Developing a general component system for a statically typed, object-oriented language is a challenging design problem for two reasons. First, mutually recursive references across components are common in object-oriented programs - an issue that has proven troublesome in the context of component systems for functional and procedural languages. Second, inheritance across component boundaries can cause accidental method overrides. Our recent research shows that a component framework can be constructed for a nominally typed object-oriented language supporting first-class(1) generic types simply by adding appropriate annotations, syntactic sugar, and component-level type-checking. The fundamental semantic building blocks for constructing, type-checking and manipulating components are provided by the underlying first-class generic type system. To demonstrate the simplicity and utility of this approach we have designed and implemented an extension of Java called Component NEXTGEN (CGEN). CGEN, which is based on the Sun Java 5.0 javac compiler, is backwards compatible with existing Java binary code and runs on current Java Virtual Machines. The primary contribution of this paper is a technical analysis of the subtle design issues involved in building a component framework for a nominally typed object-oriented language supporting first-class generics. In contrast to component systems for structurally typed languages, mutual recursion among components is accommodated in the type system and semantics without incorporating any special machinery. Our analysis includes a presentation of Core CGEN (CCG), a small, core language modeling the CGEN framework. It is based on Featherweight GJ and incorporates some ideas from MIXGEN. CCG adds the essential features to support components, but nothing more. Our discussion includes the type rules and semantics for CCG, as well as a proof of type safety.

ML modules and Haskell type classes have proven to be highly effective tools for program structuring. Modules emphasize explicit configuration of program components and the use of data abstraction. Type classes emphasize implicit program construction and ad hoc polymorphism. In this paper, we show how the implicitly-typed style of type class programming may be supported within the framework of an explicitly-typed module language by viewing type classes as a particular mode of use of modules. This view offers a harmonious integration of modules and type classes, where type class features, such as class hierarchies and associated types, arise naturally as uses of existing module-language constructs, such as module hierarchies and type components. In addition, programmers have explicit control over which type class instances are available for use by type inference in a given scope. We formalize our approach as a Harper-Stone-style elaboration relation, and provide a sound type inference algorithm as a guide to implementation.

The JastAdd Extensible Java Compiler is a high quality Java that is easy to extend in order to build static analysis for Java, and to extend Java with new language constructs. built modularly, with a Java 1.4 compiler that is to a Java 5 compiler. Example applications that are as extensions include an alternative backend that generates, an extension of Java with AspectJ constructs, the implementation of a pluggable type system for nonnull and inference. system is implemented using JastAdd, a declarative like language. We describe the compiler architecture, major design ideas for building and extending the compiler, particular, for dealing with complex extensions that name and type analysis. Our extensible compiler compares favorably concerning quality, speed and size with extensible Java compiler frameworks. It also compares in quality and size compared with traditional nonextensible compilers, and it runs within a factor of three compared to javac. © 2007 acm.

In this paper, we present a new approach to the integration of object-oriented programming languages, database programming languages and query languages. While object-oriented programming languages and languages that are supported by object database systems appear to be closely related, there are a number of significant differences that affect language design and implementation. Such issues include the degree of encapsulation, persistence, the incooperation types and classes, inheritance, concurrency, NULL values, garbage collection etc. In this paper, we outline the respective challenges that affect language design and provide a brief overview of the integrated object-oriented database programming and querying language DBPQL.

Existing languages provide good support for typeful programming of stand-alone programs. In a distributed system, however, there may be interaction between multiple instances of many distinct programs, sharing some (but not necessarily all) of their module structure, and with some instances rebuilt with new versions of certain modules as time goes on. In this paper, we discuss programming-language support for such systems, focussing on their typing and naming issues. We describe an experimental language, Acute, which extends an ML core to support distributed development, deployment, and execution, allowing type-safe interaction between separately built programs. The main features are (1) type-safe marshalling of arbitrary values;(2) type names that are generated (freshly and by hashing) to ensure that type equality tests suffice to protect the invariants of abstract types, across the entire distributed system;(3) expression-level names generated to ensure that name equality tests suffice for type safety of associated values, for example, values carried on named channels;(4) controlled dynamic rebinding of marshalled values to local resources;and (5) thunkification of threads and mutexes to support computation mobility. These features are a large part of what is needed for typeful distributed programming. They are a relatively lightweight extension of ML, should be efficiently implementable, and are expressive enough to enable a wide variety of distributed infrastructure layers to be written as simple library code above the byte-string network and persistent store APIs. This disentangles the language run-time from communication intricacies. This paper highlights the main design choices in Acute. It is supported by a full language definition (of typing, compilation, and operational semantics), by a prototype implementation, and by example distribution libraries.

