SLAW is a language free programming environment based on structure chart techniques presented in the department's introductory courses [LAW83] [LAW86]. The current implementation, which was developed on the IBM-PC, allows for automatic translation of an algorithm design (structure chart) into PASCAL, FORTRAN and BASIC [DOR86a]. This translation is possible due in part to inclusion of the dictionary of variables into the design [DOR85]. The environment has been tested and used by many students at Tulane and is currently being used in a local high school's advanced computer science course [DOR86b].A structure chart is a tree representation of an algorithm. Procedures and functions are represented as separate charts, themselves forming trees, with all the trees forming a forest of trees. Within this tree representation only certain structured constructs are allowed to be used. These constructs are: sequence, selection, looping and procedure/function call. Under no conditions are unrestricted branches allowed.

Using only traditional techniques the implementation of concerns like exception handling, multi-object protocols, synchronization constraints, and security policies tends to be spread out in the code. The lack of modularity for these concerns makes them more difficult to develop and maintain. This tutorial shows how to use Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) [2, 3] to implement concerns like these in a concise modular way. We discuss the effect aspects have on software design and on code modularity. The concrete examples in the tutorial use AspectJ [1], a freely available aspect-oriented extension to the Java™ programming language.

This paper discusses several techniques used in developing a parallel, production quality data mining application in Java. We started by developing three sequential versions of a product recommendation data mining application: (i) a Fortran 90 version used as a performance reference, (ii) a plain Java implementation that only uses the primitive array structures from the language, and (iii) a baseline Java implementation that uses our Array package for Java. This Array package provides parallelism at the level of individual Array and BLAS operations. Using this Array package, we also developed two parallel Java versions of the data mining application: one that relies entirely on the implicit parallelism provided by the Array package, and another that is explicitly parallel at the application level. We discuss the design of the Array package, as well as the design of the data mining application. We compare the trade-offs between performance and the abstraction level the different Java versions present to the application programmer. Our studies show that, although a plain Java implementation performs poorly, the Java implementation with the Array package is quite competitive in performance with Fortran. We achieve a single processor performance of 109 Mflops, or 91% of Fortran performance, on a 332 MHz PowerPC 604e processor. Both the implicitly and explicitly parallel forms of our Java implementations also parallelize well. On an SMP with four of those PowerPC processors, the implicitly parallel form achieves 290 Mflops with no effort from the application programmer, while the explicitly parallel form achieves 340 Mflops.

While much recent research has focussed on extending databases beyond the traditional relational model, relatively little has been done to develop database tools for querying data organized in (multidimensional) arrays. The scientific computing community has made little use of available database technology. Instead, multidimensional scientific data is typically stored in local files conforming to various data exchange formats and queried via specialized access libraries tied in to general purpose programming *** allow such data to be queried using known database techniques, we design and implement a query language for multidimensional arrays. Our main design decision is to treat arrays as functions from index sets to values rather than as collection types. This leads to clean syntax and semantics as well as simple but powerful optimization *** present a calculus for arrays that extends standard calculi for complex objects. We derive a higher-level comprehension style query language based on this calculus and describe its implementation, including a data driver for the NetCDF data exchange format. Next, we explore some optimization rules obtained from the equational laws of our core calculus. Finally, we study the expressiveness of our calculus and prove that it essentially corresponds to adding ranking to a query language for complex objects.

This tutorial explains how to implement a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) for reliable systems using Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) technologies. The first half of the tutorial describes terms of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) including service, service registry, service provider, service consumer, Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Representational State Transfer (REST), and Web Service Description language (WSDL). Several examples of REST and SOAP web services are provided using the Ada Web Server (AWS). This tutorial also presents principles of SOA including loose coupling, encapsulation, composibility of web services, and statelessness of web services. The tutorial covers the benefits of SOA and organizations that are supporting SOA infrastructure. The second half of the tutorial covers Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) technologies including definitions, capabilities, benefits and drawbacks. The tutorial discusses the difference between SOA and an ESB, as well as some of the commercially available ESB solutions on the market. The Mule ESB is explored in more detail and several examples are given. Several examples of using an ESB in a SOA application are given using AWS as an Ada implementation. An AWS server is built in the examples and connected to the ESB providing REST and SOAP web services. AWS allows the developer to expose services in a high-integrity system using the Ada and SPARK programming languages. This tutorial is slightly different than the one given at Ada Europe 2008 in that it will focus more on the application of SOA and ESB technology to reliable, high-integrity systems. All tutorial material will be provided to attendees and the opportunity for hands-on participation in examples will be possible.

