Performance of stencil computations can be significantly improved through smart implementations that improve memory locality, computation reuse, or parallelize the computation. Unfortunately, efficient implementations are hard to obtain because they often involve non-traditional transformations, which means that they cannot be produced by optimizing the reference stencil with a compiler. In fact, many stencils are produced by code generators that were tediously handcrafted. In this paper, we show how stencil implementations can be produced with sketching. Sketching is a software synthesis approach where the programmer develops a partial implementation a sketch-and a separate specification of the desired functionality given by a reference (unoptimized) stencil. The synthesizer then completes the sketch to behave like the specification, filling in code fragments that are difficult to develop manually. Existing sketching systems work only for small finite programs, i.e., programs that can be represented as small Boolean circuits. In this paper, we develop a sketching synthesizer that works for stencil computations, a large class of programs that, unlike circuits, have unbounded inputs and outputs, as well as an unbounded number of computations. The key contribution is a reduction algorithm that turns a stencil into a circuit, allowing us to synthesize stencils using an existing sketching synthesizer.

To understand diverse natural language commands, virtual assistants today are trained with numerous labor-intensive, manually annotated sentences. This paper presents a methodology and the Genie toolkit that can handle new compound commands with significantly less manual effort. We advocate formalizing the capability of virtual assistants with a Virtual Assistant programming language (VAPL) and using a neural semantic parser to translate natural language into VAPL code. Genie needs only a small realistic set of input sentences for validating the neural model. Developers write templates to synthesize data;Genie uses crowdsourced paraphrases and data augmentation, along with the synthesized data, to train a semantic parser. We also propose design principles that make VAPL languages amenable to natural language translation. We apply these principles to revise ThingTalk, the language used by the Almond virtual assistant. We use Genie to build the first semantic parser that can support compound virtual assistants commands with unquoted free-form parameters. Genie achieves a 62% accuracy on realistic user inputs. We demonstrate Genie's generality by showing a 19% and 31% improvement over the previous state of the art on a music skill, aggregate functions, and access control.

language transformations are algorithms that take a language specification in input, and return the language specification modified. language transformations are useful for automatically adding features such as subtyping to programming languages (PLs), and for automatically deriving abstract machines. In this paper, we set forth the thesis that teaching programming languages features with the help of language transformations, in addition to the planned material, can be beneficial for students to help them deepen their understanding of the features being taught. We have conducted a study on integrating language transformations into an undergraduate PL course. We describe our study, the material that we have taught, and the exam submitted to students, and we present the results from this study. Although we refrain from drawing general conclusions on the effectiveness of language transformations, this paper offers encouraging data. We also offer this paper to inspire similar studies.

The real numbers are pervasive, both in daily life, and in mathematics. Students spend much time studying their properties. Yet computers and programming languages generally provide only an approximation geared towards performance, at the expense of many of the nice properties we were taught in high school. Although this is entirely appropriate for many applications, particularly those that are sensitive to arithmetic performance in the usual sense, we argue that there are others where it is a poor choice. If arithmetic computations and result are directly exposed to human users who are not floating point experts, floating point approximations tend to be viewed as bugs. For applications such as calculators, spreadsheets, and various verification tasks, the cost of precision sacrifices is high, and the performance benefit is often not critical. We argue that previous attempts to provide accurate and understandable results for such applications using the recursive reals were great steps in the right direction, but they do not suffice. Comparing recursive reals diverges if they are equal. In many cases, comparison of numbers, including equal ones, is both important, particularly in simple cases, and intractable in the general case. We propose an API for a real number type that explicitly provides decidable equality in the easy common cases, in which it is often unnatural not to. We describe a surprisingly compact and simple implementation in detail. The approach relies heavily on classical number theory results. We demonstrate the utility of such a facility in two applications: testing floating point functions, and to implement arithmetic in Google's Android calculator application.

Modern field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) have recently powered high-profile efficiency gains in systems from datacenters to embedded devices by offering ensembles of heterogeneous, reconfigurable hardware units. programming stacks for FPGAs, however, are stuck in the past-they are based on traditional hardware languages, which were appropriate when FPGAs were simple, homogeneous fabrics of basic programmable primitives. We describe Reticle, a new low-level abstraction for FPGA programming that, unlike existing languages, explicitly represents the special-purpose units available on a particular FPGA device. Reticle has two levels: a portable intermediate language and a target-specific assembly language. We show how to use a standard instruction selection approach to lower intermediate programs to assembly programs, which can be both faster and more effective than the complex metaheuristics that existing FPGA toolchains use. We use Reticle to implement linear algebra operators and coroutines and find that Reticle compilation runs up to 100 times faster than current approaches while producing comparable or better run-time and utilization.

