Wireless ad hoe sensor networks have emerged as one of the key growth areas for wireless networking and computing technologies. So far these networks/systems have been designed with static and custom architectures for specific tasks, thus providing inflexible operation and interaction capabilities. Our vision is to create sensor networks that are open to multiple transient users with dynamic needs. Working towards this vision, we propose a framework to define and support lightweight and mobile control scripts that allow the computation, communication, and sensing resources at the sensor nodes to be efficiently harnessed in an application-specific fashion. The replication/migration of such scripts in several sensor nodes allows the dynamic deployment of distributed algorithms into the network. Our framework, SensorWare, defines, creates, dynamically deploys, and supports such scripts. Our implementation of SensorWare occupies less than 180Kbytes of code memory and thus easily fits into several sensor node platforms. Extensive delay measurements on our iPAQ-based prototype sensor node platform reveal the small overhead of SensorWare to the algorithms (less than 0.3msec in most high-level operations). In return the programmer of the sensor network receives compactness of code, abstraction services for all of the node's modules, and in-built multi-user support. SensorWare with its features apart from making dynamic programming possible it also makes it easy and efficient without restricting the expressiveness of the algorithms.*

An executable computational logic can provide the desired bridge between formal system properties and formal methods to verify them on the one hand, and executable models of system designs based on programming languages on the other. However, not all such logics are equally well suited for the task. This paper gives some requirements that seem important for a computational logic to be suitable in practice, and discusses the experience with rewriting logic, its Maude language implementation, and its formal tool environment, concluding that they seem to meet well those requirements.

System evolution can be achieved effectively from architectural point of view, and one of the most exciting outcomes of those efforts on software architecture is OMG' Model Driven Architecture (MDA) which aims at a unified framework for system evolution targeting middleware-based modern distributed system. The advance of technologies in software design and implementation, however, cannot completely avoid the need for deep understanding of legacy systems for evolution. We are still stuck with incomplete high abstraction views when evolving the legacy systems. This paper presents an approach to bridging legacy systems to MDA, which has three contributions: a suitable architecture description language for architecture recovery, the relevant abstraction rules and the integration of reverse engineering with MDA.

We present the functional language CDuce, discuss some design issues, and show its adequacy for working with XML documents. Distinctive features of CDuce are a powerful pattern matching, first class functions, overloaded functions, a very rich type system (arrows, sequences, pairs, records, intersections, unions, differences), precise type inference for patterns and error localization, and a natural interpretation of types as sets of values. We also outline some important implementation issues; in particular, a dispatch algorithm that demonstrates how static type information can be used to obtain very efficient compilation schemas..

One of the means to enhance software reliability and quality is testing. The testing for object-oriented software is more complex and difficult than that for traditional programming. For object-oriented class-level and cluster-level testing, we proposed a significant methodology TACLLE which has been published in acm Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology Vol.7 No.3 pp.250-295 in 1998 and Vol.10 No.1 pp.56-109 in 2001. This methodology includes an important algorithm named DOE to determine whether two objects are observational equivalent or not. This paper presents the design and implementation for a new prototype of DOE using object-oriented paradigm. The new prototype is based on UML model. It is improved on the technique, and optimized in the system interface.

In this paper, we introduced the design and implementation of a general-purpose assembler that can be written and modified to be adaptive for any given assembly language to generate the target machine code and carry out the execution. The system consists of a parsing module and an execution module. The former generates the target machine code from an inputted assembly language code, and the latter simulates the hardware operation of a computer and executes the instructions. Due to its versatility and flexibility, this assembler allows easy modification to reconfigure itself for implementing any given instruction set architecture. As the major objective of this project, the assembler can help students to learn assembly-language programming and develop an in-depth understanding of its close relationship with the instruction set architecture.

The most shared applications use the client/serve model in which, however a server is usually very complex and heavy since all of group managements are done by the server, and sometimes becomes a communication bottleneck as all of date exchange among group members are mediated via it. To solve the above problems, our shared browser adopted a pure peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture without using any server A group member or a device called a peer dynamically finds other peers via distributed searching, and directly exchange data with other peers. It supports not only sharing a web document in a peer group but also synchronously viewing the document and manipulating the browser with further support of some group users' awareness information like a user moving a cursor entering a new URL and clicking a hyperlink. It is implemented using JXTA protocols and Java programming language. To make the system applicable over the Internet across firewalls and NATs, the HTTP protocol can be used to transfer data via a pipe, a communication mechanism in JXTA.

In this paper, design and implementation of a Java based distributed control system over the Internet, is discussed. The main goal of the project is the development of a tele-laboratory system, which enables one to do experiments on equipments located at remote sites, by using the Internet. The main motivation for this project is the success of the well-known Australian tele-robot system. Following their success, many researchers tried to build web based laboratory systems. Being able to do a laboratory experiment over the Internet is a great convenience, leads to higher collaboration between researchers, and enables students to use the laboratory equipment whenever and wherever they want, as long as a computer with Internet connection is available. Despite these advantages, doing a laboratory experiment over the Internet is not as simple as doing it on site, and involves many new challenges. First of all, during the experiment one should be able to change laboratory equipment parameters, controller parameters, and system inputs remotely. Furthermore, there should be a high-speed data collection system, which can send the collected data to the remote computer for, graphical display. The most important requirement. is the need for a high-speed control loop executed with strict real-time requirements. Finally, a live video connection is necessary so that one can also watch the laboratory equipment and its response as live video. In this paper, we will discuss how we address these challenges, and in which aspects the proposed structure is an improvement of the existing tele-laboratory implementations around the world.

Concurrent programming is notoriously difficult. Current abstractions are intricate and make it hard to design computer systems that are reliable and scalable. We argue that these problems can be addressed by moving to a declarative style of concurrency control in which programmers directly indicate the safety properties that they require. In our scheme the programmer demarks sections of code which execute within lightweight software-based transactions that commit atomically and exactly once. These transactions can update shared data, instantiate objects, invoke library features and so on. They can also block, waiting for arbitrary boolean conditions to become true. Transactions which do not access the same shared memory locations can commit concurrently. Furthermore, in general, no performance penalty is incurred for memory accesses outside *** present a detailed design of this proposal along with an implementation and evaluation. We argue that the resulting system (i) is easier for mainstream programmers to use, (ii) prevents lock-based priority-inversion and deadlock problems and (iii) can offer performance advantages.