There are two trends in the software initiatives of the U. S. Department of Defense which will have direct impact on future software development and which suggest a focus for current basic research in software. These trends are 1) the move toward smart weapons, suggesting the use of Expert Systems to control these weapons, and 2) the directive that all software for embedded computer systems be written in Ada. The research focus suggested by these developments is an analysis of the Ada programming language and its associated programming support environment (APSE) to determine how to design and construct an Expert System for natural implementation in *** is well known that Ada can be used as a language for Expert Systems. There now exist several Expert System Shells written in Ada and more are being developed every day. The issue still open to research is how to do this optimally, making the best use of the expressive power of the language. An absurd example will make this clearer. It is also known that it is possible to write an Expert System in COBOL. Doing such would be a very tedious and error prone task, because the expressive power of the COBOL language is focused on commercial *** possibility for writing an Expert System in Ada would be to take an existing Expert System in LISP and translate the code, line for line into Ada. Admittedly this is a plausible task; this author has done some preliminary investigation in this area. However, it is arguable that such an approach will not result in efficient Ada code, for constructs which are natural to LISP might not translate into constructs natural to *** it is difficult to give a precise definition of an Expert System, it is easy to list characteristics which are usually associated with such a system. This paper presents the results of some preliminary research on the implementation of these features by means of some of the structures in Ada, such as Generic Program Units, Packages and Data

Satisfiability of complex word-level formulas often arises as a problem in formal verification of hardware designs described at the register transfer level (RTL). Even though most designs are described in a hardware description language (HDL), like Verilog or VHDL, usually this problem is solved in the Boolean domain, using Boolean solvers. These engines often show a poor performance for data path verification. Instead of solving the problem at the bit-level, a method is proposed to transform conjunctions of bitvector equalities and inequalities into sets of integer linear arithmetic constraints. It is shown that it is possible to correctly model the modulo semantics of HDL operators as linear constraints. Integer linear constraint solvers are used as a decision procedure for bitvector arithmetic. In the implementation we focus on verification of arithmetic properties of Verilog-HDL designs. Experimental results show considerable performance advantages over high-end Boolean SAT solver approaches. The speed-up on the benchmarks studied is several orders of magnitude.

Systematic formulation of software process models is currently a challenging problem in software engineering. We present an approach to define models covering the phases of specification, design, implementation and testing of software systems in the component programming framework, taking into account non-functional aspects of software (efficiency, etc.), automatic reusability of implementations in systems and also prototyping techniques involving both specifications and implementations. Our proposal relies on the identification of a catalogue of tasks that appear during these phases which satisfy some relationships concerning their order of execution. A software process model can be defined as the addition of more relationships over these tasks using a simple, modular process language. We have developed also a formal definition of correctness of a software development with respect to a software process model, based on the formulation of models as graphs.

CORAL is a deductive database system that supports a rich declarative language, provides a wide range of evaluation methods, and allows a combination of declarative and imperative programming. The data can be persistent on disk or can reside in main-memory. We describe the architecture and implementation of *** were two important goals in the design of the CORAL architecture: (1) to integrate the different evaluation strategies in a reasonable fashion, and (2) to allow users to influence the optimization techniques used so as to exploit the full power of the CORAL implementation. A CORAL declarative program can be organized as a collection of interacting modules and this modular structure is the key to satisfying both these goals. The high level module interface allows modules with different evaluation techniques to interact in a transparent fashion. Further, users can optionally tailor the execution of a program by selecting from among a wide range of control choices at the level of each *** also has an interface with C++, and users can program in a combination of declarative CORAL, and C++ extended with CORAL primitives. A high degree of extensibility is provided by allowing C++ programmers to use the class structure of C++ to enhance the CORAL implementation.

We present RustSim, a library for discrete-event process-oriented simulations designed and implemented in the Rust programming language. It includes a broad set of classes to allow the user to implement simulation processes and process-oriented primitives. The flexible modular design of RustSim allows users to extend its functionality. In addition, RustSim includes mechanisms to avoid inconsistencies when applying state-changing primitives that other libraries in the language's ecosystem do not provide. We take advantage of Rust generators (coroutine equivalents) to implement process-oriented simulation primitives. Finally, the library's internal process handling structure is discussed in detail, including its implementation, how simulations are executed, and a case study with a highly detailed example of its use.
