This paper describes a lightweight yet powerful approach for writing distributed applications using shared variables. Our approach, called SHAREHOLDER, is inspired by the flexible and intuitive model of information access common to the World Wide Web. The distributed applications targeted by our approach all share a weak consistency model and loose transaction semantics, similar to a user's model of accessing email, bulletin boards, chat rooms, etc. on the Internet. The SHAREHOLDER infrastructure has several advantages. Its highly object-oriented view of shared variables simplifies their initialization and configuration. A shared variable's distribution mechanism is specified through an associated configuration object, and the programmer does not need to write any extra code to implement the sharing mechanism. These configuration objects can be initialized at run-time, allowing tremendous flexibility in dynamic control of distribution of shared variables. Finally, the programmer can treat shared variables and local variables interchangeably, thus simplifying conversion of a serial application into a distributed application.

A major research goal for compilers and environments is the automatic derivation of tools from formal specifications. However, the formal model of the language is often inadequate; in particular, LR(k) grammars are unable to describe the natural syntax of many languages, such as C++ and Fortran, which are inherently non-deterministic. designers of batch compilers work around such limitations by combining generated components with ad hoc techniques (for instance, performing partial type and scope analysis in tandem with parsing). Unfortunately, the complexity of incremental systems precludes the use of batch solutions. The inability to generate incremental tools for important languages inhibits the widespread use of language-rich interactive *** address this problem by extending the language model itself, introducing a program representation based on parse dags that is suitable for both batch and incremental analysis. Ambiguities unresolved by one stage are retained in this representation until further stages can complete the analysis, even if the reaolution depends on further actions by the user. Representing ambiguity explicitly increases the number and variety of languages that can be analyzed incrementally using existing *** create this representation, we have developed an efficient incremental parser for general context-free grammars. Our algorithm combines Tomita's generalized LR parser with reuse of entire subtrees via state-matching. Disambiguation can occur statically, during or after parsing, or during semantic analysis (using existing incremental techniques); program errors that preclude disambiguation retsin multiple interpretations indefinitely. Our representation and analyses gain efficiency by exploiting the local nature of ambiguities: for the SPEC95 C programs, the explicit representation of ambiguity requires only 0.5% additional space and less than 1% additional time during reconstruction.

The visualization and application steering environment (VASE) provides interactive visual computing and steering for scientific and engineering programs. VASE defines an abstraction for a steerable program structure and provides tools that create and manage collections of these steerable codes. It is designed to work with existing codes written in Fortran. Based on simple annotations in the source code, VASE tools construct a high-level model of each application and enable the user to work with this model rather than at the detailed source-code level. Collections of steerable codes execute in a distributed environment. This paper describes the design objectives for VASE, its architecture, and its implementation, and illustrates its use with an example application.

Several recent studies have introduced lightweight versions of Java: reduced languages in which complex features like threads and reflection are dropped to enable rigorous arguments about key properties such as type safety. We carry this process a step further, omitting almost all features of the full language (including interfaces and even assignment) to obtain a small calculus, Featherweight Java, for which rigorous proofs are not only possible but *** Java bears a similar relation to full Java as the lambda-calculus does to languages such as ML and Haskell. It offers a similar computational “feel,” providing classes, methods, fields, inheritance, and dynamic typecasts, with a semantics closely following Java's. A proof of type safety for Featherweight Java thus illustrates many of the interesting features of a safety proof for the full language, while remaining pleasingly compact. The syntax, type rules, and operational semantics of Featherweight Java fit on one page, making it easier to understand the consequences of extensions and *** an illustration of its utility in this regard, we extend Featherweight Java with generic classes in the style of GJ (Bracha, Odersky, Stoutamire, and Wadler) and sketch a proof of type safety. The extended system formalizes for the first time some of the key features of GJ.

