Given the increase in robotic systems for the household, it is imperative to design the expressive modes of these systems, that in turn engender likability, animacy, acceptance, and trust. This paper approaches this problem by proposing a design methodology that can be used to abstract archetypal characters across the system, including form factor, user instructions, and interactive modalities. This approach uses Laban Movement Analysis paired with the Kansei engineering iterative design approach to dissect movement and visual traits of archetypal characters and marry them to features of the robot. These character traits are explored in a product, channel, consumer framework and are realized through interface elements, such as color, animated eyes, and character specific motion profiles. Finally, the use of priming using familiar characters from popular culture as a means to enhance the recognition of character traits is explored. Results show that users associated traits specific to each character archetype that were consistent with the intended design and that an aggregate measure of interaction success went up with character priming. This was bolstered in the priming cases, where users rated these traits more strongly. Thus, this methodology serves as a tool to create meaningful design variations to robotic systems using character archetypes, allowing us to design user-specific personality traits and interactive elements.

Interface designers often use screenshot images of example designs as building blocks for new designs. Since images are unstructured and hard to edit, designers typically reconstruct screenshots with vector graphics tools in order to reuse or edit parts of the design. Unfortunately, this reconstruction process is tedious and slow. We present Rewire, an interactive system that helps designers leverage example screenshots. Rewire automatically infers a vector representation of screenshots where each UI component is a separate object with editable shape and style properties. Based on this representation, the system provides three design assistance modes that help designers reuse or redraw components of the example design. The results from our quantitative and user evaluations demonstrate that Rewire can generate accurate vector representations of interface screenshots found in the wild and that design assistance enables users to reconstruct and edit example designs more efficiently compared to a baseline design tool.

Habitual behavior at work can be beneficial because it allows people to perform their tasks more automatically and with less cognitive load. On the downside, habitual work behavior can foster inefficient work strategies as it is executed with lower levels of awareness and relatively rigidly. We propose the development of an interactive system that can help users to develop beneficial habits and change unwanted ones to reach a target workflow. To achieve this goal, first, we must collect specific information of the users' current and target habits. We do this with the help of BPMN diagrams, which are then transformed to reference nets for analysis. In this form, the current and target diagrams are compared to find similarities and differences, which will guide the interactive system. The workflows, described as reference nets, can then be easily embedded into the proposed interactive system, as such description is formally described and is executable.
