Various methodologies are proposed in the literature to predict lithium dose or serum concentration. the authors compare the performance of a fuzzy system modeling algorithm that has been proposed with four other algorithms in terms of their performance based on serum lithium concentration prediction. the first method is the "Zetin method" proposed by M. Zetin et al. (1986), which is based on stepwise multiple linear regressions and designed specifically for lithium pharmacokinetics. Secondly, the more recent method proposed by T. Terao et al. (1999). the third method is a new formula developed from the data on hand by using stepwise multiple linear regressions. Fourth, a comparison is made with the well-known fuzzy system modeling algorithm proposed by M. Sugeno and T.A. Yasukawa (1993). the proposed method is the fifth alternative to be considered in this comparison. Published data from 30 patients (T. Terao et al. 1999) were used in the analysis. the performance of the algorithms with respect to precision as measured by the root mean square error are as follows: 0.54, 0.34, 0.36, 0.31 and 0.24 mmol/L, respectively for the Zetin method, Terao method, stepwise multiple linear regression, Sugeno-Yasukawa approach and the new algorithm.

Conventional type systems specify interfaces in terms of values and domains. We present a light-weight formalism that captures the temporal aspects of software component interfaces. Specifically, we use an automata-based language to capture both input assumptions about the order in which the methods of a component are called, and output guarantees about the order in which the component calls external methods. the formalism supports automatic compatability checks between interface models, and thus constitutes a type system for component interaction. Unlike traditional uses of automata, our formalism is based on an optimistic approach to composition, and on an alternating approach to design refinement. According to the optimistic approach, two components are compatible if there is some environment that can make them work together. According to the alternating approach, one interface refines another if it has weaker input assumptions, and stronger output guarantees. We show that these notions have game-theoretic foundations that lead to efficient algorithms for checking compatibility and refinement.

this article explores a dual approach to real-time software development. models are written in UML, as this is expected to be relatively easy and economic. then models are automatically translated into a formal notation that supports the verification of properties such as safety, utility, liveness, etc. In this way, developers can exploit the advantages of formal notations while skipping the complex and expensive formal modelling phase. the proposed appraoch is applied to the Generalised Railroad Crossing (GRC) problem, one of the best known benchmarks porposed in the literature. A UML model of the GRC is built, and then translated into TRIO (a first order temporal logic). the resulting specification properties are tested by a history checking tool which exploits the formality of TRIO. the work described here highlights the shortcomings of UML as a real-time modelling language, proposes enhancements and workarounds to overcome UML limitations, and demonstrates the viability of using UML as a front-end for a formal real-time notation. By translating the GRC model into TRIO, we also give formal semantics to some of the UML constructs.

We introduce GENOSIM, genetic optimizer for traffic micro-simulation models. GENOSIM is developed as a pilot software, employing state of the art combinatorial parametric optimization to automate the tedious task of calibrating traffic microscopic simulation models. the employed global search technique, genetic algorithms, is integrated with a dynamic traffic microscopic simulation model for the City of Toronto, Canada using Paramics microsimulation suite. the output of GENOSIM is the near-optimal values of its car-following, lane changing and dynamic routing parameters. the results obtained are very encouraging.

Most quality and software process improvement frameworks emphasize written (i.e. formal) documentation to convey recommended work practices. However, there is considerable skepticism among developers to learn from and adhere to prescribed process models. the latter are often perceived as overly "structured" or implying too much "control". Further, what is relevant knowledge has often been decided by "others"---often the quality manager. the study was carried out in the context of a national software process improvement program in Norway for small- and medium-sized companies to assess the attitude to formalized knowledge and experience sources. the results show that developers are rather skeptical at using written routines, while quality and technical managers are taking this for granted. this is an explosive combination. the conclusion is that formal routines must be supplemented by collaborative, social processes to promote effective dissemination and organizational learning. Trying to force a (well-intended) quality system down the developers' throats is both futile and demoralizing. the wider implications for quality and improvement work is that we must strike a balance between the "disciplined" or "rational" and the "creative" way of working.

Complex toolsets can be difficult to use. User interfaces can help by guiding users through the alternative choices that might be possible at any given time, but this tends to lock users into the fixed interaction models dictated by the user-interface designers. Alternatively, we propose an approach where the tool utilization model is specified by a process, written in a process definition langauge. Our approach incorporates a user-interface specification that describes how the user-interface is to respond to, or reflect, progress through the execution of the process definition. By not tightly binding the user-guidance process, the associated user-interfaces, and the toolset, it is easy to develop alternative processes that provide widely varying levels and styles of guidance and to be responsive to evolution in the processes, user interfaces, or toolset. In this paper, we describe this approach for developing process-driven user-guidance environments, a lossely coupled architecture for supporting this separation of concerns, and a generator for automatically binding the process and the user interface. We report on a case study using this approach. Although this case study used a specific process definition language and a specific toolset, the approach is applicable to other process definition languages and toolsets, provided they meet some basic, sound software engineering requirements.

software practitioners recognise the importance of realistic estimates of effort to the successful management of software projects, the Web being no exception. Having realistic estimates at an early stage in a project's life-cycle allows project managers and development organisations to manage resources effectively. Prediction is a necessary part of an effective process, whether it be authoring, design, testing or Web development as a whole. the first part of this paper describes a case study evaluation (CSE) where we measured characteristics of Web applications and the effort involved in designing and authoring those applications. the second half explores how we can use the measurements obtained to predict the effort involved in designing and authoring future Web applications. the prediction models employed were two algorithmic models - linear regression and stepwise multiple regression. Although the models generated did not have good prediction power, we believe that by using techniques that are more flexible, we will have better results.

software reliability engineering includes: software reliability measurement, which includes estimation and prediction, with the help of software reliability models established in the literature; the attributes and metrics of product design, development process, system architecture, software operational environment, and their implications on reliability; and the application of this knowledge in specifying and guiding system software architecture, development, testing, acquisition, use, and maintenance. My position is that we should attack the problem of software reliability engineering in three phases: modeling and analysis phase; design and implementation phase; and testing and measurement phase. All these phases deal with the management of software faults and failures.

In order to use fuzzy systems for knowledge discovery, we need algorithms to induce comprehensible fuzzy systems from data. the comprehensibility of a fuzzy model is mainly determined by its number of rules and variables, but also by meaningful membership functions. We discuss the value of interpretable fuzzy models for intelligent data analysis and highlight some features of the free neuro-fuzzy software NEFCLASS (NEuro-Fuzzy CLASSification) that uses special techniques to induce interpretable fuzzy classifiers from data.

the paper presents the software Measurement Analysis and Reliability Toolkit (SMART) which is a research tool for software quality modeling using case based reasoning (CBR) and other modeling techniques. Modern software systems must have high reliability. software quality models are tools for guiding reliability enhancement activities to high risk modules for maximum effectiveness and efficiency. A software quality model predicts a quality factor, such as the number of faults in a module, early in the life cycle in time for effective action. software product and process metrics can be the basis for such fault predictions. Moreover, classification models can identify fault prone modules. CBR is an attractive modeling method based on automated reasoning processes. However, to our knowledge, few CBR systems for software quality modeling have been developed. SMART addresses this area. there are currently three types of models supported by SMART: classification based on CBR, CBR classification extended with cluster analysis, and module-order models, which predict the rank-order of modules according to a quality factor. An empirical case study of a military command, control, and communications applied SMART at the end of coding. the models built by SMART had a level of accuracy that could be very useful to software developers.
