The general purpose mathematical programming systems have greatly changed in the last few years and the aim of such codes is no longer to give access to an efficient algorithm but to integrate the solution of linear programming problems into a loop including the generation of the problem, its solution, its post optimal analysis and the edition of an output report of the results. The link between all these operations is done through a so-called control language *** these aspects are more or less the same from one code to another but we think that new approaches should be brought into their design, organization, and implementation. The development cost of such programs being very high, usually in the order of 15 to 30 man years, it is necessary to provide facilities in order to:- offer suitable users and programming languages;- have a modular design;- handle memory allocation in a semi-optimal way;- make modifications and extensions easier; and- facilitate day to day programmers tasks.I shall present, in the following pages, the objectives that we had in mind when we began to implement these facilities within the large scale mathematical programming system OPHELIE 2 which we developed for the CDC 6600.

The authors describe a model for, and an implementation of, production-based synthesis of hardware description language (HDL) code in which the overall structure of the resultant machine is derived from a hierarchy of sub-machine descriptions, each represented by a production. The production-based specification (PBS) consists of productions annotated with HDL action code, and forms the input to a design tool which outputs procedural HDL tailored for hardware synthesis. Due to the concise nature of this form of specification, the technique can save enormous labor in the construction of procedural specifications for these machines. Novel aspects of this research include the compilation of a PBS with HDL action clauses into synthesizable procedural HDL and the approach to specification of machine behavior in the event of exceptional conditions.< >

The authors present an overview of the application-driven design automation system (ADAS) for microprocessor design. ADAS accepts a specification of the instruction set architecture as input, and produces both layout specified in Caltech Intermediate Form, and a reorder table for the language compiler as output. The system spans language design, compiler design, instruction set design, microarchitecture, and VLSI implementation. Another goal of the project is to determine the feasibility of applying formal methodology to design automation and the usefulness of formal syntax and semantics in defining the meaning of specifications. The system implementation on a real industrial example, the TDY-43 processor, is discussed.< >

Given the large communication overheads characteristic of modern parallel machines, optimizations that eliminate, hide or parallelize communication may improve the performance of parallel computations. This paper describes our experience automatically applying communication optimizations in the context of Jade, a portable, implicitly parallel programming language designed for exploiting task-level concurrency. Jade programmers start with a program written in a standard serial, imperative language, then use Jade constructs to declare how parts of the program access data. The Jade implementation uses this data access information to automatically extract the concurrency and apply communication optimizations. Jade implementations exist for both shared memory and message passing machines; each Jade implementation applies communication optimizations appropriate for the machine on which it runs. We present performance results for several Jade applications running on both a shared memory machine (the Stanford DASH machine) and a message passing machine (the Intel iPSC/860). We use these results to characterize the overall performance impact of the communication optimizations. For our application set replicating data for concurrent read access and improving the locality of the computation by placing tasks close to the data that they access are the most important optimizations. Broadcasting widely accessed data has a significant performance impact on one application; other optimizations such as concurrently fetching remote data and overlapping computation with communication have no effect.

EZ is a system that integrates traditional operating systems and programming languages into a very-high-level persistent string processing language. The authors describe the design and initial implementation of a distributed memory manager that distributes EZ's virtual address space transparently among a network of homogeneous computers. The design adapts the techniques used in recent implementation of shared virtual memory for use in EZ's persistent environment. Unlike most implementations of shared virtual memory, control information is distributed and migrates. This memory manager works in concert with a distributed mark-and-sweep garbage collector, which is also concurrent and real-time. This collector trades time for space and minimal disruption of mutators, which reduces communication costs.< >

This paper discusses the requirement for intermachine communication and how this requirement is met with APL2's cross-system shared variables. One problem encountered in the design is the mapping of APL2's cooperative peer-to-peer communication model onto a client server data transport mechanism. Another is the ability of APL2's sharing mechanism to address applications on other machines. The goal of the facility is to provide a high level of communication between applications running on different machines while introducing the minimum language extension.

A number of effective error detection tools have been built in recent years to check if a program conforms to certain design rules. An important class of design rules deals with sequences of events asso-ciated with a set of related objects. This paper presents a language called PQL (Program Query language) that allows programmers to express such questions easily in an application-specific context. A query looks like a code excerpt corresponding to the shortest amount of code that would violate a design rule. Details of the tar-get application's precise implementation are abstracted away. The programmer may also specify actions to perform when a match is found, such as recording relevant information or even correcting an erroneous execution on the *** have developed both static and dynamic techniques to find solutions to PQL queries. Our static analyzer finds all potential matches conservatively using a context-sensitive, flow-insensitive, inclusion-based pointer alias analysis. Static results are also use-ful in reducing the number of instrumentation points for dynamic analysis. Our dynamic analyzer instruments the source program to catch all violations precisely as the program runs and to optionally perform user-specified *** have implemented the techniques described in this paper and found 206 errors in 6 large real-world open-source Java applica-tions containing a total of nearly 60,000 classes. These errors are important security flaws, resource leaks, and violations of consis-tency invariants. The combination of static and dynamic analysis proves effective at addressing a wide range of debugging and pro-gram comprehension queries. We have found that dynamic analysis is especially suitable for preventing errors such as security vulner-abilities at runtime.

Tachyon Common Lisp is an efficient and portable implementation of Common Lisp 2nd Edition. The design objective of Tachyon is to apply both advanced optimization technology developed for RISC processors and Lisp optimization techniques. The compiler generates very fast codes comparable to, and sometimes faster than the code generated by UNIX C compiler. Comparing with the most widely used commercial Common Lisp, Tachyon Common Lisp compiled code is 2 times faster and the interpreter is 6 times faster than the Lisp in Gabriel benchmark suit. Tachyon Common Lisp is the fastest among the Lisp systems known to the authors.

The aim of the project is to promote object-oriented software development within the framework of management information systems. The Business Class development method is supported by an analysis workbench based on the O* method and a design workbench dedicated to the Eiffel language. The communication presents a set of mapping rules from O* specifications to an Eiffel implementation. The practical results as well as the mismatch difficulties can be translated to other object-oriented methods and languages.< >
