this paper presents a heuristic approach for the application of investment appraisal techniques to the software industry, in an attempt to overcome some common problems, and thus improve the quality of decision-making in new product development. A financial model, in which critical causal variables are identified, is built to analyse the impact of the software development and sales process. Non-critical variables are ascribed values based on previous data or judgmental special assumptions (several sets of such values can be used whenever sensitivity analysis is required) and ranges of critical variables leading to financial breakeven are determined. these ranges are used to evaluate attainability, points deserving review, and critical success issues for the software project. A simple model is summarily described. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

this paper introduces the HITO software tool, an integrated control system oriented to implement hierarchical control in the process industry. HITO is dedicated to control multivariable processes using model predictive control technology connected with distributed control systems running in different operating characteristics. HITO is not only limited to some particular environments, manufacturers, technologists, etc., but also suitable to those complex processes in which the conventional control does not allow an efficient manipulation of control variables. Several modules are available in a single platform: process identification, predictive control, economic variables optimisation, simulation, expert systems in supervision and diagnostics.

the propensity of a pipeline to develop lateral deflection due to severe service conditions (high pressure/high temperature), the definition of appropriate mitigation measures to control the development of excessive bending deformations, both can be analyzed by means of simplified analytical tools instead of using more sophisticated FEM analysis. the main advantage of using analytical predictivemodels is that simple relationships correlate pipe response to main structural parameters. In HOTPIPE Project, effort has been dedicated to the development of simplified procedures suitable for analyzing the post buckling configuration of a pipeline subject to both isolated buckling modes and in presence of a random sequence of buckling activators possibly involving complex pipeline configuration (expansion loops, crossings, intervention works, etc.). Particular attention has been dedicated to localization of thermal expansion in one single buckle in presence of random and regular/purpose made sequence of imperfections/deviations from a rectilinear axis.

this work presents and discusses a specific new methodology for designing flammable and toxic gas detection systems, based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). the results are discussed based on the experience obtained withthe design of three Semi-submersible Platforms and three FPSOs, on more than four years of practical designs. the process begins with a Risk Analysis, where the possible points of leakage are identified and selected, based on the associated frequency and initial estimation of the potential severity. Analyzing the gas flow, it is determined the chemical composition and physical properties, the source strength and associated (process) leakage detection apparatus, like pressure and flow sensors and its set points. Installation and environment around it are modeled by numerical software, based on finite element method, where airflow is determined, for different wind directions and intensities. the gas from each leakage selected is introduced in airflows, and the spatial distribution of gas concentration is calculated. Superposing all concentrations it is possible to choose the best position for the detector, assuring that all leakage scenarios will be identified. A cost-benefit analysis verifies if the reliability and redundancy degrees are adequate. Finally, a comparison withthe traditional approach of design is done for a semi-submersible platform, with emphasis on safety aspects as well as difficulties and limitations expected with both analyses.

A previously formulated [A. Bouzerdoum, D. Filippidis, and V. Purl, 1998) forward-observer (FO) decision-making (DM) model is generalized using global mathematical analysis, optimized (physically and physiologically) and integrated using a computer algebra system (CAS) for application into live training and combat operation (CO). the global geometro-dynamical FO analysis includes: designing the phase-space manifold of the FO's action, the FO's DM system, CO dynamics as visualized by the FO, an integrated FO's DM-CO project, and the problem of chaos in the global DM-CO project. the FO's CAS contains active Mathematica notebooks for the evaluation and simulation of equations formulated in the global mathematical analysis. this includes three original packages: DM-CAS (applied for prediction of the fraction of casualties), CO simulation, and integrated DM-CO simulation.

this paper proposes a text-dependent speaker identification system applied to thai language. Isolated digits 0-9 and their concatenations are used for speaking text. Linear prediction coefficients (LPC) are extracted and formed as feature vectors represented each speech signal. Dynamic time warping (DTW) is used to measure distances between referenced and evaluated vectors. these distances, indicating nearness of unknown vectors to references, incorporated withthe K-nearest neighbor (KNN) decision technique are used to decide who possesses those unknown vectors. the experimental results have shown that the best identification rate for a single digit is 95.83% and the highest rate for concatenated digits of top-3, top-5, and top-7 are 98.75%, 100%, and 99.20%, respectively.

the concatenation of failure rate functions results in point processes modelsthat need not possess the independent increments, or lack of memory feature, of Poisson processes. Processes having a memory are more realistic as compared to those that do not, and as a consequence provide a credible framework for tracking reliability and predicting failure times. the purpose of this paper is to propose and to describe a model for software reliability based on this paradigm. the proposed model is adaptive, can explain empirically observed phenomena, and outperforms the predictive ability of its competitors. the model and its inferential mechanism are complex, but software to implement it, with ease, is available.

A PC window-based computer program named UWFROST was developed for flexible pavements to predict the timing and magnitude of permissible overloads during frozen periods and weight restrictions during spring thaw. Six theoretical and empirical models are integrated and friendly graphic-user-interfaces are implemented. the UWFROST requires a minimum inputs from the users by providing appropriate default historical meteorology patterns and soil properties. Modeling results show that UWFROST can successfully simulate the field conditions and is capable of predicting seasonal pavement capacity in the future. these features of the UWFROST program provide highway engineers an effective means to scientifically exercise seasonal highway load restrictions.

Since the emergence of object technology organizations have accumulated a tremendous amount of object-oriented (OO) code. Instead of continuing to recreate components similar to existing artifacts, and considering the rising costs of development, many organizations would like to decrease software development costs and cycle time by reusing existing OO components. this paper proposes an experiment to verify three hypotheses about the impact of three internal characteristics (inheritance, coupling and complexity) of OO applications on reusability this verification is done through a machine-learning approach (C4.5 algorithm and windowing technique). Two kinds of results are produced : (I) for each hypothesis (characteristic), a predictive model is built using a set of metrics derived from this characteristic, and (2) for each predictive model, we measure its completeness, correctness, and global accuracy.
the objective of this paper is to build and develop a software package for simulating an ultrasonic ranging system, in such a way that the data can be integrated in an optical scanning system. In achieving the objecti...
