This paper describes the features that a programming environment should have in order to help learning the object-oriented programming (OOP) paradigm and let students get the skills needed to build software using objects very quickly. This proposal is centered on providing graphical tools to help understand the concepts of the paradigm and let students create objects before they are presented the class concept [14]. The object, message and reference concepts are considered of primary importance during the teaching process, allowing quick acquisition of both theory and practice of concepts such as delegation, polymorphism and composition [7]. Additionally, a current implementation of the proposed software and the experience gained so far using it for teaching at universities and work trainings. Finally, we describe possible extensions to the proposed software that are currently under study. Copyright © 2011 acm.

The construction of large scale parallel and concurrent applications is one of the greatest challenges faced by software engineers nowadays. Modern programming models for concurrency including libraries implementing high level abstractions such as JCSP lead to tangled and scattered concurrency code. As such, this paper outlines our initial effort on the separate of concurrent (JCSP code) concern from the sequential Java processes. We explore metadata annotations to implement this separation of concerns. A compiler generates AspectJ code used to instrument the JCSP features under the hood. We also present a case study that assesses the benefits of the proposed approach through a metrics suite. Copyright 2011 acm.

We designed an introductory parallel programming course at the bachelor level. The class differs from other courses in its structure: The course is organized along the tiers of parallelism [25]. The tiers categorize abstractions and concepts that a software developer can choose when crafting a parallel program. The tiers are from higher to lower abstraction levels: (1) automatic/implicit parallelism, e.g., parallel libraries;(2) deterministic parallelism, e.g., at the level of independent loops;(3) explicitly synchronized, e.g., shared memory with locks;(4) low-level concurrent programming with data races, e.g., lock-free data structures. The goal of the class is to introduce fundamental principles of parallel systems and to expose students to all tiers in the architecture of a parallel system. The course serves as a platform for further exploration in specialized classes. The course has a significant share of lab sessions and programming projects. We chose the programming language X10 as the core technology and found that it facilitates the learning and rapid application of concepts at different abstraction layers and programming models. The language permits to specify common forms of parallelism, data sharing, distribution, and synchronization with succinct syntax and support for an eclipse-based IDE. We report on our first experience in teaching this course, which resulted in very positive student feedback. © 2011 acm.

Network-based provisioning of custom-made and adaptive services offers unlimited opportunities for service development. Examples include ICT-based information, assistance, coordination, and remote monitoring services for senior citizens. Addressing diversity and unpredictable changeability requirements of such service platforms entails novel design solutions. I present Web Pontoon, a method tailored specifically for handling these requirements by a combination of web content management, client-side end-user programming, closed-loop management of object lifecycles, and domain-driven design. Reuse in object-oriented languages typically focuses on inheritance. Numerous techniques have been developed to provide finer-grained reuse of methods, such as flavors, mixins and traits. These techniques, however, only deal with reuse at the level of classes. Class-based reuse is inherently static. Increasing use of reflection and meta-programming techniques in real world applications underline the need for more dynamic approaches. New approaches have shifted to object-specific reuse. However, these techniques fail to provide a complete solution to the composition issues arising during reuse. We propose a new approach that deals with reuse at the object level and that supports behavioral composition. We introduce a new abstraction called a talent which models features that are shared between objects of different class hierarchies. Talents provide a composition mechanism that is as flexible as that of traits but which is dynamic. Copyright © 2011 acm.

Indexes are ubiquitous. Examples include associative arrays, dictionaries, maps and hashes used in applications such as databases, file systems and dynamic languages. Abstractly, a sequential index can be viewed as a partial function from keys to values. Values can be queried by their keys, and the index can be mutated by adding or removing mappings. Whilst appealingly simple, this abstract specification is insufficient for reasoning about indexes accessed concurrently. We present an abstract specification for concurrent indexes. We verify several representative concurrent client applications using our specification, demonstrating that clients can reason abstractly without having to consider specific underlying implementations. Our specification would, however, mean nothing if it were not satisfied by standard implementations of concurrent indexes. We verify that our specification is satisfied by algorithms based on linked lists, hash tables and BLink trees. The complexity of these algorithms, in particular the BLink tree algorithm, can be completabely hidden from the client's view by our abstract specification. Isolation-the property that a task can access shared data without interference from other tasks-is one of the most basic concerns in parallel programming. In this paper, we present Aida, a new model of isolated execution for parallel programs that perform frequent, irregular accesses to pointer-based shared data structures. The three primary benefits of Aida are dynamism, safety and liveness guarantees, and programmability. First, Aida allows tasks to dynamically select and modify, in an isolated manner, arbitrary fine-grained regions in shared data structures, all the while maintaining a high level of concurrency. Consequently, the model can achieve scalable parallelization of regular as well as irregular shared-memory applications. Second, the model offers freedom from data races, deadlocks, and livelocks. Third, no extra burden is imposed on programmers, who access the model via a simple, declarative isolation construct that is similar to that for transactional memory. The key new insight in Aida is a notion of delegation among concurrent isolated tasks (known in Aida as assemblies). Each assembly A is equipped with a region in the shared heap that it owns-the only objects accessed by A are those it owns, guaranteeing race-freedom. The region owned by A can grow or shrink flexibly-however, when A needs to own a datum owned by B, A delegates itself, as well as its owned region, to B. From now on, B has the responsibility of re-executing the task A set out to complete. Delegation as above is the only inter-assembly communication primitive in Aida. In addition to reducing contention in a local, data-driven manner, it guarantees freedom from deadlocks and livelocks. We offer an implementation of Aida on top of the Habanero Java parallel programming language. The implementation employs several novel ideas, including the use of a union-find data structure to represent tasks and the regions that they own. Traits have been proposed as a more flexible mechanism for code structuring in object-oriented programming than class inheritance, for achieving fine-grained code reuse. A trait originally developed for one purpose can be modified and reused in a completely different context. Formalizations of traits have been extensively studied, and implementations of traits have started to appear in programming languages. However, work on formally establishing properties of trait-based programs has so far mostly concentrated on type systems. This paper proposes the first deductive proof system for a trait-based object-oriented language. If a specification for a trait can be given a priori, covering all actual usage of that trait, our proof system is modular as each trait is analyzed only once. In order to reflect the flexible reuse potential of traits, our proof system additionally allows new specifications to be added to a trait in an incremental way which does not violate established proofs.