Recent shared-memory parallel computer systems offer the exciting possibility of customizing memory coherence protocols to fit an application's semantics and sharing patterns. Custom protocols have been used to achieve message-passing performance - while retaining the convenient programming model of a global address space - and to implement high-level language constructs. Unfortunately, coherence protocols written in a conventional language such as C are difficult to write, debug, understand, or modify. This paper describes Teapot, a small, domain-specific language for writing coherence protocols. Teapot uses continuations to help reduce the complexity of writing protocols. Simple static analysis in the Teapot compiler eliminates much of the overhead of continuations and results in protocols that run nearly as fast as hand-written C code. A Teapot specification can be compiled both to an executable coherence protocol and to input for a model checking system, which permits the specification to be verified. We report our experiences coding and verifying several protocols written in Teapot, along with measurements of the overhead incurred by writing a protocol in a higher-level language.

This paper presents a novel approach to bug-finding analysis and an implementation of that approach. Our goal is to find as many serious bugs as possible. To do so, we designed a flexible, easy-to-use extension language for specifying analyses and an efficient algorithm for executing these extensions. The language, metal, allows the users of our system to specify a broad class of analyses in terms that resemble the intuitive description of the rules that they check. The system, xgcc, executes these analyses efficiently using a context-sensitive, interprocedural analysis. Our prior work has shown that the approach described in this paper is effective: it has successfully found thousands of bugs in real systems code. This paper describes the underlying system used to achieve these results. We believe that our system is an effective framework for deploying new bug-finding analyses quickly and easily.

Reactive programming improves the design of reactive applications by relocating the logic for managing dependencies between dependent values away from the application logic to the language implementation. Many distributed applications are reactive. Yet, existing change propagation algorithms are not suitable in a distributed setting. We propose Distributed REScala, a reactive language with a change propagation algorithm that works without centralized knowledge about the topology of the dependency structure among reactive values and avoids unnecessary propagation of changes, while retaining safety guarantees (glitch freedom). Distributed REScala enables distributed reactive programming, bringing the benefits of reactive programming to distributed applications. We demonstrate the enabled design improvements by a case study. We also empirically evaluate the performance of our algorithm in comparison to other algorithms in a simulated distributed setting.

In this paper, we propose a multi-modal synthesis technique for automatically constructing regular expressions (regexes) from a combination of examples and natural language. Using multiple modalities is useful in this context because natural language alone is often highly ambiguous, whereas examples in isolation are often not sufficient for conveying user intent. Our proposed technique first parses the English description into a so-called hierarchical sketch that guides our programming-by-example (PBE) engine. Since the hierarchical sketch captures crucial hints, the PBE engine can leverage this information to both prioritize the search as well as make useful deductions for pruning the search space. We have implemented the proposed technique in a tool called Regel and evaluate it on over three hundred regexes. Our evaluation shows that Regel achieves 80% accuracy whereas the NLP-only and PBE-only baselines achieve 43% and 26% respectively. We also compare our proposed PBE engine against an adaptation of AlphaRegex, a state-of-the-art regex synthesis tool, and show that our proposed PBE engine is an order of magnitude faster, even if we adapt the search algorithm of AlphaRegex to leverage the sketch. Finally, we conduct a user study involving 20 participants and show that users are twice as likely to successfully come up with the desired regex using Regel compared to without it.

Automatic parallelization is a promising strategy to improve application performance in the multicore era. However, common programming practices such as the reuse of data structures introduce artificial constraints that obstruct automatic parallelization. Privatization relieves these constraints by replicating data structures, thus enabling scalable parallelization. Prior privatization schemes are limited to arrays and scalar variables because they are sensitive to the layout of dynamic data structures. This work presents Privateer, the first fully automatic privatization system to handle dynamic and recursive data structures, even in languages with unrestricted pointers. To reduce sensitivity to memory layout, Privateer speculatively separates memory objects. Privateer's lightweight runtime system validates speculative separation and speculative privatization to ensure correct parallel execution. Privateer enables automatic parallelization of general-purpose C/C++ applications, yielding a geomean whole-program speedup of 11.4x over best sequential execution on 24 cores, while non-speculative parallelization yields only 0.93x.
