Change is inevitable for software systems to deal with the evolving environment surrounding them, and applying changes requires careful design and implementation not to break existing functionalities. Evolution in software product lines (SPLs) is more complex compared to evolution for individual products: a change applied to a single feature might affect all the products in the whole product family. In this paper we present an approach for change impact analysis in delta-oriented programming (DOP), an existing language aimed at supporting SPLs. We propose the CIAHelper tool to identify dependencies within a DOP program, by analyzing the semantics of both the code artifacts and variability models to construct a directed dependency graph. We also consider how the source code history could be used to enhance the recall of detecting the affected artifacts given a change proposal. We evaluate our approach by means of five case studies on two different DOP SPLs.

Appropriately placing freshmen students into introductory programming courses can be problematic. Performance in high school coursework, SAT scores, AP courses, and even pretesting can be poor predictors of success for individuals. Yet, putting all students through the same curricular experience is not a good solution. Contention can develop between students who quickly grasp concepts and those who take longer to learn. However, experience has shown that performance in the first college programming course can be a predictor of future success. In the 2001-2 academic year, the Information Technology Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology began teaching a three-term introductory programming sequence in studio format. One unexpected benefit of this approach was the ability to quickly and accurately assess how well students were learning programming concepts (Hill et al, 2002). In the 2002-3 academic year, this assessment was used to design flexibility into the beginning programming sequence. A new curriculum was implemented that uses performance in the first course for placement in subsequent courses. All students took the same first programming course. Based on their performance, successful students were advised into one of two "second course" options, either the standard second course or an alternatively paced two-course sequence. The new two-term sequence included a review of the more difficult material from the first course along with the material from the standard second course, but taught at a slower pace. A questionnaire was given to all students who opted into the alternate-paced sequence for their feedback. The slower presentation pace and the time for additional projects in the alternative course sequence have proven to be a benefit to students. Copyright 2003 acm.

The concepts of a methodology for designing and implementing the control and integration software of computer-integrated manufacturing systems are presented. The goal of this methodology is to build flexible and reusable software. Software flexibility is obtained by decoupling the process plan models from the factory floor model and by designing generic control algorithms. Reusability is achieved by building self-contained software/hardware components with general, possibility parametrized, interfaces. These reusable components can be used to populate manufacturing software libraries. Off-the-shelf components can then be assembled into manufacturing systems. Moreover, the interplay between simulated and actual hardware internals of software/hardware components is used as the basis of a testing strategy that performs offline simulation followed by incremental online testing. The application of the methodology to the design and implementation of the control and integration software of a prismatic machining cell is reported. A highly efficient implementation of this software has been carried out in the Ada programming language and is fully operational.

Open implementation Analysis and design (OIA/D) has been introduced as a design methodology for object-oriented software systems, and in particular for substrate software. In this paper we detail our experiences with using OIA/D to design and implement a common substrate component for parallel language runtime systems: a lightweight threads package. We show how existing thread packages employ a "black-box" design, hiding crucial design decisions that drastically reduce their ability to be re-used. We detail these design decisions (dilemmas) and show how an implementation based on OIA/D principles results in a thread package that is flexible, efficient, portable, and re-usable.

Open Computing language (OpenCL) is emerging as a standard for parallel programming of heterogeneous hardware accelerators. With respect to device specific languages, OpenCL enables application portability but does not guarantee performance portability, eventually requiring additional tuning of the implementation to a specific platform or to unpredictable dynamic workloads. In this paper, we present a methodology to analyze the customization space of an OpenCL application in order to improve performance portability and to support dynamic adaptation. We formulate our case study by implementing an OpenCL image stereo-matching application (which computes the relative depth of objects from a pair of stereo images) customized to the STMicroelectronics Platform 2012 many-core computing fabric. In particular, we use design space exploration techniques to generate a set of operating points that represent specific configurations of the parameters allowing different trade-offs between performance and accuracy of the algorithm itself. These points give detailed knowledge about the interaction between the application parameters, the underlying architecture and the performance of the system;they could also be used by a run-time manager software layer to meet dynamic Quality-of-Service (QoS) constraints. To analyze the customization space, we use cycle-accurate simulations for the target architecture. Since the profiling phase of each configuration takes a long simulation time, we designed our methodology to reduce the overall number of simulations by exploiting some important features of the application parameters;our analysis also enables the identification of the parameters that could be explored on a high-level simulation model to reduce the simulation time. The resulting methodology is one order of magnitude more efficient than an exhaustive exploration and, given its randomized nature, it increases the probability to avoid sub-optimal trade-offs.

