The past decade of experience has demonstrated that the generic programming methodology is highly effective for the design, implementation, and use of large-scale software libraries. The fundamental principle of generic programming is the realization of interfaces for entire sets of components, based on their essential syntactic and semantic requirements, rather than for any particular components. Many programming languages have features for describing interfaces between software components, but none completely support the approach used in generic programming. We have recently developed G, a language designed to provide first-class language support for generic programming and large-scale libraries. In this paper, we present an overview of g and analyze the interdependence between language features and library design in light of a complete implementation of the Standard Template Library using G. In addition, we discuss important issues related to modularity and encapsulation in large-scale libraries and how language support for validation of components in isolation can prevent many common problems in component integration.

While data visualization plays a crucial role in gaining insights from data, generating answers over complex visualizations from natural language questions is far from an easy task. Mainstream approaches reduce data visualization queries to a semantic parsing problem, which either relies on expensive-to-annotate supervised training data that pairs natural language questions with logical forms, or weakly supervised models that incorporate a larger corpus but fail on long-tailed queries without explanations. This paper aims to answer data visualization queries by automatically synthesizing the corresponding program from natural language. At the core of our technique is an abstract synthesis engine that is bootstrapped by an off-the-shelf weakly supervised model and an optimal synthesis algorithm guided by triangle alignment constraints, which represent consistency among natural language, visualization, and the synthesized program. Starting with a few tentative answers obtained from an off-the-shelf statistical model, our approach first involves an abstract synthesizer that generates a set of sketches that are consistent with the answers. Then we design an instance of optimal synthesis to complete one of the candidate sketches by satisfying common type constraints and maximizing the consistency among three parties, i.e., natural language, the visualization, and the candidate program. We implement the proposed idea in a system called POE that can answer visualization queries from natural language. Our method is fully automated and does not require users to know the underlying schema of the visualizations. We evaluate POE on 629 visualization queries and our experiment shows that Poe outperforms state-of-the-arts by improving the accuracy from 44% to 59%.

High-performance kernel libraries are critical to exploiting accelerators and specialized instructions in many applications. Because compilers are difficult to extend to support diverse and rapidly-evolving hardware targets, and automatic optimization is often insufficient to guarantee state-of-the-art performance, these libraries are commonly still coded and optimized by hand, at great expense, in low-level C and assembly. To better support development of high-performance libraries for specialized hardware, we propose a new programming language, Exo, based on the principle of exocompilation: externalizing target-specific code generation support and optimization policies to user-level code. Exo allows custom hardware instructions, specialized memories, and accelerator configuration state to be defined in user libraries. It builds on the idea of user scheduling to externalize hardware mapping and optimization decisions. Schedules are defined as composable rewrites within the language, and we develop a set of effect analyses which guarantee program equivalence and memory safety through these transformations. We show that Exo enables rapid development of state-of-the-art matrix-matrix multiply and convolutional neural network kernels, for both an embedded neural accelerator and x86 with AVX-512 extensions, in a few dozen lines of code each.

We present CLAP, a new technique to reproduce concurrency bugs. CLAP has two key steps. First, it logs thread local execution paths at runtime. Second, offline, it computes memory dependencies that accord with the logged execution and are able to reproduce the observed bug. The second step works by combining constraints from the thread paths and constraints based on a memory model, and computing an execution with a constraint solver. CLAP has four major advantages. First, logging purely local execution of each thread is substantially cheaper than logging memory interactions, which enables CLAP to be efficient compared to previous approaches. Second, our logging does not require any synchronization and hence with no added memory barriers or fences;this minimizes perturbation and missed bugs due to extra synchronizations foreclosing certain racy behaviors. Third, since it uses no synchronization, we extend CLAP to work on a range of relaxed memory models, such as TSO and PSO, in addition to sequential consistency. Fourth, CLAP can compute a much simpler execution than the original one, that reveals the bug with minimal thread context switches. To mitigate the scalability issues, we also present an approach to parallelize constraint solving, which theoretically scales our technique to programs with arbitrary execution length. Experimental results on a variety of multithreaded benchmarks and real world concurrent applications validate these advantages by showing that our technique is effective in reproducing concurrency bugs even under relaxed memory models;furthermore, it is significantly more efficient than a state-of-the-art technique that records shared memory dependencies, reducing execution time overhead by 45% and log size by 88% on average.

