We introduce SPECTRA, a novel pipeline for personalizable sound recognition designed to understand DHH users' needs when collecting audio data, creating a training dataset, and reasoning about the quality of a model. To evaluate the prototype, we recruited 12 DHH participants who trained personalized models for their homes. We investigated waveforms, spectrograms, interactive clustering, and data annotating to support DHH users throughout this workflow, and we explored the impact of a hands-on training session on their experience and attitudes toward sound recognition tools. Our findings reveal the potential for clustering visualizations and waveforms to enrich users' understanding of audio data and refinement of training datasets, along with data annotations to promote varied data collection. We provide insights into DHH users' experiences and perspectives on personalizing a sound recognition pipeline. Finally, we share design considerations for future interactive systems to support this population. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Critical thinking skills are increasingly important for comprehending our data-rich society. While museums provide data for discussion, visitors may not naturally question data in such displays due to the inherent authority of a museum. To investigate what factors can help visitors recognize bias in data, we interviewed visitors after they interacted with an augmented reality data map in an interactive data exhibition. Here, we present a qualitative analysis of fifteen semi-structured interviews with visitors who engaged with mapped data from the citizen science platform iNaturalist. The study revealed that 47% of participants were able to recognize bias, and familiarity was found to be a significant factor in this ability. We propose a three-layer framework to understand the cognitive processes of bias recognition in informal learning settings and apply this framework to our data to inform future work for designing displays to promote critical engagement with data in free-choice learning contexts. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Contact-free remote sensing is showing increasing potential for real-life use, especially for screening applications (e.g., thermal cameras to detect fever). We investigated the feasibility of estimating pulse transit time (PTT) - a marker known to be highly correlated with blood pressure - in a remote way from a single measuring site, using just a single modified RGB camera. We replaced the default infrared (IR) filter with a narrow-band triple-bandpass filter allowing us to remotely measure the PTT between green and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Such a filter minimizes the inter-channel influence and band overlap, while also leveraging the non-traditional NIR information. We based the PTT measurements on the fact that different wavelengths penetrate to different skin layers. This allowed for the capture of slightly delayed blood pulses corresponding to different wavelengths and skins depth. Our early observations in 5-subject small-scale experiment show relatively consistent temporal delays between the waveforms from different wavelengths in accordance with expectations and related work. These early results show promise for further research in remote multi-wavelength PTT and blood pressure (BP) estimation, while also highlighting important fundamental and technical challenges to be considered. © 2022 Owner/Author.

We investigate the connection between the complexity of nonlocal games and the arithmetical hierarchy, a classification of languages according to the complexity of arithmetical formulas defining them. It was recently shown by Ji, Natarajan, Vidick, Wright and Yuen that deciding whether the (finite-dimensional) quantum value of a nonlocal game is 1 or at most 1/2 is complete for the class Sigma(1) (i.e., RE). A result of Slofstra implies that deciding whether the commuting operator value of a nonlocal game is equal to 1 is complete for the class pi 1 (i.e., coRE). We prove that deciding whether the quantum value of a two-player nonlocal game is exactly equal to 1 is complete for pi 2;this class is in the second level of the arithmetical hierarchy and corresponds to formulas of the form "for all x there exists y phi(x,y)". This shows that exactly computing the quantum value is strictly harder than approximating it, and also strictly harder than computing the commuting operator value (either exactly or approximately). We explain how results about the complexity of nonlocal games all follow in a unified manner from a technique known as compression. At the core of our pi 2-completeness result is a new "gapless" compression theorem that holds for both quantum and commuting operator strategies. All previous works only study the setting of finite-dimensional quantum strategies;ours is the first to study compression of games in the commuting operator setting. Our compression theorem yields as a byproduct an alternative proof of Slofstra's result that the set of quantum correlations is not closed. We also show how a "gap-preserving" compression theorem for commuting operator strategies would imply that approximating the commuting operator value is complete for pi 1.

We designed a framework to generalize the development of applications with UI elements distributed across co-located devices. The framework is comprised of diverse components in order to deal with the complexity of such a task, including: Authentication and authorization services;a broker to sync information across multiple application instances;background services that gather the capabilities of the devices;an indoor positioning system to determine when devices are close to each other;and a library which helps integrating Web applications with the broker, determining which components to show based on UI requirements and device capabilities, and custom elements to manage the distribution of the UI components and the multiple UI application states. Process-based learning is crucial for the transmission of intangible cultural heritage, especially in complex arts like Chinese calligraphy, where mastering techniques cannot be achieved by merely observing the final work. To explore the challenges faced in calligraphy heritage transmission, we conducted semi-structured interviews (N=8) as a formative study. Our findings indicate that the lack of calligraphy instructors and tools makes it difficult for students to master brush techniques, and teachers struggle to convey the intricate details and rhythm of brushwork. To address this, we collaborated with calligraphy instructors to develop an educational tool that integrates writing process capture and visualization, showcasing the writing rhythm, hand force, and brush posture. Through empirical studies conducted in multiple teaching workshops, we evaluated the system's effectiveness with teachers (N=4) and students (N=12). The results show that the tool significantly enhances teaching efficiency and aids learners in better understanding brush techniques. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). UI prototyping often involves iterating and blending elements from examples such as screenshots and sketches, but current tools offer limited support for incorporating these examples. Inspired by the cognitive process of conceptual blending, we introduce a novel UI workflow that allows developers to rapidly incorporate diverse aspects from design examples into work-in-progress UIs. We prototyped this workflow as Misty. Through a exploratory first-use study with 14 frontend developers, we assessed Misty's effectiveness and gathered feedback on this workflow. Our findings suggest that Misty's conceptual blending workflow helps developers kickstart creative explorations, flexibly specify intent in different stages of prototyping, and inspires developers through serendipitous UI blends. Misty demonstrates the potential for tools that blur the boundaries between developers and designers. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Community-collaborative approaches to technology research promise a more just, equitable, and societally impactful future for computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW). But how can we ensure that CSCW builds knowledge with communities as meaningful partners, rather than conducting research activities on them? And what would it take for our research activities to go a step further, with the aim of helping communities work towards alternative social structures and counter harmful structural oppression? With growing interest in community-collaborative approaches (CCA) in CSCW among both academic and industry institutions, it is time to reflect upon the field's history of these forms of engagement to develop pathways for the future. This interactive workshop draws from an expert roundtable featuring CSCW and human-computer interaction (HCI) researchers with a collectively rich wealth of knowledge on enacting, critiquing, and navigating community-based research. Together, we explore the structural challenges of CCA for communities, research institutions, and individual researchers, with an explicit focus on how the values of computing research do and do not align with what is needed for truly community-collaborative work. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Active transportation is a valuable tool to prevent some of the most common causes of mortality worldwide, but is severely underutilized. The primary factors preventing cyclist adoption are safety concerns, specifically, the fear of collision from automobiles. One solution to address this concern is to direct cyclists to known safe routes to minimize risk and stress, thus making cycling more approachable. However, few localized safety priors are available, hindering safety based routing. Specifically, road user behavior is unknown. To address this issue, we develop a novel handlebar attachment to passively monitor the proximity of passing cars as a an indicator of cycling safety along historically traveled routes. We deploy this sensor with 15 experienced cyclists in a 2 month longitudinal study to source a citywide map of car passing distance. We then compare this signal to both historic collisions and perceived safety reported by experienced and inexperienced cyclists. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
