Robust and powerful software instrumentation tools are essential for program analysis tasks such as profiling, performance evaluation, and bug detection. To meet this need, we have developed a new instrumentation system called Pin. Our goals are to provide easy-to-use, portable, transparent, and efficient instrumentation. Instrumentation tools (called Pintools) are written in C/C++ using Pin's rich API. Pin follows the model of ATOM, allowing the tool writer to analyze an application at the instruction level with-out the need for detailed knowledge of the underlying instruction set. The API is designed to be architecture independent whenever possible, making Pintools source compatible across different architectures. However, a Pintool can access architecture-specific details when necessary. Instrumentation with Pin is mostly transparent as the application and Pintool observe the application's original, uninstrumented behavior. Pin uses dynamic compilation to instrument executables while they are running. For efficiency, Pin uses several techniques, including inlining, register re-allocation, liveness analysis, and instruction scheduling to optimize instrumentation. This fully automated approach delivers significantly better instrumentation performance than similar tools. For example, Pin is 3.3x faster than Valgrind and 2x faster than DynamoRIO for basic-block counting. To illustrate Pin's versatility, we describe two Pintools in daily use to analyze production software. Pin is publicly available for Linux platforms on four architectures: IA32 (32-bit x86), EM64T (64-bit x86), Itanium®, and ARM. In the ten months since Pin 2 was released in July 2004, there have been over 3000 downloads from its website. Copyright 2005 acm.

An aspect observes the execution of a base program;when certain actions occur, the aspect runs some extra code of its own. In the AspectJ language, the observations that an aspect can make are confined to the current action: it is not possible to directly observe the history of a computation. Recently, there have been several interesting proposals for new history-based language features, most notably by Douence et al. and by Walker and Viggers. In this paper, we present a new history-based language feature called tracematches that enables the programmer to trigger the execution of extra code by specifying a regular pattern of events in a computation trace, We have fully designed and implemented tracematches as a seamless extension of AspectJ. A key innovation in our tracematch approach is the introduction of free variables in the matching patterns. This enhancement enables a whole new class of applications in which events can be matched not only by the event kind, but also by the values associated with the free variables, We provide several examples of applications enabled by this feature. After introducing and motivating the idea of tracematches via examples, we present a detailed semantics of our language design, and we derive an implementation from that semantics. The implementation has been realised as an extension of the abc compiler for AspectJ. Copyright 2005 acm.

The combination of Unified Modeling language (UML) and SystemC has led to an object-oriented high-level design automation methodology. In this paper, a novel bi-direcdonal UML-SystemC translation tool UMLSC is proposed. Specifically, a set of principles for modeling SystemC design in UML and an algorithm for UML-SystemC bi-directional translation are addressed. The principles and the algorithm are integrated into UMLSC, which provides a smooth link between visual specification, implementation and verification. An implementation example is given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed principles and the algorithm.

A number of effective error detection tools have been built in recent years to check if a program conforms to certain design rules, An important class of design rules deals with sequences of events associated with a set of related objects. This paper presents a language called PQL (Program Query language) that allows programmers to express such questions easily in an application-specific context. A query looks like a code excerpt corresponding to the shortest amount of code that would violate a design rule. Details of the target application's precise implementation are abstracted away. The programmer may also specify actions to perform when a match is found, such as recording relevant information or even correcting an erroneous execution on the fly. We have developed both static and dynamic techniques to find solutions to PQL queries, Our static analyzer finds all potential matches conservatively using a context-sensitive, flow-insensitive, inclusion-based pointer alias analysis, Static results are also useful in reducing the number of instrumentation points for dynamic analysis. Our dynamic analyzer instruments the source program to catch all violations precisely as the program runs and to optionally perform user-specified actions. We have implemented the techniques described in this paper and found 206 errors in 6 large real-world open-source Java applications containing a total of nearly 60,000 classes. These errors are important security flaws, resource leaks, and violations of consistency invariants. The combination of static and dynamic analysis proves effective at addressing a wide range of debugging and program comprehension queries. We have found that dynamic analysis is especially suitable for preventing errors such as security vulnerabilities at runtime. Copyright 2005 acm.