Given the central role that C continues to play in systems software, and the difficulty of writing safe and correct C code, it remains a grand challenge to develop effective formal methods for verifying C programs. In this paper, we propose a new approach to this problem: a type system we call RefinedC, which combines ownership types (for modular reasoning about shared state and concurrency) with refinement types (for encoding precise invariants on C data types and Hoare-style specifications for C functions). RefinedC is both automated (requiring minimal user intervention) and foundational (producing a proof of program correctness in Coq), while at the same time handling a range of low-level programming idioms such as pointer arithmetic. In particular, following the approach of RustBelt, the soundness of the RefinedC type system is justified semantically by interpretation into the Coq-based Iris framework for higherorder concurrent separation logic. However, the typing rules of RefinedC are also designed to be encodable in a new "separation logic programmingz language we call Lithium. By restricting to a carefully chosen (yet expressive) fragment of separation logic, Lithium supports predictable, automatic, goal-directed proof search without backtracking. We demonstrate the effectiveness of RefinedC on a range of representative examples of C code.

A software product line (SPL) encodes a potentially large variety of software products as variants of some common code base. Up until now, re-using traditional static analyses for SPLs was virtually intractable, as it required programmers to generate and analyze all products individually. In this work, however, we show how an important class of existing inter-procedural static analyses can be transparently lifted to SPLs. Without requiring programmers to change a single line of code, our approach SPLLIFT automatically converts any analysis formulated for traditional programs within the popular IFDS framework for inter-procedural, finite, distributive, subset problems to an SPL-aware analysis formulated in the IDE framework, a well-known extension to IFDS. Using a full implementation based on Heros, Soot, CIDE and JavaBDD, we show that with SPLLIFT one can reuse IFDS-based analyses without changing a single line of code. Through experiments using three static analyses applied to four Java-based product lines, we were able to show that our approach produces correct results and outperforms the traditional approach by several orders of magnitude.

Complete run-time checking of programs is an essential tool for the development of reliable software. A number of features of the programming language PASCAL (arrays, subranges, pointers, record variants (discriminated type unions), formal procedures, etc.) can require some checking at run-time as well as during compilation. The problem of efficiently implementing such checking is considered. language modifications to simplify such checking are suggested. Syntax definitions are pervasive in modern software systems, and serve as the basis for language processing tools like parsers and compilers. Mainstream parser generators pose restrictions on syntax definitions that follow from their implementation algorithm. They hamper evolution, maintainability, and compositionality of syntax definitions. The pureness and declarativity of syntax definitions is lost. We analyze how these problems arise for different aspects of syntax definitions, discuss their consequences for language engineers, and show how the pure and declarative nature of syntax definitions can be regained.

In this paper, we describe our experience with using an abstract integer-set framework to develop the Rice dHPF compiler, a compiler for High Performance Fortran. We present simple, yet general formulations of the major computation partitioning and communication analysis tasks as well as a number of important optimizations in terms of abstract operations on sets of integer tuples. This approach has made it possible to implement a comprehensive collection of advanced optimizations in dHPF, and to do so in the context of a more general computation partitioning model than previous compilers. One potential limitation of the approach is that the underlying class of integer set problems is fundamentally unable to represent HPF data distributions on a symbolic number of processors. We describe how we extend the approach to compile codes for a symbolic number of processors, without requiring any changes to the set formulations for the above optimizations. We show experimentally that the set representation is not a dominant factor in compile times on both small and large codes. Finally, we present preliminary performance measurements to show that the generated code achieves good speedups for a few benchmarks. Overall, we believe we are the first to demonstrate by implementation experience that it is practical to build a compiler for HPF using a general and powerful integer-set framework.

We describe a small set of additions to Scheme to support object-oriented programming, including a form of multiple inheritance. The extensions proposed are in keeping with the spirit of the Scheme language and consequently differ from Lisp-based object systems such as Flavors and the Common Lisp Object System. Our extensions mesh neatly with the underlying Scheme system. We motivate our design with examples, and then describe implementation techniques that yields efficiency comparable to dynamic object-oriented language implementations considered to be high performance. The complete design has an almost-portable implementation, and the core of this design comprises the object system used in T, a dialect of Scheme. The applicative bias of our approach is unusual in object-oriented programming systems. © 1988 acm.
