Reactive programming and event-based programming are two closely related programming styles that are becoming ever more important with the advent of advanced HCI technology and the ever increasing requirement for applications to run on the web or on collaborating mobile devices. A number of publications about middleware and language design - so-called reactive and event-based languages and systems - have already seen the light, but the field still raises several questions. For example, the interaction with mainstream language concepts is poorly understood, implementation technology is in its infancy and modularity mechanisms are almost totally lacking. Moreover, large applications are still to be developed and patterns and tools for developing reactive applications is an area that is vastly unexplored. This workshop gathers researchers in reactive and event-based languages and systems. The goal of the workshop is to exchange new technical research results and to define better the field by coming up with taxonomies and overviews of the existing work.

Development environments which aim to provide short feedback loops to developers must strike a balance between immediacy and the ability to abstract and reuse behavioral modules. The Lively Kernel, a self-supporting, browser-based environment for explorative development supports standard object-oriented programming with classes or prototypes, but also a more immediate, object-centric approach for modifying and programming visible objects directly. This allows users to quickly create graphical prototypes with concrete objects. However, when developing with the object-centric approach, sharing behavior between similar objects becomes cumbersome. Developers must choose to either abstract behavior into classes, scatter code across collaborating objects, or to manually copy code between multiple objects. That is, they must choose between less concrete development, reduced maintainability, or code duplication. In this paper, we propose Lively Groups, an extension to the object-centric development tools of Lively to work on multiple concrete objects. With Lively Groups, developers may dynamically organize live objects that share behavior using tags. They can then modify and program such groups as if they were single objects. Our approach scales the Lively Kernel's explorative development approach from one to many objects, while preserving the maintainability of abstractions and the immediacy of concrete objects.

Specifying the functional behaviour of a concurrent program can often be quite troublesome: it is hard to provide a stable method contract that can not be invalidated by other threads. In this paper we propose a novel modular technique for specifying and verifying behavioural properties in concurrent programs. Our approach uses history-based specifications. A history is a process algebra term built of actions, where each action represents an update over a heap location. Instead of describing the object's precise state, a method contract may describe the method's behaviour in terms of actions recorded in the history. The client class can later use the history to reason about the concrete state of the object. Our approach allows providing simple and intuitive specifications, while the logic is a simple extension of permission-based separation logic. © 2014 acm.

Java reflection enables us to write reusable programs that are independent of certain classes. However, when runtime performance is a big concern, we propose to use compile-time reflection for writing metaprograms that generate non-reflective class/type specific code, which has lower runtime cost. We proposed both compile-time reflection and metaprogramming for Java, and extended our previous work on pattern-based traits. Pattern-based traits integrate pattern-based reflection with flexible composition of traits. They are capable of pattern-matching over class members and generating expressive code. We add and formalize pattern-based reflection at the statement-level, which enables a meta program to generate statements. We add reified generics for pattern-based traits, which enables a pattern to iterate over any class when traits are instantiated. We implemented an ORM tool (called PtjORM) using pattern-based traits. PtjORM uses compile-time reflection and our benchmark tests show that it has competitive runtime performance compared to the mainstream Java ORM tools.

Erlang implements a message-passing execution model in which concurrent processes send each other messages asynchronously. This model is inherently non-deterministic: a process can receive messages sent by any process which knows its process identifier, leading to an exponential number of possible executions based on the number messages received. concurrent programs in non-deterministic languages are notoriously hard to prove correct and have led to well-known disasters. Furthermore, Erlang natively provides distribution and process clustering. This enables processes to asynchronously communicate between different virtual machines across the network, which increases the potential non-determinism. We propose a new execution model for Erlang, "Deterministic Dataflow programming", based on a highly available, scalable single-assignment data store implemented on top of the riak-core distributed systems framework. This execution model provides concurrent communication between Erlang processes, yet has no observable non-determinism. Given the same input values, a deterministic dataflow program will always return the same output values, or never return;liveness under failures is sacrificed to ensure safety. Our proposal provides a distributed deterministic dataflow solution that operates transparently over distributed Erlang, providing the ability to have highly-available, fault-tolerant, deterministic computations. © 2014 acm.

Modern computers improve their predecessors with additional parallelism but require concurrent software to exploit it. object-orientation is instrumental in simplifying sequential programming, however, in a concurrent setting, programmers adding new methods in a subclass typically have to modify the code of the superclass, which inhibits reuse, a problem known as inheritance anomaly. There have been much efforts by researchers in the last two decades to solve the problem by deriving anomaly-free languages. Yet, these proposals have not ended up as practical solutions, thus one may ask why. In this article, we investigate from a theoretical perspective if a solution of the problem would introduce extra code *** model object behavior as a regular language, and show that freedom from inheritance anomaly necessitates a language where ensuring Liskov-Wing substitutability becomes a language containment problem, which in our modeling is PSPACE hard. This indicates that we cannot expect programmers to manually ensure that subtyping holds in an anomaly-free language. Anomaly freedom thus predictably leads to software bugs and we doubt the value of providing it. From the practical perspective, the problem is already solved. Inheritance anomaly is part of the general fragile base class problem of object-oriented programming, that arises due to code coupling in implementation inheritance. In modern software practice, the fragile base class problem is circumvented by interface abstraction to avoid implementation inheritance, and opting for composition as means for *** discuss concurrent programming issues with composition for reuse. To realize context-orientation in concurrent systems, espe- cially in systems based on asynchronous communication, we must take special care to control synchronizations among context changes and other computations. In this paper, we present a method to construct a reective architecture for a group of actors and describe the method to implement con- current context-oriented systems. The key idea is to apply parallel composition to actors that constitute the meta-level of the group. This results in a uniform construction method for various types of meta-level actors. Using the method, we give a solution to a synchronization problem regarding cross-context messages.