The contribution of this work is the design, implementation, and early evaluation of a programming language that unifies classes and aspects. We call our new module construct the classpect. We make three basic claims. First, we can realize a unified design without significantly compromising the expressiveness of current aspect languages. Second, such a design improves the conceptual integrity of the programming model. Third, it significantly improves the compositionality of aspect modules, expanding the program design space from the two-layered model of AspectJ-like languages to include hierarchical structures. To support these claims, we present the design and implementation of Eos-U, an AspectJ-like language based on C# that supports classpects as the basic unit of modularity. We show that Eos-U supports layered designs in which classpects separate integration concerns flexibly at multiple levels of composition. The underpinnings of our design include support for aspect instantiation under program control, instance-level advising, advising as a general alternative to object-oriented method invocation and overriding, and the provision of a separate join-point-method binding construct. Research in the design of aspect-oriented programming languages requires a workbench that facilitates easy experimentation with new language features and implementation techniques. In particular, new features for AspectJ have been proposed that require extensions in many dimensions: syntax, type checking and code generation, as well as data flow and control flow analyses. The AspectBench Compiler (abc) is an implementation of such a workbench. The base version of abc implements the full AspectJ language. Its frontend is built, using the Polyglot framework, as a modular extension of the Java language. The use of Polyglot gives flexibility of syntax and type checking. The backend is built using the Soot framework, to give modular code generation and analyses. In this paper, we outline the design of abc, focusing mostly on how the design supports extensibility. We then provide a general overview of how to use abc to implement an extension. Finally, we illustrate the extension mechanisms of abc through a number of small, but non-trivial, examples, abc is freely available under the GNU LGPL. Copyright 2005 acm.

We describe race-free properties of a hardware description language called GEZEL. The language describes networks of cycle-true finite-state-machines with datapaths (FSMDs). We derive a set of four rules under which a network of such FSMDs satisfies the Kahn principle. When applying those rules, GEZEL programs will be determinate and a designer will thus obtain race-free hardware. We define extended FSMD networks as FSMD networks for which some components are user-defined and not specified as FSMDs. An important result is that the determinate properties of the FSMD network are also valid for the extended FSMD network provided that the user-defined components are determinate. Most hardware description languages do not have this determinacy. Their simulation semantics are dependent on simulator implementation, and on a run-time race resolution mechanism. We therefore position GEZEL as a model of computation that RTL designers should have in mind while creating RTL models. In fact, we can generate SystemC and other HDL code from GEZEL models, thereby guaranteeing the determinacy in the generated HDL code. © 2005 IEEE.

Based on our experiences and those of our peers, we hypothesized that in Java code, the majority of declarations that are of reference types are meant to be non-null. Unfortunately, the Java Modeling language (JML), like most interface specification and object-oriented programming languages, assumes that such declarations are possibly-null by default. As a consequence, developers need to write specifications that are more verbose than necessary in order to accurately document their module interfaces. In practice, this results in module interfaces being left incompletely and inaccurately specified. In this paper we present the results of a study that confirms our hypothesis. Hence, we propose an adaptation to JML that preserves its language design goals and that allows developers to specify that declarations of reference types are to be interpreted as non-null by default. We explain how this default is safer and results in less writing on the part of specifiers than null-by-default. The paper also reports on an implementation of the proposal in some of the JML tools. © 2005 acm.

Modeling Turnpike frontend system: A model-driven development framework leveraging UML metamodeling and attribute-oriented programming 05

This paper describes and empirically evaluates a new model-driven development framework, called Modeling Turnpike (or mTurnpike). It allows developers to model and program domain-specific concepts (ideas and mechanisms specific to a particular business or technology domain) and to transform them to the final (compilable) source code. By leveraging UML metamodeling and attribute-oriented programming, mTurnpike provides an abstraction to represent domain-specific concepts at the modeling and programming layers simultaneously. The mTurnpike frontend system transforms domain-specific concepts from the modeling layer to programming layer, and vise versa, in a seamless manner. Its backend system combines domain-specific models and programs, and transforms them to the final (compilable) source code. This paper focuses on the frontend system of mTurnpike, and describes its design, implementation and performance implications. In order to demonstrate how to exploit mTurnpike in application development, this paper also shows a development process using an example DSL (domain specific language) to specify service-oriented distributed systems.
