With the rise of online learning, many novice tutors lack experience engaging students remotely. We introduce TutorUp, a Large Language Model (LLM)-based system that enables novice tutors to practice engagement strategies with simulated students through scenario-based training. Based on a formative study involving two surveys (N₁ = 86, N₂ = 102) on student engagement challenges, we summarize scenarios that mimic real teaching situations. To enhance immersion and realism, we employ a prompting strategy that simulates dynamic online learning dialogues. TutorUp provides immediate and asynchronous feedback by referencing tutor-students online session dialogues and evidence-based teaching strategies from learning science literature. In a within-subject evaluation (N = 16), participants rated TutorUp significantly higher than a baseline system without simulation capabilities regarding effectiveness and usability. Our findings suggest that TutorUp provides novice tutors with more effective training to learn and apply teaching strategies to address online student engagement challenges. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Community-collaborative approaches to technology research promise a more just, equitable, and societally impactful future for computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW). But how can we ensure that CSCW builds knowledge with communities as meaningful partners, rather than conducting research activities on them? And what would it take for our research activities to go a step further, with the aim of helping communities work towards alternative social structures and counter harmful structural oppression? With growing interest in community-collaborative approaches (CCA) in CSCW among both academic and industry institutions, it is time to reflect upon the field's history of these forms of engagement to develop pathways for the future. This interactive workshop draws from an expert roundtable featuring CSCW and human-computer interaction (HCI) researchers with a collectively rich wealth of knowledge on enacting, critiquing, and navigating community-based research. Together, we explore the structural challenges of CCA for communities, research institutions, and individual researchers, with an explicit focus on how the values of computing research do and do not align with what is needed for truly community-collaborative work. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

The integration of principles such as transparency and auditability in AI-systems is a challenging endeavour. The demand for guiding concepts is to be not too high-level and not too specific at the same time. In this paper, I will introduce design patterns as a promising method to meet this demand and as a guidance for the implementation of transparency and auditability in sociotechnical AI-systems. This will include the history of design patterns in urban planning and software engineering, as well as their distinguishing features. In extension to this, I outline a pattern approach for responsible AI-systems in a democratic society. This includes a sketch of possible design patterns for transparent and auditable AI-systems. Some early challenges and open questions are discussed at the end, together with the conclusion. © 2021 Owner/Author.

In this keynote address I will contrast the residue of structured methods in Software engineering, (not yet fully purged by agile practices) with the realities of creative design work (as evidenced in a half century of consistent empirical research). Examples of this residue, which obstructs innovation, include sequence, separated poorly interfaced phases, closed windows, premature overspecification, and prioritising procedure over design quality. Creative studio-based practices avoid these by coalescing concurrent unique progressions of design work that deliver unexpected innovations through generous creative confidence. Despite continuous empirical confirmation of the effectiveness of lightly managed creative practices, they remain unattractive within engineering fields that value control, measurement, systematic rigour, certainty, and predictability of outcomes and resources. A reluctance to relax on these values and accept trust, vision, opportunistic confidence, uncertainty, and unpredictability is understandable. Despite the highly creative insights and framings that underpin outstanding science and engineering work, scientific values focus more on validation than on conception and imagination. We need to complement scientific and engineering values with proven studio-based creative practices. This involves accepting multi-perspective concurrent engineering practices that are progressed by strategic vision, continuous connections across perspectives, critical reflection, and systematic tracking of the status of design work. In this keynote summary, I briefly introduce key aspects of both concurrent unique progressions of design work and the exercise of generous creative confidence, supported by examples of novel worth-focused approaches and resources that can support strategic creative approaches to innovation for interactive digital artefacts. © 2022 Owner/Author.

Nearly 20 years ago, Gaver et al. introduced ambiguity as a design resource, proposing tactics to reflect everyday uncertainty into interactive systems. This approach is especially relevant for self-tracking wearables, which often obscure the inherent ambiguity of system design and tracked phenomena with seemingly clear, prescriptive data and insights. Although scholars recognize the importance of ambiguity, its practical application in the design process remains underexplored. To address this, we conducted a two-week workshop with 60 designers, examining the application of Gaver et al.'s tactics into 11 design concepts, and performed interviews with 16 participants. Our findings reveal eight relevant ambiguity tactics for self-tracking and offer insights into participants' experiences with designing using ambiguity. We discuss prescription and overlooked ambiguity as levers for the operationalization of ambiguity, the potential benefits and downsides of ambiguity tactics for users, future directions for HCI research and practice, and the study limitations. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This one-day hybrid workshop builds on previous feminist CSCW workshops to explore feminist theoretical and methodological approaches that have provided us with useful tools to see things differently and make space for change. Since its inception over a decade ago, feminist HCI has progressed from the margins to mainstream HCI, with numerous references in the literature. Feminist HCI has also evolved to incorporate other critical HCI practices such as Queer HCI, participatory design, and speculative design. While feminist approaches have grown in popularity and become mainstream, it is getting more difficult to distinguish the feminist emancipatory core from other attempts of developing and improving society in various ways. In this workshop, we therefore want to revisit our feminist roots, where theory is a liberatory and creative practice, motivated by affect, curiosity, and wonder. From this standpoint, we consider which of our feminist tools can make a significant difference today, in a highly datafied world. The goal of this workshop is to;1) create an inventory of feminist theories and concepts that have had an impact on our work as designers, educators, researchers, and activists;2) develop a feminist toolbox for the CSCW community to strengthen our feminist literacy. © 2023 Owner/Author.

In this paper we describe SeqCheck, a model checking tool which allows us to investigate if certain properties hold for an interactive system. These properties allow us to determine if the interaction sequence model of an interactive system's overlap component behaves as expected. We describe the properties we have defined for this overlap component and then demonstrate the use of SeqCheck to identify when these do not hold. © 2020 acm.

The development and use of intelligent agents are currently growing vertiginously. This growth has raised awareness of big technology companies that launched platforms that ease chatbot development. However, chatbots still fail to meet users' social expectations associated with cultural values imbued during the chatbot development (concerned or not with anthropomorphic topics). In literature, nowadays, there is a lack of research on culture in chatbot building platforms, primarily focusing on non-programmers. This research investigates interactive resources for cultural adaptation on the Blip Builder platform based on Semiotic engineering. We evaluate the Blip communicability using the Semiotic Inspection Method combined with the Cultural Viewpoint Metaphors, followed by an autoethnography step in the design process of a conversational agent based on Omotenashi, a Japanese cultural characteristic. The main results indicate that the platform offers opportunities that enable cultural adaptation, mainly improving the adaptation of the chatbot behavior to the Omotenashi properties. But also convey some barriers for cultural expression.

This tutorial provides an overview and a practical experience on task models based engineering of interactive systems. It highlights how the recent advances in task modelling techniques can be exploited to design, develop and assess interactive systems. We present, from an engineering perspective and using examples from industrial case studies, how task models can support the design, development and evaluation of interactive systems. Furthermore, half of the tutorial focuses on the process of customizing task modelling notations for specific engineering needs and on its application using the tool supported HAMSTERS-XL notation. © 2020 Owner/Author.