Isolation for Nested Task Parallelism

Isolation-the property that a task can access shared data without interference from other tasks-is one of the most basic concerns in parallel programming. While there is a large body of past work on isolated task-parallelism, the integration of isolation, task-parallelism, and nesting of tasks has been a difficult and unresolved challenge. In this paper, we present a programming and execution model called Otello where isolation is extended to arbitrarily nested parallel tasks with irregular accesses to heap data. At the same time, no additional burden is imposed on the programmer, who only exposes parallelism by creating and synchronizing parallel tasks, leaving the job of ensuring isolation to the underlying compiler and runtime system. Otello extends our past work on Aida execution model and the delegated isolation mechanism [22] to the setting of nested parallelism. The basic runtime construct in Aida and Otello is an assembly: a task equipped with a region in the shared heap that it owns. When an assembly A conflicts with an assembly B, A transfers-or delegates-its code and owned region to a carefully selected assembly C in a way that will ensure isolation with B, leaving the responsibility of re-executing task A to C. The choice of C depends on the nesting relationship between A and B. We have implemented Otello on top of the Habanero Java (HJ) parallel programming language [8], and used this implementation to evaluate Otello on collections of nested task-parallel benchmarks and non-nested transactional benchmarks from past work. On the nested task-parallel bench-marks, Otello achieves scalability comparable to HJ programs without built-in isolation, and the relative overhead of Otello is lower than that of many published data-race detection algorithms that detect the isolation violations (but do not enforce isolation). For the transactional benchmarks, Otello incurs lower overhead than a state-of-the-art software transactional memory system (Deuce STM).

The description of product data has been standardized by ISO 10303 (also known as STEP) in form of exchangeable files, application programming interfaces and database implementation. This leads to the possibility of using standard data throughout the entire product process chain in the manufacturing environment. The impediments to realizing this principle are however believed to be the data format used at the machine level. Most computer numerical control (CNC) machines are programmed using the ISO 6983 "G-code" language, which was designed to sequentially document and pass instructions to the controls of single machine tools with little, if any, intelligence. ISO 14649 is a new standard for data transferring between CAD/CAM systems and CNC machines. It remedies the shortcomings of ISO 6983 by specifying the machining processes rather than machine tool motion by means of "Workingstep", as the basic entity. A major benefit of using ISO 14649 is its total conformity to ISO 10303. In fact, the standard that ISO 14649 defines is called STEP-NC, namely STEP extended to NC. Challenges and opportunities co-exist in this revolutionised change. The effect of this change is far-reaching as well as imminent.

Many of today's software applications require a high-level of security, defined by a detailed policy and attained via mechanisms such as role-based access control (RBAC), mandatory access control, digital signatures, etc. The integration of the design/implementation processes of access-control policies with runtime enforcement mechanisms is crucial to achieve an acceptable level of security for a software application. Our prior research focused on formalizing the concept of a role slice, which is a unified modeling language (UML) artifact that captures RBAC security requirements by defining permissions in the form of allowable or prohibited methods, and by specifying roles as specialized class diagrams that contain those methods. This paper augments this effort by introducing a formal framework for the security of software applications that supports the automatic translation of a role-slice access-control policy (RBAC requirements) into aspect-oriented programming (AOP) enforcement code that is seamlessly integrated with the application. The formal framework provides the necessary underpinnings to automate the integration of security policies into software. A prototyping effort based on Borland's UML tool Together Control Center for defining role-slice diagrams and the associated AOP code generator is under development.
