Automotive HMI design is driven by systematic model based user engineering methods focusing on traceability and functional validation. User-centered design processes can open up the design space to discover new creative design solutions whereas model-based engineering methods offer a rigorous design derivation process. We present Konect, a user-centered design derivation process that fosters creativity and also ensures a systematic design derivation to end up with new interface designs that are optimized for correct and fast readability. Five Human Factor Experts applied the method and ended up with 5 creative and very different design results. In a follow-up experiment with 33 car drivers, we figured out that all designs could be perceived faster and more frequently correct than automotive interfaces for the same assistant system that have been designed with other design methods.

In this paper, we introduce the MVIC pattern for creating multidevice and multimodal interfaces. We discuss the advantages provided by introducing a new component to the MVC pattern for those interfaces which must adapt to different devices and modalities. The proposed solution is based on an input model defining equivalent and complementary sequence of inputs for the same interaction. In addition, we discuss Djestit, a javascript library which allows creating multidevice and multimodal input models for web applications, applying the aforementioned pattern. The library supports the integration of multiple devices (Kinect 2, Leap Motion, touchscreens) and different modalities (gestural, vocal and touch).

This paper presents a design space for exploring design options of adaptive graphical menus based on Bertin's eight visual variables: position, size, shape, value, color, orientation, texture, and motion. In order to transfoun a traditional (static) menu into an adaptive one, at least one visual variable should be exploited to convey which menu items have been promoted or demoted depending on five characteristics: select, associative, quantitative, order, and length. The paper reviews selected adaptive menu interaction techniques belonging to each of these variables, classifies them according to the variables and characteristics and suggests not yet explored adaptive menu designs. It then defines four stability properties depending on which variables remain constant after adaptivity. A supporting software for prototyping the rendering of graphical adaptive menus is then introduced.

Ensuring the effectiveness factor of usability consists in ensuring that the application allows users to reach their goals and perform their tasks. One of the few means for reaching this goal relies on task analysis and proving the compatibility between the interactive application and its task models. Synergistic execution enables the validation of a system against its task model by co-executing the system and the task model and comparing the behavior of the system against what is prescribed in the model. This allows a tester to explore scenarios in order to detect deviations between the two behaviors. Manual exploration of scenarios does not guarantee a good coverage of the analysis. To address this, we resort to model based testing (MBT) techniques to automatically generate scenarios for automated synergistic execution. To achieve this, we generate, from the task model, scenarios to be co-executed over the task model and the system. During this generation step we explore the possibility of including considerations about user error in the analysis. The automation of the execution of the scenarios closes the process. We illustrate the approach with an example

A very important aspect of any interactive system is its ease of use. Advances in usability, online assistance, help (e.g. contextual help), interaction styles and design techniques (e.g. user-centered design) try to facilitate the use of these systems. However, users still face challenges in accomplishing tasks (e.g. they still have to learn the required steps in order to accomplish a task). The fact that an increasing number of GUIs are frequently being updated increases the challenges faced by the users. This paper presents DemoHelp, a tool that enables the addition of live demonstration-based help to existing interactivesystems. The tool enhances the ease of use and learning of interactivesystems. Based on picture-driven computing and task automation the tool reduces the challenges faced by users when trying to learn how to perform a task. The work is illustrated by means of an example.

engineering and Creative Design have overlapping traditions, although the latter is four orders of magnitude older than the former. The former has been more normative about design processes than the latter. Norms have differed, with creative design often celebrating the hand-made, and engineering typically exploiting mechanisation. In contrast, norms did converge with scientifically motivated approaches to creative design (e.g., Bauhaus, Ulm, Design Methods movement). The underlying values of engineering and Creative Design have thus both converged and diverged. Empirical facts however are overwhelmingly convergent, but with only partial evidence of the rational idealised linear ideals of engineering Design being met. Regardless of the craft space, reflective creative design, where design materials talk back to co-evolve both problem and solution framing, dominates when complete processes are studied. Agile development methodologies are a first step in moving away from the impossibility of Rational Idealised Linear engineering Design (RILED) towards the realities of creative reflective practice. In this talk, I will present a tactical reframing of engineering ideals within the realities of creative reflective design. engineering ideals do have potentially worthwhile roles place in creative axiological practices, but these are to support, not to direct. In this talk I will use Abstract Design Situations to contrast the major design paradigms and empirical studies to expose their limitations as a basis for outlining some worth-focused approaches to Interaction Design that can exploit engineering rigour within the realities of creative reflective work contexts.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) connect the virtual world of software and services with the real world of humans, objects and things. Sensors and actuators enable the detection and manipulation of physical and virtual properties. However, ubiquitous access for controlling and monitoring of all CPS components is a major challenge due to the complexity of CPS numerous control options, devices and high volumes of data. We present a user-friendly mobile control center for CPS. It allows non-expert users to ubiquitously access all sensors, actuators, processes and more complex components represented by service robots. We demonstrate the control center in the smart home domain.

Children with autism with sensorimotor impairments found difficult to control their movements when responding to sensory stimuli. Neurologic music therapy, combining music and movement helps individuals with disabilities to better control their movements when following audible cues. In this paper, we present the iterative design process that led to the BendableSound prototype. BendableSound is a fabric-based multi-touch surface aimed at supporting neurologic music therapy sessions allowing children to practice movement patterns while playing music when touching the fabric We discuss the results of a preliminary evaluation showing physiologists-teachers caring for children with autism found BendableSound "easy to use" and "useful". We close discussing directions for future work.
