We present the design and implementation of a dimensionality checking system in Ada 2012. The system is implemented in the GNAT compiler, and performs compile-time checks to verify the dimensional consistency of physical computations. The system allows the user to define his own system of units, and imposes no run-time changes nor multiple compilation passes on the user. © 2012 acm.

Modelling and simulation languages are evolving rapidly to support modelling of systems of ever increasing size and complexity. A relatively recent development in the area of physical modelling is the noncausal modelling languages. They support a declarative, highly modular modelling approach, promoting the reuse of components. Modelica is a prime example of this class of languages. However, the mainstream representatives of this class of languages provide limited support for higher-order modelling and structurally dynamic systems. Moreover, the semantics of this class of languages remains a relatively unexplored area. Functional Hybrid Modelling (FHM) is a novel approach to noncausal, hybrid modelling that aims to address these concerns. In this paper, we give a semantics to the discrete part of a simple FHM language expressed in dependent type theory. We use Normalisation by Evaluation to produce a type-preserving and terminating normalisation procedure, the latter property being particularly important for FHM as highly structurally dynamic systems are supported by computing new system configurations during simulation. Furthermore, our implementation has been carefully structured to allow continuous aspects of the semantics to be described separately, in whatever way is deemed appropriate, while retaining the ability to describe precisely how a system evolves in response to discrete events. In this paper, we describe a system, Hylian, for construction of a language-complete abstract semantic graph that can be used for statement-level analysis, both static and dynamic, of a C++ application. We begin by extending the GNU gcc parser to generate parse trees in XML format for each of the compilation units in a C++ application. We then provide verification that the generated parse trees are structurally equivalent to the code in the original C++ application. We use the generated parse trees, together with an augmented version of the gcc test suite, to recover a grammar for the C++ dialect that we parse. We then construct the Abstract Semantic Graph, ASG, by extending the parse tree for each compilation unit with semantic information derived from the parse trees and guided by the C++ language standard. Finally, we link the ASGs for all of the compilation units into a unified ASG for the entire application under study. © 2012 acm.

languages such as OpenCL and CUDA offer a standard interface for general-purpose programming of GPUs. However, with these languages, programmers must explicitly manage numerous low-level details involving communication and synchronization. This burden makes programming GPUs difficult and error-prone, rendering these powerful devices inaccessible to most programmers. We desire a higher-level programming model that makes GPUs more accessible while also effectively exploiting their computational power. This paper presents features of Lime, a new Java-compatible language targeting heterogeneous systems, that allow an optimizing compiler to generate high quality GPU code. The key insight is that the language type system enforces isolation and immutability invariants that allow the compiler to optimize for a GPU without heroic compiler analysis. Our compiler attains GPU speedups between 75% and 140% of the performance of native OpenCL code.

Computer experiments are part of the daily business for many researchers within the area of computational intelligence. However, there is no standard for either human or computer readable documentation of computer experiments. Such a standard could considerably improve the collaboration between experimental researchers, given it is intuitive to use. In response to this deficiency the Intelligent Param eter Utilization Tool (InPUT ) is introduced. InPUT offers a general and programming language independent format for the definition of parameters and their ranges. It provides services to simplify the implementation of algorithms and can be used as a substitute for input mechanisms of existing frameworks. InPUT reduces code-complexity and increases the reusability of algorithm designs as well as the reproducibility of experiments. InPUT is available as open-source for Java and this will soon also be extended to C++, two of the predominant languages of choice for the development of evolutionary algorithms.

Open Computing language (OpenCL) is emerging as a standard for parallel programming of heterogeneous hardware accelerators. With respect to device specific languages, OpenCL enables application portability but does not guarantee performance portability, eventually requiring additional tuning of the implementation to a specific platform or to unpredictable dynamic workloads. In this paper, we present a methodology to analyze the customization space of an OpenCL application in order to improve performance portability and to support dynamic adaptation. We formulate our case study by implementing an OpenCL image stereo-matching application (which computes the relative depth of objects from a pair of stereo images) customized to the STMicroelectronics Platform 2012 many-core computing fabric. In particular, we use design space exploration techniques to generate a set of operating points that represent specific configurations of the parameters allowing different trade-offs between performance and accuracy of the algorithm itself. These points give detailed knowledge about the interaction between the application parameters, the underlying architecture and the performance of the system;they could also be used by a run-time manager software layer to meet dynamic Quality-of-Service (QoS) constraints. To analyze the customization space, we use cycle-accurate simulations for the target architecture. Since the profiling phase of each configuration takes a long simulation time, we designed our methodology to reduce the overall number of simulations by exploiting some important features of the application parameters;our analysis also enables the identification of the parameters that could be explored on a high-level simulation model to reduce the simulation time. The resulting methodology is one order of magnitude more efficient than an exhaustive exploration and, given its randomized nature, it increases the probability to avoid sub-optimal trade-offs.

Data stream processing applications are often expressed as data flow graphs, composed of operators connected via streams. This structured representation provides a simple yet powerful paradigm for building large-scale, distributed, high-performance applications. However, there are many tasks that require sharing data across operators, and across operators and the runtime using a less structured mechanism than point-to-point data flows. Examples include updating control variables, sending notifications, collecting metrics, building collective models, etc. In this paper we describe CAPSULE, which fills this gap. CAPSULE is a code generation and runtime framework that offers an easy to use and highly flexible framework for developers to realize shared variables (CAPSULE term for shared state) by specifying a data structure (at the programming-language level), and a few associated configuration parameters that qualify the expected usage scenario. Besides the easy of use and flexibility, CAPSULE offers the following important benefits: (1) Custom Code Generation - CAPSULE makes use of user-specified configuration parameters and information from the runtime to generate shared variable servers that are tailored for the specific usage scenario, (2) Composability - CAPSULE supports deployment time composition of the shared variable servers to achieve desired levels of scalability, performance and fault-tolerance, and (3) Extensibility - CAPSULE provides simple interfaces for extending the CAPSULE framework with more protocols, transports, caching mechanisms, etc. We describe the motivation for CAPSULE and its design, report on its implementation status, and then present experimental results. There is a growing utilization gap between modern hardware and modern programming languages for data analysis. Due to power and other constraints, recent processor design has sought improved performance through increased SIMD and multi-core parallelism. At the same time, high-level, dynamically typed languages for data analysis have become popular. These languages emphasize ease of use and high productivity, but have, in general, low performance and limited support for exploiting hardware parallelism. In this paper, we describe Riposte, a new runtime for the R language, which bridges this gap. Riposte uses tracing, a technique commonly used to accelerate scalar code, to dynamically discover and extract sequences of vector operations from arbitrary R code. Once extracted, we can fuse traces to eliminate unnecessary memory traffic, compile them to use hardware SIMD units, and schedule them to run across multiple cores, allowing us to fully utilize the available parallelism on modern shared-memory machines. Our evaluation shows that Riposte can run vector R code near the speed of hand-optimized C, 5-50x faster than the open source implementation of R, and can also linearly scale to 32 cores for some tasks. Across 12 different workloads we achieve an overall average speed-up of over 150x without explicit programmer parallelization.