The current practice of mapping computations to custom hardware implementations requires programmers to assume the role of hardware designers. In tuning the performance of their hardware implementation, designers manually apply loop transformations such as loop unrolling. designers manually apply loop transformations. For example, loop unrolling is used to expose instruction-level parallelism at the expense of more hardware resources for concurrent operator evaluation. Because unrolling also increases the amount of data a computation requires, too much unrolling can lead to a memory bound implementation where resources are idle. To negotiate inherent hardware space-time trade-offs, designers must engage in an iterative refinement cycle, at each step manually applying transformations and evaluating their impact. This process is not only error-prone and tedious but also prohibitively expensive given the large search spaces and with long synthesis times. This paper describes an automated approach to hardware design space exploration, through a collaboration between parallelizing compiler technology and high-level synthesis tools. We present a compiler algorithm that automatically explores the large design spaces resulting from the application of several program transformations commonly used in application-specific hardware designs. Our approach uses synthesis estimation techniques to quantitatively evaluate alternate designs for a loop nest computation. We have implemented this design space exploration algorithm in the context of a compilation and synthesis system called DEFACTO, and present results of this implementation on five multimedia kernels. Our algorithm derives an implementation that closely matches the performance of the fastest design in the design space, and among implementations with comparable performance, selects the smallest design. Image processing pipelines combine the challenges of stencil computations and stream programs. They are composed of large graphs of different stencil stages, as well as complex reductions, and stages with global or data-dependent access patterns. Because of their complex structure, the performance difference between a naive implementation of a pipeline and an optimized one is often an order of magnitude. Efficient implementations require optimization of both parallelism and locality, but due to the nature of stencils, there is a fundamental tension between parallelism, locality, and introducing redundant recomputation of shared *** present a systematic model of the tradeoff space fundamental to stencil pipelines, a schedule representation which describes concrete points in this space for each stage in an image processing pipeline, and an optimizing compiler for the Halide image processing language that synthesizes high performance implementations from a Halide algorithm and a schedule. Combining this compiler with stochastic search over the space of schedules enables terse, composable programs to achieve state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of real image processing pipelines, and across different hardware architectures, including multicores with SIMD, and heterogeneous CPU+GPU execution. From simple Halide programs written in a few hours, we demonstrate performance up to 5x faster than hand-tuned C, intrinsics, and CUDA implementations optimized by experts over weeks or months, for image processing applications beyond the reach of past automatic compilers.

The general purpose mathematical programming systems have greatly changed in the last few years and the aim of such codes is no longer to give access to an efficient algorithm but to integrate the solution of linear programming problems into a loop including the generation of the problem, its solution, its post optimal analysis and the edition of an output report of the results. The link between all these operations is done through a so-called control language *** these aspects are more or less the same from one code to another but we think that new approaches should be brought into their design, organization, and implementation. The development cost of such programs being very high, usually in the order of 15 to 30 man years, it is necessary to provide facilities in order to:- offer suitable users and programming languages;- have a modular design;- handle memory allocation in a semi-optimal way;- make modifications and extensions easier; and- facilitate day to day programmers tasks.I shall present, in the following pages, the objectives that we had in mind when we began to implement these facilities within the large scale mathematical programming system OPHELIE 2 which we developed for the CDC 6600.

Given the large communication overheads characteristic of modern parallel machines, optimizations that eliminate, hide or parallelize communication may improve the performance of parallel computations. This paper describes our experience automatically applying communication optimizations in the context of Jade, a portable, implicitly parallel programming language designed for exploiting task-level concurrency. Jade programmers start with a program written in a standard serial, imperative language, then use Jade constructs to declare how parts of the program access data. The Jade implementation uses this data access information to automatically extract the concurrency and apply communication optimizations. Jade implementations exist for both shared memory and message passing machines; each Jade implementation applies communication optimizations appropriate for the machine on which it runs. We present performance results for several Jade applications running on both a shared memory machine (the Stanford DASH machine) and a message passing machine (the Intel iPSC/860). We use these results to characterize the overall performance impact of the communication optimizations. For our application set replicating data for concurrent read access and improving the locality of the computation by placing tasks close to the data that they access are the most important optimizations. Broadcasting widely accessed data has a significant performance impact on one application; other optimizations such as concurrently fetching remote data and overlapping computation with communication have no effect.

CORAL is a deductive database system that supports a rich declarative language, provides a wide range of evaluation methods, and allows a combination of declarative and imperative programming. The data can be persistent on disk or can reside in main-memory. We describe the architecture and implementation of *** were two important goals in the design of the CORAL architecture: (1) to integrate the different evaluation strategies in a reasonable fashion, and (2) to allow users to influence the optimization techniques used so as to exploit the full power of the CORAL implementation. A CORAL declarative program can be organized as a collection of interacting modules and this modular structure is the key to satisfying both these goals. The high level module interface allows modules with different evaluation techniques to interact in a transparent fashion. Further, users can optionally tailor the execution of a program by selecting from among a wide range of control choices at the level of each *** also has an interface with C++, and users can program in a combination of declarative CORAL, and C++ extended with CORAL primitives. A high degree of extensibility is provided by allowing C++ programmers to use the class structure of C++ to enhance the CORAL implementation.

We describe the design and implementation of the Glue-Nail database system. The Nail language is a purely declarative query language; Glue is a procedural language used for non-query activities. The two languages combined are sufficient to write a complete application. Nail and Glue code both compile into the target language IGlue. The Nail compiler uses variants of the magic sets algorithm, and supports well-founded models. Static optimization is performed by the Glue compiler using techniques that include peephole methods and data flow analysis. The IGlue code is executed by the IGlue interpreter, which features a run-time adaptive optimizer. The three optimizers each deal with separate optimization domains, and experiments indicate that an effective synergism is achieved. The Glue-Nail system is largely complete and has been tested using a suite of representative applications.
