paper shows that an artificial neural network version of the LPC gives lower error than the original which should make it more useful for calculating cross-sectional areas. Two stages of fuzzy variables are used to diagnose a patient into two levels, NORMAL or ABNORMAL. Further analysis reinforces the diagnosis by using adverbs LIKELY or UNLIKELY to end up with one of four categories.

An online approach for rule-base evolution by recursive adaptation of rule structure and parameters is described . An integral part of the procedure is to maximise the model transparency by simplifying the fuzzy linguistic descriptions of the input variables. the rule base evolves over time, utilising direct calculation approaches and hence minimising the reliance on the use of computationally expensive techniques, such as genetic algorithms. An online version of subtractive clustering recently introduced by the authors (P.P. Angelov and R.A. Buswell) is used for determination of the antecedent part of the fuzzy rules. Recursive least squares estimation is employed to determine the parameters of the consequent part of each rule. the use of these efficient non-iterative techniques is the key to the low computational demands of the algorithm. the application of similarity measures improves the interpretability and compactness of the resulting eR model, with no significant detriment to the model precision. A time series prediction problem on data from a real indoor climate control (ICC) system has been considered to test and validate the proposed model simplification method.

An important stage of rapid prototyping technology is generating computer 3D model of an object to be reproduced. Wide variety of techniques for 3D model generation exists beginning with manual 3D models generation and finishing with full-automated reverse engineering system. the progress in CCD sensors and computers provides the background for integration of photogrammetry as an accurate 3D data source with CAD/CAM. the paper presents the results of developing photogrammetric methods for non-contact spatial coordinates measurements and generation of computer 3D model of real objects. the technology is based on object convergent images processing for calculating its 3D coordinates and surface reconstruction. the hardware used for spatial coordinates measurements is based on PC as central processing unit and video camera as image acquisition device. the original software for Windows 9X realizes the complete technology of 3D reconstruction for rapid input of geometry data in CAD/CAM systems. Technical characteristics of developed systems are given along with the results of applying for various tasks of 3D reconstruction. the paper describes the techniques used for non-contact measurements and the methods providing metric characteristics of reconstructed 3D model. Also the results of system application for 3D reconstruction of complex industrial objects are presented.

the Cerebellar Model Arithmetic Computer (CMAC) is a table lookup neurocomputing technique. It can be viewed as a basis function network (BFN) and performs well in terms of its fast learning speed, local generalization capability for approximating nonlinear functions. However, a disadvantage is that the derivative of its output cannot be preserved due to the CMAC using a constant basis function within each quantized state. this creates a limitation and inconvenience while the derivative information is needed in real-world applications. the paper proposes a weight grey CMAC (WGCMAC) that includes the conventional CMAC weight addressing scheme and the weighted grey prediction model to reslove this problem. Based on the weighted grey prediction model, we present an efficient learning algorithm for the proposed WGCMAC. Experiments confirm that the WGCMAC not only has a faster learning speed than the conventional CMAC, but also provides output derivatives and more precise learning results. In addition, compared with other enhanced CMAC models providing output derivatives, the proposed method has the fastest learning speed.

the analysis and forecasting of seasonal streamflow series are of utmost importance in the operation planning of water resource systems. One of the greatest difficulties in forecasting these series is the seasonal nature of streamflow series, due to wet and dry periods of the year. Moreover, real-world data are noisy and may contain contradictions and imperfections. Tolerance to imprecision and uncertainty is also required in order to achieve tractability and robustness. Fuzzy set-based data analysis models are especially suitable for these purposes. this suggests the application of neurofuzzy network models to seasonal streamflow forecasting. In this paper, a class of neurofuzzy network is applied to the problem of seasonal streamflow forecasting. this model is based on a constructive, competitive learning method where neuron groups compete when the network receives a new input, so that it learns the essential parameters to model a fuzzy system, which are the fuzzy rules and membership functions. A database of the average monthly inflows from a Brazilian hydroelectric plant was used. the performance of the model was compared with conventional approaches and the results show that the proposed model has a better performance than other methodologies which consider one-step-ahead forecasting and multi-step-ahead forecasting.

How to discover high-level knowledge modeled by complicated functions, ordinary differential equations and difference equations in databases automatically is a very important and difficult task in KDD research. In this paper, high-level knowledge modeled by ordinary differential equations (ODEs) is discovered in dynamic data automatically by an asynchronous parallel evolutionary modeling algorithm (APHEMA). A numerical example is used to demonstrate the potential of APEA. the results show that the dynamic models discovered automatically in dynamic data by computer sometimes can compare with the models discovered by human.

A Monte Carlo model has been developed to simulate the radiative process and to predict the effective emissivity for accurate radiometric temperature measurements in rapid thermal processing (RTP) furnaces. the effective emissivity used here takes into consideration the limited numerical aperture of the lightpipe. the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) is applied to describe the angular distribution of the reflected energy. After comparing several BRDF models, we recommend two simple modified models for use in the Monte Carlo method. the comparison between the modeling results from the BRDF model and the specularity model validates the usage of the BRDF models and makes it attractive to obtain the BRDF through characterizing the surface roughness.

System level design is nowadays a complex process due to heterogeneity of domains of components in a single system. the language standard, Rosetta, was proposed as a means to help in such designs. An important feature in Rosetta is known as domain interaction and involves the analysis of interaction between models from domain to domain. the resulting iteration models can then be used to ensure correctness of the system at the design level. the goal of my doctoral dissertation is therefore to implement the semantics of domain interactions in Rosetta and to apply it in the specification of real world examples.