Programmers resort to design patterns, microarchitectures, and other idioms when their design ideas can't be expressed directly in the programming language. The crosscutting code that appears as a result makes it harder to ensure a correct implementation of the idiom, and complicates software evolution when the idiom's implementation cannot be modularly substituted or extended like a method or class. We propose Concepts, an IDE-based mechanism for declaring, checking, and evolving crosscutting design idioms. Programmers code their design idioms as before, but also declare their fundamental properties in supplemental files. A concept's behavior and implementation are described separately. This separation permits describing a new implementation for a concept and then having the concept tool mechanically transform the concept's current implementation into the new one. As a result we aim to get many of the same benefits for concepts that we get for classes: checking of key behaviors and substitutability.

Handling distributed authorization with delegation through answer set programming

Distributed authorization is an essential issue in computer security. Recent research shows that trust management is a promising approach for the authorization in distributed environments. There are two key issues for a trust management system: how to design an expressive high-level policy language and how to solve the compliance-checking problem (Blaze et al. in proceedings of the Symposium on Security and Privacy, pp. 164-173, 1996;proceedings of 2nd International conference on Financial Cryptography (FC'98). LNCS, vol.1465,pp.254-274, 1998), where ordinary logic programming has been used to formalize various distributed authorization policies (Li et al. in proceedings of the 2002 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, pp. 114-130, 2002;acm Trans. Inf. Syst. Secur. (TISSEC) 6(1): 128-171, 2003). In this paper, we employ Answer Set programming to deal with many complex issues associated with the distributed authorization along the trust management approach. In particular, we propose a formal authorization language AL providing its semantics through Answer Set programming. Using language AL, we cannot only express nonmonotonic delegation policies which have not been considered in previous approaches, but also represent the delegation with depth, separation of duty, and positive and negative authorizations. We also investigate basic computational properties related to our approach. Through two case studies. we further illustrate the application of our approach in distributed environments.

Sensor networks are notoriously difficult to program, given that they encompass the complexities of both distributed and embedded systems. To address this problem, we present the design and implementation of a declarative sensor network platform, DSN: a declarative language, compiler and runtime suitable for programming a broad range of sensornet applications. We demonstrate that our approach is a natural fit for sensor networks by specifying several very different classes of traditional sensor network protocols. services and applications entirely declaratively - these include tree and geographic routing, link estimation, data collection, event tracking, version coherency, and localization. To our knowledge, this is the first time these disparate sensornet tasks have been addressed by a single high-level programming environment. Moreover, the declarative approach accommodates the desire for architectural flexibility and simple management of limited resources. Our results suggest that the declarative approach is well-suited to sensor networks, and that it can produce concise and flexible code by focusing on what the code is doing, and not on how it is doing it.

Multiple dispatch - the selection of a function to be invoked based on the dynamic type of two or more arguments - is a solution to several classical problems in object-oriented programming. Open multi-methods generalize multiple dispatch towards open-class extensions, which improve separation of concerns and provisions for retroactive design. We present the rationale, design, implementation, and performance of a language feature, called open multi-methods, for C++. Our open multi-methods support both repeated and virtual inheritance. Our call resolution rules generalize both virtual function dispatch and overload resolution semantics. After using all information from argument types, these rules can resolve further ambiguities by using covariant return types. Great care was taken to integrate open multi-methods with existing C++ language features and rules. We describe a model implementation and compare its performance and space requirements to existing open multi-method extensions and workaround techniques for C++. Compared to these techniques, our approach is simpler to use, catches more user mistakes, and resolves more ambiguities through link-time analysis, runs significantly faster, and requires less memory. In particular, the runtime cost of calling an open multi method is constant and less than the cost of a double dispatch (two virtual function calls). Finally, we provide a sketch of a design for open multi-methods in the presence of dynamic loading and linking of libraries. Copyright © 2007 acm.
